There are two main types of Climbing Rope, Static and Dynamic. Unlike a Static Rope, a Dynamic Climbing Rope will stretch when put under load.

This means that the rope can absorb some of the shock when a climber falls. Less pressure is therefore put on the climber and their equipment/anchors.
