III. TEACHING STRATEGIES/METHODS

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
1. Daily Routine
a) Greetings
Good Morning, everyone! Good Morning, Miss.
How’s your morning going? Good/Fine, Miss.

b) Prayer
Miss _______, please lead the
prayer before we check the
attendance. Heavenly Father and Your Beloved Son
Jesus Christ,
Thank you for another life to enjoy,
another day to learn, and a new set of
things we will experience. As we go
through our lessons today, may let us be
instruments to do good things. Help us
be obedient, honest, and kind to one
another. Please bless our teachers, our
schools, and the students. In Jesus’
name. Amen.
c) Checking of Attendance
Before we start our class, class
monitor, please list down the
absentees today and give it to
me at the end of the class. Yes, ma’am.

Thank you.

2. Review
Who can recall what was our
discussion all about last
meeting? Possible Answer:
Last meeting we discussed about the
products of polynomials. Steps on how
we multiply two binomials.

3. Motivation
Before we formally start our
discussion of our lesson for today,
let’s have a little activity. As you
can see, I have here a set of
puzzles. I know you are all familiar
with factors right? In this activity,
you will complete the puzzle with
its factors. For example, the given
number is 8, the possible factors
are 1, 2, 4, and 8. Since 2 and 4 is
the only given factors on the
choices then we put 2 and 4 to
complete the puzzle.

Now, any volunteers? Mr. ____ for

#2, Miss ____ for #3, Miss ______ for
#4, and Miss____ #5.
Possible Answers:

Very well. Based on our activity,

who have the idea of our possible
lesson for today? Possible Answer:
Factoring

Very good! Our topic for today is

Factoring Polynomials.

4. Presentation of Objectives
Miss ____ please read what are you
are expected to perform today. 1. OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, 75% of the

learners should be able to;

a) Factor it using Algebra Tiles; and

b) Factor using reverse FOIL method.

c) Solve using Algebra Tiles and /or

reverse FOIL method.

Thank you so much.

5. Lesson Proper
Before we jump to discussion of
factoring polynomials, lets us first
discuss the key concepts of our
todays lesson. Please read what’s
on the presentation, Miss _____. A polynomial is an expression in which a
combination of a constant and a
variable is separated by an addition or
a subtraction sign.

Thank you. Here are some types or

categories of polynomials.

Monomial – consist of one term

Example: 5x, 2s, 7t
Binomial – consist of two terms
Example: 5x+2, 6t+9, 4k+8
Trinomial – consist of three terms
Example: 7x²+6x+2, t²+5t+9

These three were the most

common and most used
polynomials we know.

Please read Ms. _____. Factoring is the process by which one

tries to make a mathematical
expression look like a multiplication
problem by looking for factors. Basically,
factoring reverses the multiplication
process.

Thank you so much. You already

know what’s factoring is, based on
your performance in the activity
earlier.

In todays topic, you will use

Algebra Tiles on how to factor
polynomials. Anyone on the class
who have the idea what Algebra
Tiles is?
I’ll give you a little background
what is Algebra Tiles is. Please Algebra Tiles are known as
read. mathematical manipulatives that allow
students to better understand ways of
algebraic thinking and the concepts of
algebra.

Thank you. For today, yellow tiles

will represent positive and red tiles
will represent negatives.

I’ll paste it in the board so that you

won’t forget. This big square tiles
are x², this rectangular tiles are x,
and this smaller square tiles are
constants or ones.

x² -x²

x -x

1 -1

Here are the steps on how to

factor using Algebra tiles. But for
your better understanding, let me
perform every step while you read.
This will be our example number 1.
Please read step 1 please.

Example 1.
Factor x²+x-2 using Algebra Tiles.
Step 1. Represent the expression using
Step1: For the step 1, we will use 1
their corresponding tiles.
big yellow square tile to represent
x², 1 yellow rectangular tiles to
represent x, and 2 red small square
tiles to represent 2.

Continue reading Step 2 and 3. Step 2. Arrange the tiles into a

Start with the big square tile and rectangle.
then the rectangular tile to pair Step 3. The factors are the lengths of the
with the length of the side of the sides of the rectangle.
bug square tile and then the
smaller tile to align with length the
side of the rectangular tile. Just like
this. Then start putting its
corresponding value. The 2inch
length is equal to x, and 1 inch
length is equal to 1.
x +1 +1 = x+2

-1

= x-1

Step 4.
Step 4. Check. Multiply the two factors
(x+2)(x-1) =( x•x )– (x•1)+(2•x) -2
to check.
= x²-x+2x-2
= x²+x-2

Now, who wants to answer

example number 2?

Example 2.
Factor 2a²+5a+2.
Possible Answer
Step 1.
Step 2 and 3.
X x 1 =2x+1

1
=x+2

Step 4.
(2x+1)(x+2)= (2x•x)+(2x•2)+(1•x)+(1•2)
= 2x²+4x+x+2
= 2x²+5x+2
Very Good! You’re a fast
learner.

Now, lets have another method

of factoring. In this method, we
are going to reverse the FOIL
method. Someone will read the
steps, and I’ll perform every
step so that you can
understand easily.

This will be our example number

1 using reverse FOIL method.
Example 1:
Factor x²-5x-14 using FOIL
method.

Now please read the steps. Step 1. Set up a product of two ( )

where each will hold two terms.
Thank you. The step 1 will look
like this.

( ) ( )

Please continue on the step 2. Step 2. Find the factors that go in the
first positions.
To get the x² which is the F in
FOIL, we would have to have
an x in the first positions in each
( ). So it would look like this:

(x )(x ).

The third step, please. Step 3. Find the factors that go in the
last positions.
We need two numbers whose
product is -14 and sum is -5.
That would have to be -7 and 2.
Putting that into our factors we
get:

(x-7) (x+2)

And the last step, please. Step 4. Checking.

Of course, the last step would

be checking. We’ll multiply the
factors we got to check if we
will get the original polynomial.

(x-7)(x+2) = (x•x) +( x•2) –

(7•x) – (7•2)
= x²+2x-7x-14
= x²-5x-14
Did we get the original Example 2. a²+6a+9
polynomial? Alright! Example Step 1. ( ) ( )
number 2, who will volunteer to Step 2. (a ) (a )
solve? Step 3.
3×3 = 9
3+3 = 6
(a+3) (a+3)
Step 4.
(a+3)(a+3)
= (a•a)+(a•3)+(3•a)+(3•3)
= a²+3a+3a+9
= a²+6a+9

Excellent!

6. Generalization
Seems like almost everyone
understands our lesson for
today. Anyone from the class
who can summarize the steps of
factoring using Algebra tiles. Possible Answer :
Step 1. Represent the expression using
their corresponding tiles.
Step 2. Arrange the tiles into a
rectangle.
Step 3. The factors are the lengths of the
sides of the rectangle.
Step 4. Check. Multiply the two factors
to check.
How about the steps using the
reverse FOIL method? Possible Answer:
Step 1. Set up a product of two ( )
where each will hold two terms.
Step 2. Find the factors that go in the
first positions.
Step 3. Find the factors that go in the
last positions.
Step 4. Checking.
7. Application
Very well! How about we do a
little activity? In this activity,
you’ll be needing a pair so
please find yourself a pair.

Is everyone now settled? I’ll

give the instructions.

Instructions: Every pair will pick a

polynomial from the bowl. The
one will factor using Algebra
Tiles and one will perform using
the reverse FOIL method. You’ll
do this activity for 3 minutes.
And of course you’ll explain
your answers. Any questions?
Clarifications? None? Now, pick
your polynomials and start.

Polynomials in the bowl. Possible Answer:

1. x²-5x+6 1. (x+6)(x-1)
2. x²+6x+8 2. (x+4)(x+2)
3. t²-4t-12 3. (t-6)(t+2)
4. b²+7b+10 4. (b+5)(b+2)
5. x²-9x+14 5. (x-7)(x-2)

Times up! Please sit down and

pair number 1 please explain
your answer.

Very good! Pair number 2, the

stage is yours.

Excellent! Now, I assume that

everyone have already grasp
our lesson for today. And I’m
also assuming that you are all
ready for our short quiz? Get ½
sheet of paper. This is just a 5-
item quiz. And the one that will
get a perfect score will be
exempted and will
automatically score perfect to
the assignment that will be
given later.
