-1.The product of two the students)
consecutive integers is 240.
Find the value of each integer.
Define the integer.
Let n=the first integer

-Let n^2+1=the second integer

(first integer)x (second
integer)=240
(n)*(n+1)=240
n^2 +n=240
n^2+n-240=0
(n+16)(n-15)=0
n+16=0 or n-15=0
n=-16 or n=15
if n=-16
then n+1 or -16+1=-15
hence, the two integers are -16
and -15
if n=15
then n+1 or 15+1=16
hence, the two integers are 16
and 15

-2. The length of a rectangle is

6feet less than the width. If the
area is 70ft^2. Find its
dimensions.
Define variables:
Let :
 w be the width of the
rectangle in feet.
 l be the length of the
rectangle in feet.
According to the problem:
The length is 6 feet less than 4
times the width.
L=4w-6
The area of the rectangle is
70square feet.
Area= L*W
L*W=70
Substitute the expression for l
for the first equation into the
second equation:
(4w-6)(w)=70
Expand and simplify:
4w^2-6w=70
Rearrange into a standard
quadratic equation:
4w^2-6w-70=0
Factoring the equation:
(4w+14)(w-5)=0
Set each factor equal to zero
Solve for w:
4w+14=0
4w=-14
w=-14/4
w=-7/2

w-5=0
w=5
since the width of the rectangle
cannot be negative, we discard
w=-7/2
so, the width w is 5 feet.
Find the length:
Substitute w=5 into the
expression for the length
L=4w-6
L=4(5)-6
L=20-6
L=14
The dimensions of the
rectangle are:
Width:5 feet
Length: 14 feet

-3. The difference of three

times a number and two is the
same as -9 times the square of
the number. Find the number.
-Solution:
Let x= the number
3x-2=-9x^2 given equation
3x-2=-9x^2
9x^2+3x-2=0
(3x+2)(3x-1)=0
3x=2=0 or 3x-1=0
x=-2/3 or x=1/3
checking:
if x=-2/3
3x-2=-9x^2
3(-2/3)-2=-9(-2/3)^2
-2-2=-4
-4=-4

If x =1/3
3x-2=-9x^2
3(1/3)-2=-9(1/3)^2
1-2=-1
-1=-1

The possible values of x are -

2/3 and 1/3.
IV. Evaluation:
Quiz: Show your solution.

1. The sum of the ages of father and son is 53. If the father is 3 less than the square
of the son’s age. How old are they?
2. Twice the square of the sum of a number and 3 is 98. Find the number.
3. The square of a number equals nine times that number. Find the number.

V. Assessment/Assignment:

1. Suppose that four times the square of a number equals 20 times that number.
What is the number?
2. The area of a square garden is five times of its perimeter. Find the side length of
the garden.
3. The volume of a rectangular box is given by the expression 27x^3+125y^3 cubic
inches. What is the area of the box?
