At UMI(Urban Mobility of India) 2011 Research Symposium 3 December 2011

BRTS - Bus Rapid Transit System

Exclusive ROW ensures better speed and lesser time delays Safe, comfortable, convenient and economical travel alternative Environmentally rewarding mode

The importance of the existence of the IPT mode in the feeder service to BRTS . Comparison of Current IPT mode to the Proposed IPT mode. Stated Preference Survey was carried out and 1127 samples were collected to adjudge the need and impact of IPT on Feeder routes. Socio Economic Modal Shift . Two key variables COST and FREQUENCY of the IPT mode and its impact on BRT Ridership analyzed .

Study Area Profile Surat City

City Population 4.6 million Major Industries Are Textile, Diamond Pharmaceuticals etc. The city shows a 6 % annual growth ( Surat CDP) Highest GDP in India in 2008 i.e. 11.5 ( Surat CDP)

Data collection and analysis

Due to socio economy diversity in the stretch considered the data has been divided into three economic group based on income, viz. LIG, MIG and HIG. The LIG forms a major chunk of the population. The MIG is also in abundance.

Two Key Parameters taken as variable: Travel Cost of the IPT mode Travel Frequency of the IPT mode

Development of discrete choice model

Travel cost has negative coefficient which suggest that the utility of an alternative decreases as the value of this term increases. While the travel frequency shows a positive coefficient which suggest that as the value of the term is increasing the utility of the alternative shall also increase. Also, the coefficient of income is negative, which is an indication that as income level increases, the utility of the BRT Bus decreases.

Results and discussions

The Low Income Group (LIG) may shift (40-55) % w.r.t cost. Middle Income Group (MIG) may shift to BRTS up to (50-65) %, if the frequency is as per the compulsory trip requirements. However, HIG only leisure trip may be shifted to BRTS (37-57%).

Commuter Share Scenario

A person belonging to the working class shall not mind walking up to 5 minutes. A person who is service class shall not mind walking for 15 minutes. A laborer may walk up to 500m but not more than that in order to catch the nearest mode of transport.

Proposed IPT MODE

TATA MAGIC
A modern day form of the Tempo/Vikram Aesthetic, clean, comfortable, convenient, fuel efficient, safer, economical, adequate seating capacity, Lesser emissions. People from HIG segment showed an interest to use the proposed IPT mode and may shift up to 30% if frequent service of IPT is ensured. Similarly people who used to cycle down 3 4 Kms or Two wheeler users may also shift to the new Proposed IPT by 72% and 58% respectively if economic fares are ensured in the proposed IPT. Also, the people who walk up to 500m to catch the auto shall now be able to access IPT close to their generation point and may want to shift up to 81% to get to their place of interest by availing the BRT facility. The positive response from people will improve the catchment area of a BRT stop from the current 500m to about 2-3 Kms which would positively impact the ridership magnitude.

Conclusions
The impact of the cost and frequency of the feeder service on the ridership of the Proposed BRTS in Surat City. The Input Variables were the cost of the feeder service and the frequency of the feeder service. All parameters related to the BRT operation were considered as constant. The Output showed that if proper integration of the BRTS is done with feeder services then a good ridership can be achieved on the BRTS by almost 41-57%. Mode choice help us to know the propensity of the commuters to change their travel behavior in relation to the choice of a particular mode for their trips. Proposed mode for feeder services, Tata Magic also received good response in terms of willingness of commuters to travel in it.
