LABORATORY FACILITIES SAFETY INSPECTION

A. SAFETY Lab 1 Lab 2 Storage
1. Areas around fire extinguishers, pull alarms, and emergency
eyewashes/showers clear and accessible.
2. Cabinets, furniture, and equipment taller than 4 feet braced or
anchored.
3. Floors dry and free of slip hazards.
4. No exposed wiring or damaged electrical cords.
5. Fire buckets are readily available.
6. Chemical spill kits available.
7. Fume hood ventilation ports functioning.
8. Eyewash stations tested (flushed for 1 minute) and are kept clear.
9. First-aid supplies are readily available
10.Protective gloves are available and matched to hazards involved.
11. Eye protection is available and in use.
12. Protective clothing is available and in use.
13. Proper closed toe shoes are being worn.
B. HOUSE KEEPING Lab 1 Lab 2 Storage
1. Lab is orderly and free of clutter - no rubbish on floors or benchtops,
in drawers, in cabinets or under shelves/tables.
2. Exits and walkways are free from obstruction.
3. Hoods are NOT being used for storage.
4. Used sharps are stored in proper containers.
5. Broken glass disposed of in proper containers.
6. Electrical connections are safe (e.g., no overloaded outlets, damaged
cables, etc.).
7. Tops of cabinets and shelves are free from stored items.
8. Heavy objects are confined to lower shelves.
9. No food, beverages or smoking in lab or stored in lab areas.
10. Lab doors are kept closed.
C. STORAGE Lab 1 Lab 2 Storage
1. Storage containers are segregated according to hazard class.
2. Corrosives and flammables are stored below eye level.
3. No outdated materials present.
4. All containers are properly labeled.
5. Equipment inventories are available and updated.
6. Chemical inventories available and updated.
7. Flammables/ Combustibles are stored away from ignition sources.
8. Bulk quantities of flammable liquids are stored in approved storage
cabinets.
9. Storage cabinets are always kept closed.
10. Nothing is stored on top of flammable cabinets.
11. Hazardous chemicals are stored with secondary container.
12. Containers are clean and free from spilled materials, structurally
sound, and closed when not in use.
D. WASTE HANDLING Lab 1 Lab 2 Storage
1. Wastes are properly segregated according to hazard class.
2. Wastes are properly tracked and labeled with complete waste tag.
3. All wastes are stored for less than 9 months.
4. Wastes are placed in designated containers not more than three
quarters full.
D. RECORD KEEPING/ POSTINGS Lab 1 Lab 2 Storage
1. Findings identified on previous self-inspection have been corrected and
corrections have been documented.
2. Lab department personnel have completed lab safety training.
3. Equipment logbooks are available and up to date.
4. MSDS sheets and equipment manuals/ training materials available.
5. Unattended (“Experiment in Progress”) posted appropriately.
6. Emergency contacts are readily available.
7. Warning signs in use where necessary.
8. Laboratory SOPs are strictly implemented.
