Ex.

no: Date:

Conducting an Impact test on britle and ductile material by performing

Izod and Charpy tests.
AIM:

To determine the impact strength of the given specimen using Izod and
charpy test.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Impact testing machine.
2. Test specimen
3. Vernier Caliper

PROCEDURE for Izod test :

1. The swinging pendulum weight is raised and locked in position.
2. The trigger is released and the pendulum is allowed to swing. This
actuates the pointer to move in the dial.
3. The frictional energy absorbed by the bearings is noted.
4. Then the pendulum is locked in its position.
5. The specimen is kept vertical in the vice so that the center of notch
is in level with the top of the vice. The notch should face the
direction of blow.
6. The pendulum is allowed to strike the specimen by releasing the
trigger.
7. The energy spent in breaking or pending the specimen is noted.
8. The energy spent in breaking or bending the specimen is noted.
9. The observations are tabulated and the impact strength of the test
specimen is calculated.

PROCEDURE for Charpy test :

1. The swinging pendulum weight is raised and locked in position.
2. The trigger is released and the pendulum is allowed to swing. This
actuates the point to move in the dial.
3. The frictional energy absorbed by the bearings is noted.
4. Then the pendulum is locked in its position.
5. The specimen is placed in between the simple anvil support
keeping the U- notch in the direction opposite to the striking edge
of hammer.

OBSERVATION:

Width : mm
Depth: mm

TABULATION:

CALCULATION:

Impact strength = (Energy absorbed / Cross sectional area) in N/m

RESULT:
Impact strength of the given specimen
For Ductile material = N/m
For Brittle material = N/m
