Y e a r Pain of missing cyclists family THE distraught family of missing Co Antrim cyclist Samuel Campbell have told how we just want him home. The 49-year-old went out for a bike ride from his home in the Kells area on New Years Day. He didnt come home. Police have said they are very concerned about the father-of- three, but are hopeful he is still alive. Laverne Campbell, 47, said there was nothing which could explain her husbands disappearance. Mrs Campbell last saw him on the Tully Road in Kells, close to Ballymena, at around 2.15pm on Sunday. Mr Campbell, who is 6ft, slim with short, dark hair, was wearing a red top with the letters TCG and black tracksuit bottoms. He was riding a white road bike. Detective Inspector Bob Blemmings said police were extremely concerned about Mr Campbell and, despite high winds, the PSNI helicopter had been deployed. He said that extensive searches of the Ballymena area are also being carried out by police offcers, sniffer dogs, partner agencies and the local community. David Campbell, the missing mans elder brother, said: We just dont know what the situation is. We can only tell you that we wish he was back again. We work together he is an electrical contractor and Im a building contractor. We are the youngest of fve boys and are very close. This years events take on added signifcance as they will be used by the UFU hierarchy to facilitate a province-wide debate on the CAP review proposals, which were published last October. It is absolutely crucial that we give our entire membership the opportunity to express their view and opinions on these quite radical proposals, a union spokesman confrmed to Farming Life. The UFU will be submitting its response to DARD in February. The offcial EU timetable is that the co-decision process, seeking agreement between the EU Parliament and the EU Council on the Commissions proposals will take 18 months, aiming for agreement in mid 2013, with the new CAP in place for January 2014. However we wont be surprised if the process is disrupted by factors such as the impact of national elections, EU budget discussions and simply the fact that this is the frst time the co-decision making process has been implemented. UFU chief executive Clarke Black has confrmed that the CAP reform proposals, if implemented in their current form, could seriously challenge production agriculture in Northern Ireland. We always knew that a change to an area based payment system would take away support from our most productive farms, he added. Whats now apparent, however, is the seismic shift in the alignment of EU support that will take effect, if the current proposals are given the green light. European Commission staff continue to make it clear that they want to see the end of a support mechanism refecting the status quo that existed within agriculture a decade or so ago. However, it is now evident that what Brussels is proposing for Northern Ireland could severely damage our primary production base. And, of course this could have major implications, all negative, for our food processing sector. Mr Black added: What we need is a balanced settlement that recognises the needs of every farm business in Northern Ireland.
