Types of roads
Nucleated and Convergent
B- Scale
1 cm = 10 km
1:1000000
C- Design a model
D - Efficiency of transportation
Two points Taken:
Speeds In Different Zones
a. CBD- 10 km/hr
b. Manufacturing- 15 km/hr
c. Any road in residential areas- 35 km/hr
d. Arterial road not in CBD (highways, ring roads)- 60 km/hr
NOT PASSING THROUGH CBD
1.0 cm in low income housing = 10km = 10/35 hours
Radius of metro = 11 cm = 110 km
Half-Circumference of metro = πr = π x 110 ≅ 346/60 hours
1.0 cm in industry = 10/35
Total Time ≅ 6.3 hours
Average Speed = Total Distance/Total Time
= 366/6.3
≅ 58 kmph
PASSING THROUGH CBD
3.6cm in low income housing = 36 km = 36/35 hours
3.6 in administrative buildings = 36 km = 36/35 hours
9.6 in cbd = 96 km = 96/10 hours
1.8 high income housing = 18 km = 18/35 hours
1.9 greenery = 19 km = 19/35 hours
3.5 industry = 35 km = 35/15 hours
Total ≅ 15 hours
Average Speed = Total Distance/Total Time
= 240/15
= 16 kmph (exact)
E - Reasons For City Planning
- Why is each zone designated to the location where it
is? [4]
● The main part of this city is the transport route that runs through the middle
of the layout. This route connects all the sectors to one another which makes
transportation for goods and people very easy. This route also connects the
CBD and other zones to other cities as it expands outwards.
● The low income housing is placed on the outer side of the city as the core
would be expensive and not very affordable but is still connected to the CBD
through the transport zone/sector.
● The administrative buildings are placed close to the CBD as the CBD would be
the most crowded place during work hours which makes administrative
buildings easily accessible.
● The services (low and high order) are placed in such a way where the low
income housing, the high income housing and the CBD are all connected to it,
which is its main customer base.
● The high income housing is adjacent to the CBD which is the most important
as they will generally be the ones who run the CBD. They are also connected to
the Green Spaces which attract the high income individuals to buy houses
there.
● The green spaces provide trees next to the manufacturing sector which help to
reduce air pollution, capture carbon dioxide, and improve air quality by
filtering out harmful gases before reaching the core of the city.
● The manufacturing units are placed on the outskirts so not as much pollution
will be caused in the city.
● The CBD, like almost all models is located in the centre so it is easily
accessible to all the zones.
- Justify the choice of street grid/transport layout in
your city. [2]
● The layout encourages the locals in the concentric to interact with each
other and convergent streets can host events.
● The layout also has highways in the most busy places to avoid traffic
● The land can be used for many purposes. In the convergent areas there
can be commercial education, etc. zones and the concentric area could
be used for the locals living there.
● Additionally, the circular shape of our model was taken, as a circle has
the least perimeter possible for a certain area.
- Give two reasons for the location of green space. [2]
● The green spaces are placed near the manufacturing and industries because
they mitigate the impact of the air pollution caused by them.
● Green spaces symbolise peace and calm which attracts customers and increase
demand for housing. This is why there is high income housing placed near the
green space.
- Explain how your city deals with urban issues such
as pollution and slums. [2]
● The city deals with issues like pollution by placing the industries away from
the centre and by placing large open green areas next to it that improve the air
quality by filtering harmful air.
● The high and low income housing takes up nearly 20% of the city which
means there is a lot of room for future development and to accommodate
more population. This can reduce the issues of slums.
- Is your city inspired from any existing city models?
[1]
● Yes, the Hyot’s sector model
- What element have you incorporated from the
inspired city? Why? [2]
● Hyot’s Sector Model focuses mainly on transportation. We felt that
transportation and accessibility are the most important while planning a city.
We took the idea of one long transport route that connects the CBD to the
parts of the city and out of the city
- Which real-world city does it resemble the most? [1]
● This city’s main feature is the transport route running through the centre. It is
just like the A40 road in London. The road continues and ends at the city of
Wales.
F - Evaluation
EVALUATION:
The medium we used for this project was GeoGebra.
- At first it took all of us a while to understand and learn how to use the
software since we were not familiar with the website so it took us quite a while
to figure it out.
- Furthermore, some of the commands were difficult to understand and
glitched a bit. It was quite a task to make the city model with no prior
knowledge of programming.
However, the website comes with quite a few advantages such as:
- There were a large number of tools that aided us in the making of the model
and after understanding the software it was easy to manage.
- Additionally, It helped us visualise different maths concepts and equations
which made it easier to comprehend different topics and helped to further out
understanding of basic maths concepts.
