Northern Arizona University Cline Library Archival Internship Announcement Summer 2012

The Cline Library invites applications for: The Elizabeth M. and P.T. Reilly Internship. The preferred candidate will be a graduate student in information science or museum studies working toward a career in a library, museum, or archives setting or an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe engaged in archival or cultural resource management. Graduate students should be currently part of a program with an anticipated completion date of August/September 2012 or later. Undergraduate (junior or senior) applied indigenous studies, geography, history, and anthropology students are also encouraged to apply. Summer 2012: The Cline Library wishes to develop a physical and virtual web-based exhibit to highlight the history of the powwow in Flagstaff, Arizona. The exhibit will explore the evolution of the annual celebration of Native American culture from its inception in 1929 to oversight by the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce to independence as Flagstaff Celebrations and Pow-Wow Incorporated, and ultimately to its operation by a consortium of Native American families. The All-Indian Pow-Wow, as it came to be known, drew thousands of guests to Flagstaffparticipants and spectators alike. The story offers numerous interesting angles to research and share with the public: the cultural exchange, the mix of tribes represented, the business of organizing and promoting a powwow, the events (the parade, dances, contests, crafts, rodeo), the social aspects of the gatherings (camp life), and the economic impact on the town. The NAU Cline Library holds a strong assortment of manuscripts, photographs, oral histories, moving images, and publications which help document the powwow. For examples of past exhibits, see: http://archive.library.nau.edu/resources/exhibits.php Through this experience, the intern will gain practical experience in the following areas: Research o synthesis of primary and published sources Exhibit Planning (team-based) o storyline development and content selection and interpretation o web page design, creation, and digital storytelling Critical Thinking o Understand issues for managing the archival record in the information age

The Reilly intern will be expected to work 40 hours per week for 8 consecutive weeks, during the time period of May 14 through August 10, 2010. The successful candidate can select the 8-week block that best suits his or her schedule. Stipend: $3,000 total, no benefits included. The Reilly intern will be paid in bi-weekly installments to reach the total of $3,000. On-campus housing is subject to availability. The successful candidate must be willing to relocate to Flagstaff, Arizona for eight weeks and underwrite his or her own food, lodging, and transportation to work as the Reilly Intern at NAU. Actual travel expenses to report to work in Flagstaff and return home at the end of the internship will be reimbursed up to $500 (original receipts required). Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required ability to work collaboratively or alone as situations require strong oral and written communication skills familiarity with archival practice basic understanding of web design principles including Universal Design familiarity with video and audio software tools, such as Audition, Dreamweaver, Flash, Camtasia experience with HTML editing and the Adobe Design Premium software suite Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred knowledge of Colorado Plateau or Southwest history Application Deadline: Applications are due on February 10, 2012.
