Introduction and Welcome to ACTT


Whether you are new to ACTT or a regular student we welcome you to our College and your course. As Australias leading private college for the performing arts we continually seek to provide students with the best tutoring and courses in a supportive and enjoyable environment. You are joining a creative community that includes students studying full-time and part-time in both accredited courses or specialist workshops or courses. As you commence or continue your study it is important to remember that neither the creation of performance, nor the study of it, is a casual activity. You will find the course work you do not only a most enjoyable and rewarding experience but also time consuming, mentally and physically demanding, thought provoking and even at times frustrating. You are joining students who are enthusiastic and committed to developing their craft and a teaching, management and administration team who are highly dedicated professionals committed to the pursuit of excellence. As a student you have a responsibility for your own progress in the course, and also towards the other members of your class group, because without your commitment to each other, the course outcomes cannot be achieved. Each class you undertake is essential to your own and your group's progress; not all will be fun, not all will be exciting; most will challenge you and some will be difficult. They will, however, provide you with the skill, insight, stimulation, experience and motivation to set the foundation upon which you can pursue your ambitions. This Handbook reinforces the importance of thorough preparation and participation in the course, professional attitudes and the attendance requirements and implications of absences and lateness. Please take time to read this Handbook in full. It is written for the benefit of all students, full time and part time, from four week to three year courses. You will also find important practical information that will guide you to make the best possible use of your time here as a student. The Handbook also explains how to discuss your progress or any difficulties you have with any aspect of the course. Remember, we are here to assist you in your journey through your course. If you have a query about general issues relating to your course, the College, financial or personal matters that you wish to discuss with the Principal or senior staff members, it is possible to make an appointment to meet with them outside of scheduled class times. At the start of your course you will be provided with course information, timetable and details from your Course Manager and Tutors. ACTT Code of Practice Summary


ACTT is committed to high standards in the provision of vocational education and training and other client services. The following Code of Practice describes the minimum standards of our vocational education and training and other client services. ACTT guarantees to meet our Code of Practice for Education and Training Services and has systems in place to plan for and provide quality training and assessment. ACTT is also a member of the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) and complies with their code of ethics, thereby assuring students fair and equitable treatment at all times. Business Plan The organisation maintains a plan to achieve its mission, goals, financial and operational functions and processes. Financial Standards All fees paid by students are safeguarded and the refund policy is fair and equitable. Compliance with Government Regulation The organisation complies with all relevant local, state and federal government regulations. Legislative Requirements All relevant personnel are aware of and implement all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. Access and Equity The organisation has policies and procedures for access and equity, and staff and tutors are trained to apply them. Ethics The organisation undertakes to act all times in an ethical manner honestly, fairly and accurately. National Principles and Standards The organisation adheres to the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) principles and standards. Insurances The college maintains current and adequate insurance as required by law. Physical Resources The organisation utilises suitable premises and equipment, maintained in good order and upgraded as necessary. Liaison with Industry The ACTT liaises with industry through a range of consultative groups, industry associations, unions and employers. Human Resources Staff meet the necessary requirements in the national principles and standards, industry standards and program curricula. Internal Monitoring and Review All functions, processes and procedures are reviewed regularly for effectiveness and efficiency. Marketing and Advertising Courses are marketed and administered with integrity, accuracy and professionalism. Student Recruitment and Placement Student recruitment is conducted at all times in an ethical, non-discriminatory and responsible manner. Recognition of Prior Learning Recognition of Prior Learning can be given to students who provide sufficient relevant evidence of competence. Student Information Accurate and up-to-date information to students is provided prior to commencement within the student handbook. Student Support Services

Students are provided with support that facilitates to achievement of their desired outcomes. Assessment Assessment incorporates the principles and standards of the Australian Quality Training Framework. Grievances and Appeals ACTT has a fair and equitable process for dealing with any student grievance and appeal. Location ACTTs main campus is located at 505 Pitt St, Sydney, close to all major transport links into Sydney. The campus facilities include a large rehearsal room that converts into a performance space for student performances. There are 5 studios, a library, a student room and various offices and storerooms. The courtyard on the lower level also provides a breakout space between classes. As of July 2011, ACTT joined Sydney Fringe, Century Venues, New Musicals Australia and Addison Road Centre at Sidetrack Theatre. Sidetrack Theatre is the base for the technical courses and the venue for third year actors stage works. ACTT has become Sidetrack Theatres most significant operating partner alongside The Sydney Fringe. The move further consolidates the strong links between these organisations, and facilitates even stronger connections between ACTT and the independent and commercial theatre sectors in Sydney.

Courses Available
Full-time Courses
ACTT currently offers four full-time courses in its actor-training program: the two-year 91381NSW Diploma in Performance Practice, the one-year 91380NSW Advanced Diploma of Arts in Stage and Screen Acting and a five month 91361NSW Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance. 91362NSW Certificate IV in Music Theatre is a one year full time course. All courses are fully-accredited by NSW Vocational Education Accreditation Board (VETAB now the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), the entry levels are set so that students can be admitted to the most appropriate course, depending on the level of their skills, knowledge and commitment. ACTT also offers the Advanced Diploma of Stage Management CUE60303 for students who have some experience behind the scenes in theatre and wish to work at the level of Stage Manager. Also the CUE30203 Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical Operations) is offered as a foundation course in technical operations for the theatre. ACTT also offers the Certificate IV in Live Production, Theatre and Events (CUE40303) for those students who may already have completed the Certificate III as part of their HSC.

The 69798 Certificate IV in Performing Arts (Dance) is offered in partnership with Mango Dance Company, Neutral Bay, Sydney and DanceForce in Tweed Heads, northern NSW. The 91362NSW Certificate IV in Music Theatre is also offered at Gold Coast Triple Threat (an arm of Merrimac State High School) on the Gold Coast, Qld.

Part-time Courses
ACTT currently offers the Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance- THE CORE over one-year part-time

In February, April, July and October, ACTT offers a range of short introductory, intermediate and advanced courses, as single modules, in stage acting and acting for camera, leading to Statements of Attainment. Short workshop courses are also offered in singing, voice, audition preparation, comedy, accents and Playlab.

General
ACTT maintains an industry-based Course Advisory Committee to ensure that the curriculum achieves the appropriate learning outcomes and the qualifications prepare graduates for employment in the performing arts industry. High-profile representatives from a wide cross-section of the arts meet regularly with the Colleges Board of Studies to monitor, review and enhance the curricula. ACTT is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), through VETAB, now ASQA. As a result, the standards required to achieve this status, and maintain it, are well established in all the procedures and activities of the College. These high standards are applied both in all the accredited courses and other courses the College offers.

Fees and Charges


Course fees and service charges are listed separately for each course offered. All costs are disclosed prior to a students course commencement and various options are available for payment.

Payment for Tuition


Up Front: An Earlybird discount is offered for qualification courses when full payment is made within an approved period of time prior to the course commencement. Students enrolling in short course must pay for the course in full prior to starting the course. Instalments: If the full course fee cannot be paid prior to the start date of a course, the following steps are required: An initial payment / deposit is made to accept the offer of a student place. An agreement is then made between the student and the College whereby the remaining amount is paid in monthly instalments through EZYPAY (see course details for the specific details). Instalments are debited automatically from a nominated account. NB: Students cannot commence a course until either full payment has been made or an Ezypay payment schedule has been approved by ACTT and committed to in writing by the student. Student cards will be withheld until payment plans have been received in writing. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure there are sufficient funds in their account for the monthly instalments. Failed transactions incur bank and Ezypay charges and may jeopardise enrolment. ACTT reserves the right to refuse entry to classes until such time as the students fees are back up to date. Students making payments through Ezypay are also responsible for updating any changes to the bank account that is being debited by Ezypay. Payment Defaults: For any extended late payments ACTT reserves the right to use any debt collections means considered necessary to collect the outstanding fees.

Please note that until course fees are paid in full: Testamurs and/or assessment results will not be issued under any circumstances (feedback and results may be viewed under supervision only); Students are ineligible to become a member of the graduate collective and associated privileges; Students are ineligible to receive Letter/s of Recommendation from the College and its tutors. Administration Charge: Full- Time Students Upon enrolment, each full time student is required to pay a deposit to secure their place which includes a nonrefundable administration fee to cover administration, registration, library, text-books, lockers and use of equipment. A security deposit is sometimes required for items including Locker Keys which is refunded on course completion and return of goods in satisfactory condition.

Financial Assistance: Full-Time Students


ACTTs full-time courses are approved for Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy. Students must make their own inquiries with Centrelink to determine eligibility and the rate of allowance payable.

Withdrawal/Refund Policy
ACTT has a refund policy for withdrawal or deferment which provides an equitable balance between the commitment the college makes when accepting applications and the obligations of the student when committing to a course.

Full-Time Courses
If a student enrolled in1. Diploma of Performance Practice, 2. Advanced Diploma of Arts in Stage & Screen Acting, 3. Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance full time mode, 4. Certificate IV in Music Theatre, 5. Certificate IV in Performing Arts (Dance), 6. Certificate IV in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical Operations), 7. Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre & Events (Technical Operations), 8. Advanced Diploma of Venues and Events 9. Advanced Diploma of Stage Management Withdraws at least 4 weeks before the scheduled starting date: the College will retain the administration charge up to a maximum of $500 of the deposit and refund the balance of payments made by the student. Withdraws less than 4 weeks and more than seven days before the scheduled starting date: The College will retain the full deposit amount and any service fee included in the fees, and refund any balance. Withdraws seven days or less before the scheduled starting date: The College will retain the full deposit amount, any service fee included in the fees, plus the equivalent of one months fees and refund any balance.

Withdraws after commencing a course: A student must give written notice of their intention to withdraw. The College will retain the fees attributed to the whole of the remaining semester (two terms), or in the case of full time courses less than a year in duration (Certificate III in Theatre Performance & Practices) the College will retain the fees attributed to the whole of the remaining term in which the student withdraws, or the equivalent of nine weeks tuition (whichever is the greater) and any Service Fee. The College will refund any balance paid above that or the student will be required to pay the outstanding value of fees up to this amount. . Is asked to leave a course: The same conditions apply as for a withdrawal. This situation may occur, for example, where it has become apparent to teaching staff, the Head of ACTT, and Board of Studies that the student has not taken on the responsibilities of the course. This rarely occurs and would usually only follow extensive counselling and remedial services. Is to receive the security deposit: The student must return all texts, library items, keys and other College property recorded in the students name, and has met all other financial obligations. Wishes to defer their studies: For full time students who have completed a whole year, the College will consider applications to defer their studies for one year maximum. Applications will not be considered to defer only the second semester of a year. Normal fees are payable for the year in which the student is currently enrolled. The student will need to follow normal re-enrolment procedures after the deferment. For fulltime courses of less than a years duration there is no deferment option. If a student is not able to continue in the course then the withdrawal policy would apply. Is an overseas student: The validity of a students visa will be affected by withdrawal and/or deferment, and are closely controlled by the ESOS Act. Overseas students will not be refunded any fees in these circumstances. Please refer any specific enquiries to the Administrations Office.

Part-Time Courses
1. Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance part-time mode. Withdraws at least 4 weeks before the scheduled starting date: the College will retain the administration charge up to a maximum of $500 of the deposit and refund the balance of payments made by the student. Withdraws less than 4 weeks and more than seven days before the scheduled starting date: The College will retain the full deposit amount and any service fee included in the fees, and refund any balance. Withdraws seven days or less before the scheduled starting date: The College will retain the full deposit amount any service fee included in the fees, plus the equivalent of one months fees and refund any balance. Withdraws after commencing a course: A student must give written notice of their intention to withdraw. ACTIVATE program Withdraws at least 2 weeks before the scheduled starting date: the College will only retain up to a maximum of $150 of the deposit and refund the balance of payments made by the student. Withdraws less than 2 weeks before the scheduled starting date: The College will retain the full deposit amount and will refund any balance.

The College will refund any balance. Is asked to leave a course: The same conditions apply as for a withdrawal. This situation may occur, for example, where it has become apparent to teaching staff, the Director, and Board of Studies that the student has not taken on the responsibilities of the course. This rarely occurs and would usually only follow extensive counselling and remedial services. Wishes to defer their studies: Once the course commences there is a policy of no deferment.

ACCESS short course program


In the case of short courses a full refund of the deposit and any other payments will be made less a $25 administration charge for a withdrawal more than 7 days prior to the scheduled start date. In the case of short courses $100 will be retained if a withdrawal is made 7 days or less before the start date and any other funds will be. Once a course commences there are no refunds. There are no refunds for missed classes, or withdrawal from a course once it has commenced. Full payment is required prior to commencement Requests for transfer or refunds after course commencement will be declined. ACTT is not responsible for changes in personal circumstances. If the College withdraws or cancels a course for which a student has already made a payment, there is no financial penalty, the College will refund all payments made.

Admission Procedures
Entry Requirements
Entry requirements operate to ensure that discriminatory practices are avoided. Individual course information sheets provide detailed requirements including course pre-requisites for applicants.

Language Literacy and Numeracy


Provision is made for initial assessment as required at the interview and/or audition prior to enrolment. As all courses require a minimum level of ability to speak and read the English language, a minimum level of English, especially for people for whom English is a second language has been set at IELTS 6 or equivalent. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System and there are testing centres across Australia and in most countries around the world. To locate a centre, go to www.ielts.org. A bridging course may be advisable for students whose level of English is insufficient for the course. Bridging courses are offered by a number of registered English Language Schools and TAFE. A practical assessment of a students language and literacy is made during ACTTs audition and interview process in the first instance to gauge the individuals capacity with the spoken language and ability to read from a script. Numeracy assessment is undertaken where it is critical to the nature of the course and in particular relates to some units within the qualifications drawn from the Entertainment Training Package.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy support is given to students as required by individual tutors and Course supervisors. In particular, where a learning difficulty is believed to exist for a student and requires remedial work beyond the expertise of the tutor, referral is available to a number of external specialist centres. For details of what referrals are available contact the Course Manager or Head of ACTT.

Induction Procedures
An induction and orientation process takes place at the commencement of each course. Students are familiarised with the layout of the College and its environs and tutors and staff talk through the content of the courses as well as the day to day administrative procedures, including sign-on and leave application. The range of student amenities and support services are described and particular emphasis is given to students rights and responsibilities in the area of Health and Safety. It is at this time that subject tutors will issue reading and equipment lists relevant to their modules.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)


Students may, at the time of lodging their enrolment in a course, and in consultation with the Director and the Course Manager, request Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for any module or modules which they believe they can demonstrate the required competencies. The request will be evaluated by the appropriate teaching staff. Should the request be appropriate students will be asked to complete an RPL application form, which compiles the evidence and verification. This process may involve a fee and the student will be advised of the cost at the evaluation stage. Students should bear in mind that most ACTT courses have a strong emphasis on group learning, however, RPL for individual modules in a training program may be possible. In this instance the student may be encouraged to continue to participate in the full program.

Mutual Recognition
As an RTO, ACTT will recognise qualifications a student may have already gained from another RTO, where that qualification matches or includes units that match any included in the course the student is entered in. This recognition is mutual between RTOs.

Acceptable Behaviour
ACTT recognises the value of a diverse student population and is committed to meeting the needs of people from all backgrounds and at all stages of their lives. ACTT is committed to promoting equal opportunities in employment and education and to ensure freedom from all forms of discrimination as determined by legislation and College policy. By enrolling at ACTT, students also accept the responsibility to comply with relevant State and Federal legislation concerning Racial, Disability and Sex Discrimination, and avoiding other unethical behaviours including sexual harassment, bullying and other inappropriate behaviour. Further information with regards to ACTTs full policy and the relevant legislation are available at the Admin Office and in the Library. Entry to courses is based solely on education/training considerations. ACTT has a policy which allows access to courses/programs regardless of age, gender, national background or physical disability, provided other entry requirements including an audition or interview are met.

The College has determined the minimum requirements for entry into all its courses. These are based on educational requirements and capacity to undertake study. Students are entitled to, and are afforded, equal access to educational resources, teaching staff and career opportunities offered through the College.

Withdrawal and Deferment


Diploma of Performance Practice, Advanced Diploma of Arts in Stage & Screen Acting, Certificate IV in Music Theatre full-time mode, Certificate IV in Performing Arts (Dance), Certificate IV in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical Operations), Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre & Events (Technical Operations), and Advanced Diploma of Stage Management: Where a student wishes to withdraw from a course, modules which have been successfully completed will be recorded and credited toward possible later re-entry, provided all co-requisites are also complete and that the duration of the deferment is deemed to be not so long as to affect the re-entry level. Deferment of one year maximum will be considered should a student have completed a whole year. Students should be aware that if they withdraw during a course, they may still owe fees for the remainder of the semester or the remainder of the course. (See Refund Policy above). Students wishing to defer must apply in writing, stating their reasons for deferment. If deferment is approved, students will need to provide a statement of their activities during this period of absence upon re-entry into the course. Students will then be re-located into the appropriate module, based on individual merit. Students are advised to carefully consider the difficulty of resuming training after a break and should discuss this at length with the Course Manager or Director. Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance full time and part-time mode, ACTIVATE youth program, ACCESS short course program. There is no deferment option for the above courses, please refer to the withdrawal/refund policy.

Disclosure of Information (Privacy Act)


ACTT protects the personal information of all students, staff and other personnel. ACTT collects personal information to ensure valid enrolment of each student and for any required reporting to government agencies. This information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email and details of the person to contact in case of emergency. Financial information is collected in order to bill and receive payment for tuition and other charges. ACTT does not pass on any personal information to any third party without a students permission, apart from ASQA, DET and DIAC (International Students) as required under the Colleges registration obligations. Your records are available for your personal inspection by requesting access to the Course Manager and/or the Director or Registrations Advisor. From time to time ACTT will post or email information about the college and courses to students, unless there is a specific request to not receive this kind of information. We are committed to handling your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act. ACTT will never sell your personal information to a third party and will only provide it to DIAC, DET, or ASQA as required by law. Delivery Practices
ACTT has developed strategies to deliver training that provide the most effective and relevant methods for each course. Most of ACTTs courses include a large degree of practical activity supported by a substantial and well-structured theory and knowledge based program. Each module within a program is delivered by a suitably qualified and experienced teacher. Usually a teacher will have a combination of professional experience and a high level qualification in the field they teach, as well as some formal teacher-training and assessment qualification. Attendance Policy
Purpose
The College has a rigorous policy concerning attendance. This is designed to impart and develop the level of professionalism required in the industry. This policy was developed in response to both students and tutors wishes. It is crucial that each student accepts their individual responsibility for consistency and reliability as regards attendance and punctuality. The College attendance policy is that students must have a minimum attendance record of at least 80% for each individual module or subject and the overall attendance for the course must not fall lower than 80%. If attendance falls below the minimum then a student will not be passed for that particular subject, whether or not they have been assessed as competent in the learning outcomes. All subjects must be passed for a student to be eligible for a specific qualification. If opportunities for off-campus placement arise for any students, the same minimum attendance requirements will apply. However, whilst the College requires a minimum attendance for students to pass, courses only function with full and prompt attendance from each student. Much of the tutorial work involves group tasks and rehearsals. It is crucial that each student accepts their individual responsibility for consistency and reliability as regards attendance and punctuality. You should note that your attendance history can be a significant factor in determining whether the College will permit you to progress from semester to semester (or module to module in the case of short courses). This progress is not automatic and your ability to be reliable and punctual is a very important consideration in your assessment. Whether you have career plans in the entertainment industry or elsewhere punctual attendance is vital behaviour if you are not to create a major inconvenience and possibly affect your career prospects.

Contact Details
Students have an obligation to advise the College of any changes in their contact details as soon as they occur.

Roll Marking
Students may be asked to sign on when they arrive at the College and individual tutors will mark the roll at the commencement of each class. Late arrivals will be classified as absences (see below).

Unexplained Absences
Unexplained absences from class, or lateness, are not acceptable. Unexplained Absences means absences that the tutor was not anticipating and hadnt planned for. Arriving after the class has begun also constitutes an unexplained absence and will be recorded in the attendance roll as such. Important: Some courses have very specific limits on the number of acceptable absences from classes. This often relates to the importance of industry standards to the training program. Information related to absences is provided in detail for each course.

Late Arrivals
Full-Time Courses: Diploma of Performance Practice, Advanced Diploma of Arts in Stage & Screen Acting, Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance, Certificate IV in Music Theatre, Certificate IV in Performing Arts (Dance), Certificate IV in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical Production), Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre & Events (Technical Operations), and Advanced Diploma of Stage Management: Students who arrive late for class must report to the office and sign the late book. Important: Class teachers have the discretion to refuse late entry to classes. Students who are late may still be marked absent on the roll. Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance part-time mode, ACTIVATE youth program, short course program: Students who arrive late for class must be aware of the individual courses policy for lateness. Students are not to enter the class in a disruptive manner and must follow the tutors instructions with regard to when it is appropriate to join in the class. Important: Class teachers have the discretion to refuse late entry to classes.

Explained Absence
Students unable to attend class because of serious illness must contact the College before classes begin on that day i.e. before 8.45am for full time courses or 5.45pm for evening courses. Immediately upon return to College, the student must provide a Doctors Certificate to the Course Manager detailing the nature of their illness. In such circumstances an explained absence will be retrospectively recorded on their roll record for each class they are absent. Note: All attempts should be made to attend class. Even if a student is not able to actively participate because they are unwell, their presence is usually beneficial both to them and the group. Actors very rarely miss performances through illness as they know they have an obligation to their audience as well as their colleagues.

Unless notification is made, and the appropriate medical certificates submitted, an unexplained absence will be recorded for each class the student is absent. Illness which involves extended absence may also mean that a students place in the course is reviewed. However, such circumstances are treated on a case by case basis.

Leave of Absence
Fulltime courses only: Students may apply for leave of absence only in exceptional circumstances. The application must be made on the appropriate form, available from the Course Manager or administration office, and must be made as far ahead of the time requested as possible. Approval is not automatic but is determined on a case by case basis. Extended leave of absence will generally not be granted.

Toilet Breaks and Leaving the Building


Students should use the times provided between classes for toilet breaks. If there is a problem the tutor should be notified at the beginning of the class. Students are not permitted to leave the premises of the school in short change-over breaks. A late arrival to class after these breaks constitutes an absence from the class and will be marked as such.

Attendance at College Productions


Performing arts is all about performing! Seeing the potential end product of your studies and giving support to your fellow students is an essential ingredient for your own development. It is therefore expected that all students attend all College productions. Unless an open dress rehearsal is scheduled during class time, students must attend either a preview performance or one of the public performances that follow. Prebooking is essential and can be made through the front office to gain complimentary tickets.. Students can attend a preview free of charge and no charge will be made for attending the public performances provided all tickets are not sold. Failure to attend productions will be regarded in the same way as absences from class. Any student assisting on FOH duties is also entitled to see the show at no charge. This may, however, be on a different night. The Administration Staff keep an attendance list of FOH helpers.

Extra-Curricular Activities
No enrolled performance or production student is to participate in theatre, film or television work outside the College, whether paid or unpaid, unless permission is applied for and approved in writing by the Course Supervisor or Director. A conflict of interest is undesirable, however each case is considered on its merits.

Messages/Contacts
Students who know, for whatever reason, that they will be, or are likely to be, late for sign-on or for a class or rehearsal, must contact the office and leave a message on the answer machine or with the receptionist. An unexplained no-show is not acceptable. The office will only deliver students messages in exceptional circumstances. Each class group is expected to create a phone contact network, so that important messages or opportunities can be quickly relayed to all. Students must ensure that the College has current contact details on file. It just as important that next-of-kin or family members details are also current.

Assessment Policy
ACTTs accredited courses are competency-based training. This means that the content of the teaching program is structured so that students have to demonstrate competency in a particular module against a range of Learning Outcomes or Units of Competency. To demonstrate competency, students must acquire a set of assessable skills specified in the Outcomes or Units. These skills are often described in detail within the Assessment Criteria and are developed through a range of class exercises. Criteria are ultimately assessed through a broad range of assessment tasks. Competency-based training requires that course work is assessed as being either: Competency Achieved or Competency Not Yet Achieved. All the competencies must be achieved to receive the award of the course. ACTTs assessment policy is designed to provide each student with sufficient information and time to prepare for assessment activities and to be assessed using appropriate methods by suitable teachers. The aim is to enable students to achieve competency. Tutors and assessors provide written feedback at the end of each module or Semester and students have the opportunity to discuss these reports with the relevant staff member. Many modules require completion of an end-of-module presentation and/or a series of other assessment tasks throughout its duration, such as journal entries, oral/written exercises and in-class presentations. Advanced modules are often also assessed for integration with other skills, for example voice, acting and movement in a Performance Studies Module. The College encourages flexible learning methods and encourages students to work at their own pace and in their own way always providing that the Learning Outcomes are achieved by the end of the module.

Satisfactory Progress
On satisfactory completion of an accredited course, students receive a Testamur, in accordance with the Australian Quality Training Framework standards. If a student does not achieve the competency required at the first attempt, the result will be recorded as not yet competent. That student will then be required to attempt the assessment again at another time. More than one attempt may be allowed provided the first assessment was attempted in the time set. It must be noted that: all competencies of each term/semester must usually be achieved before the next term/semester, some assessments, for example in Performance Studies cannot be duplicated, and: all competencies of a whole course must be achieved before being awarded the qualification or Statement of Attainment. If a student fails to attempt an assessment by the due date, several consequences are possible: 1. The competencies attached to the module will be recorded as not yet achieved. 2. Reassessment: where a student has not satisfactorily completed a section needed to be assessed. 3. "Incomplete": a result of ill health (Doctor's Certificate is needed) and a later assessment set. 4. Module failed and needs to be undertaken again, at the students costs, before progressing. High standards of application and commitment are expected from all students, and tutors and assessors have a responsibility to the larger student body to maintain these standards. Progress through a course is not automatic and a students place can be terminated if it is evident that insufficient progress is being made or that they will not benefit from further study.

Non Accredited Courses


Students who satisfactorily complete a non-accredited course receive an ACTT Certificate of Achievement or a Statement of Completion (short courses, workshops, masterclasses etc.).

Assessment Appeals
ACTT is committed to providing a learning environment in which complaints are responded to with a minimum of distress and maximum protection to all parties. The College is committed to ethical and responsible management, transparency in its decision making process and a visible, accessible and fair assessment process. As many modules allow for multiple attempts at the assessment, appeals are often only necessary in unusual circumstances. The College views student feedback as an opportunity to review and continuously improve its policies and practices and also to gain an insight into student levels of satisfaction. At the end of every course or semester students are invited to complete a Student Evaluation Form. These are used by the Course Manager to help us re-evaluate the course to better suit student needs. This information is kept confidential. Where a student has an individual grievance on their assessment, a request for a review of the assessment may be formally made to the Director of Studies, Course Manager or Head of ACTT. The request will be considered at a meeting of the tutors concerned and the Board of Studies. If it is decided that the grievance is justified, a re-assessment event will be conducted at an alternative time and with an independent party present to assess. A student may appeal in writing to a tutor who has assessed the learning outcomes within a module as not yet achieved, and a further assessment task may be allowed so as to demonstrate competency. Where a student wishes to appeal further, they need to arrange to discuss this matter with the Course Manager and the tutor concerned. An independent person may be included in these discussions. The Course Manager will decide whether it is appropriate for another tutor to re-assess. If a student is not happy with the decision made at this level, they may take the matter to the Head of ACTT who will review the student and tutors history with the Board of Studies. A student who wishes to appeal after a second attempt must do so in writing. The panel will then record a response to the appeal and this will be considered by the Head of ACTT and the Board of Studies. The Board of Studies' decision in these matters will be final.

Grievances and Appeals


The Colleges procedures for handling complaints and grievances are based on confidentiality, impartiality, procedural fairness, protection from victimisation and prompt resolution. Where a group of students have identified a grievance this can initially be raised at a student representative meeting. These are held every term with two representatives from each class present. The student body should then prepare minutes of the meeting and submit to the Course Manager or make a representation to the Director of Studies, the Head of ACTT or the Board of Studies meeting, whichever is most appropriate. If a student has a grievance with the College regarding financial issues they should discuss this first of all with the Course Manager as an issue can often be resolved easily. If the issue cannot be resolved this way, they must submit their grievance in writing to the Head of ACTT who will consider the grievance and: (a) If the grievance is considered to be valid, decide upon appropriate action or an alternate arrangement which is acceptable to both;

(b) If agreement cannot be reached, the student is able to take the grievance to the Student Representatives who will take the matter up with the Board of Studies on their behalf. If a student has a complaint against a tutor, another ACTT student or other personal issues then this should be made in writing to the Course Manager. Alternately, the Grievance Contact Officer may be approached independently and confidentially by the student (this is currently the Head of ACTT). Full details of the grievance procedure are located in the Policy Manual, a copy of which is located in the Library and in the Admin Office. The process can also be explained fully to you by the Grievance Officer. Collecting Feedback
Collecting feedback from students
Module evaluations All students are required to complete an end-of-module evaluation form for each module undertaken. Students have the opportunity to evaluate the module based on relevance of material learned and quality of delivery. These are issued by the Course Manager towards the end of the module, completed by the student and then returned to the Course Manager in the last week of that module. They may be completed anonymously if preferred. As part of ACTTs continuing commitment to improvement and to meet its quality requirements, all students are also encouraged to complete a standard online evaluation form every six months or at the end of their course; whichever is more frequent. College systems and facilities evaluation All students are asked to complete an evaluation form that gathers information about the students experience and comments on the service and facilities of the college. These must be issued immediately prior to the end of the course or term or semester preferably in the last teaching week. They must be completed during class time and placed by the teacher in the envelope provided and returned to the office. Class meeting feedback

Each class is encouraged to meet at least once each month to discuss any issues or make any recommendations to the college on the class behalf. Minutes of the meeting are provided to the Course Manager. Any common concerns or suggestions are also reported to the Student Representative Council by the class representatives. SRC Feedback Student Representative Council meets at least quarterly to collectively report on each class groups comments, issues and recommendations. The collective comments are then minuted and provided to the Course Manager and Head of ACTT. These reports are presented to the external Industry Advisory Committee meeting every six months.

Analysing Feedback
Course feedback Course feedback from students and teachers is analysed as soon as practical after collection by the Course Manager. The analysis is based on quantitative and qualitative assessments. The overall analysis also includes responses gained from tutors evaluation forms, and from students college feedback forms. A report written by the Course Manager is submitted at the end of semester tutors meeting and is also tabled at the Industry Advisory Committee meeting.

Responding To Feedback
Based on the summary report, action is taken as appropriate. In the instance where it is determined that a modules delivery and or content is no longer meeting the standard required or the outcomes necessary, this information is added to the agenda of the tutors meeting and the academic boards meeting to discuss and suggest improvements to be undertaken. This recommendation is then presented to the Training and Assessment Committee for comment and approval. Once approved, any changes are implemented and a review mechanism put into place to track the progress, evaluate the success and further improve the process.

Student Communication
Weekly Whole Company meetings are held for the full-time students at an appropriate and regular time. They are a part of the colleges internal communications system, and vital in promoting a sense of community within the College. They are scheduled and chaired by the Course Manager and/or Course Supervisor/s. The meetings are quite informal and are an effective way of contacting, and getting information to and from, the whole student body. Initially, theCourse Manager give any messages. Other staff members are then given the opportunity to speak, followed by students with messages and announcements. The informal agenda deals with anything from administrative or organisational matters, to announcements about impending student performances or even birthday parties. All full time day students are required to attend the meeting. All staff at the College are encouraged to attend. Part-Time Students For tutors of part time courses the Course Manager or Course Supervisor keeps in regular contact and communicate matters of interest and collect issues of concern. Newsletters

ACTT has a fortnightly student e-newsletter which is circulated to students and contacts of ACTT. Email communication is extremely useful for maintaining currency and all students are encouraged to ensure that they check their email inbox daily.

Support Mechanisms
ACTT recognises the physical, emotional and financial demands that training in performance entails. Full time students in particular not only experience the challenge of living on a strict budget, and perhaps away from familiar support networks, but also manage the demands of a journey of self-discovery and personal exploration.. For these reasons communication with staff and fellow students is vital.

The Students Representative Council (SRC)


The SRC (full-time students only) provides a forum for student opinion and a focus for the Colleges social events. Every Semester the group elects a representative who leads a weekly class meeting and attends a regular SRC meeting. SRC meetings are minuted. The SRC also plays a major role in fundraising for productions and enhanced student amenities.

Welfare Procedures
Communication Students are encouraged to communicate freely with Tutors regarding progress and any difficulties that may be experienced in relation to the work. Tutors time, however, is limited so please pre-arrange these meetings where possible. Each course has a Course Supervisor who is available to discuss general issues or concerns relating to the course as a whole. They are usually available at specified times each week if a student wishes to discuss their general progress in their course, or issues to do with group inter-relationships. The Course Manager liaises directly with all tutors and Course Supervisors, so can provide additional support when required. To meet with the Head of ACTT, students will need to arrange an appointment unless the matter is particularly urgent. Problems should be discussed as soon as they arise and not left to develop into major difficulties. Where a concern or a perceived problem exists it is expected that students will initiate discussions with the appropriate staff. It is important however that wherever possible these discussions take place outside class time.

External Support Services


The College can, on request, or as considered necessary, refer students to specialist diagnostic and support services such as medical practitioners, physiotherapists, financial advisors, counsellors or speech therapists. Students should contact the Course Manager for any assistance they may need.

Students in a performance course constitute a "company" both in spirit and practice for the duration of their study at ACTT. Accordingly, commitment needs to be wholehearted to achieve the desired goal of excellence. If students let the ensemble down, they let themselves down. It is essential that students learn the expectations, behaviour and attitudes appropriate to working in the profession just as much as they master the fundamental skills necessary to sustain future employment. Studio Behaviour It is essential that the atmosphere in the studio is positive, supportive and focused. Students need to be ready to work at the beginning of the session and to maintain their energy and concentration throughout. Eating, drinking and gum chewing are therefore inappropriate. Interruptions from mobile phones will not be tolerated; they should be switched off at the beginning each class, or preferably, left at home. At the end of each class, please return the room to a neutral state. This means closing windows, stacking chairs, props and costumes and taking all your personal belongings with you clothes, water bottles, books etc. Rehearsing Out of Class For many courses a great deal of work occurs in groups within the classroom. This requires periods of intense co-operation between people who may or may not have chosen to work together (just like real life). Developing good working processes and organising time to work in groups is a vital part of performance training. When a rehearsal is scheduled amongst students, treat it as you would if a tutor were present. Daily Exercise Regimes Performance is a physical activity. Each student needs to develop a daily routine that will exercise voice and body, incorporating current class work as well as individual needs. These will become clearer during the course as you learn more about yourself and acquire more skills. It is important that it is daily, or at least regularly, around five times a week. Exercise routines should be reviewed every few weeks. Existing Injuries If you have an existing injury you have a responsibility to inform the tutor in a class where aggravation might occur, especially, but not only, in movement. You must never engage in activities where you might injure yourself and/or jeopardise the safety of others. All injuries must be reported to the Course Manager on enrolment and on an ongoing basis as they heal and/or occur. Appropriate Dress Students must dress appropriately for each class and rehearsal. Rehearsal gear is suitable for most classes; ie loose, comfortable pants and tee shirts, and soft soled shoes. Make-up and jewellery should not be worn to regular classes as this inhibits the individual and creates a barrier to the process of the work. Jeans, restrictive clothes and hard soled or high heeled shoes are NOT APPROPRIATE for any class. Please consult the equipment required list for your course where relevant. Constructive Criticism The nature of the study at ACTT is such that you are constantly being observed by your teachers and fellow students. The quality and improvement in your work is of utmost importance and personal feedback about your work is integral to it. Hopefully you will see the criticism you receive as being positive. Unfounded praise is far more damaging in the long term than an objective comment which points to areas upon which you may improve. Subjects undertaken during the course will help you gain a vocabulary to comment upon performances observed as well as a framework for accepting criticism of your own work. Be Organised

Students must plan ahead and ensure that they do not become overtired or ill due to involvement in productions. Involvement in productions is not an excuse for lateness to class, absence or failure to prepare written or practical assignment work for individual tutors. Unscheduled Activities Within any course there are 'unscheduled activities'. The nature of acting training requires that students must expect to do a great deal of work by themselves in study and practice. In the case of full time students evening rehearsals and weekend activities are minimal but do arise from time to time in production work and performance. Students must be prepared to meet varied commitments including any presentation. Notice will usually be given to allow students to rearrange other commitments. Organising Your Personal Time Your time should be organised so that your free time can be enjoyed without the pressure of knowing that you have a pile of work you should be doing. You need time for relaxation and other activities. This requires forward planning to ensure that enough time is given to homework and to practice. A positive attitude is essential to making the most of your time. Maintaining Good Health Ill-health can make or break a performer, and recurrent illness is a matter of concern to the student, the tutor and the College. The rigours of the training can take a toll on the student who suffers ill health and those who do not look after themselves properly. It is every individual's responsibility to ensure that their good health is a priority by eating properly, resting sufficiently and exercising regularly (at least once a day).Remember, ill health can put a students place in jeopardy. (Please note the Attendance Policy). Personal Hygiene Attention needs to be paid to your personal hygiene for the sake of your own and other's health. The nature of the course requires that much group work be undertaken which requires close contact, and good personal hygiene is an important consideration for the comfort and health of others in class. Personal hygiene is also basic to the profession. Smoking Smoking is a personal choice, however, if you choose to smoke please be aware not only of the relationship to health, but also its detrimental effects on vocal production and physical stamina. For this reason, students may be requested to give up smoking in order to progress through certain aspects of the course. If you wish to smoke there is a no smoking policy in the College building, courtyard and on the front entry steps. Please dispose of rubbish in the receptacles provided. Alcohol and Drugs The consumption of alcohol or recreational drugs during any day when classes or performances may follow is not allowed. It is unconducive to quality work in the classroom and severely compromises relationships with students and tutors. Borrowing ACTT has lost much valuable equipment over the years as a result of failure of students to return costumes, books etc which they have borrowed. Please return promptly everything borrowed. All items borrowed must

be recorded and students will not be allowed to continue to borrow if items are not returned in good order and on time. Please report any damaged equipment so that it may be repaired for future use. Storage There is limited storage room available for items such as personal props, costumes etc. They may only be kept at the College for the duration of the work for which they are needed in approved locations but must be cleared immediately afterward to allow others to use the space. Valuables Students are strongly advised NOT to bring any valuables to College as security cannot be guaranteed for them. Personal valuables which must be brought to College may be left in the office. Make your own arrangements to keep money, passes etc with you in the studio at all times.

Emergency Procedures
Medical Emergencies Students who are injured in class or while on the premises are required to report immediately to the tutor who will contact the First Aid officer, who will make an assessment of the injury and recommend appropriate treatment. The tutor will then require an official accident report sheet to be completed and witnessed. There is a first aid kit in the kitchen and in the Tutors Room Emergency Evacuation Procedures Emergency evacuation procedures are rehearsed by full time students at least once every semester. At these times students are familiarised with the escape routes from the building and the assembly points outside. If at any time appropriate personnel advise that it is necessary to evacuate the building students should do so without question and in an orderly fashion. They should proceed to the designated assembly points so that attendance rolls can be checked. Under no circumstances should the building be re-entered until the all-clear is given by the appropriate personnel.

Resources and Facilities


A variety of resources are available to ACTT students and there are systems in place to access these. Travel Concession (not available to OS students) Concession travel on government and private transport is available for travel to and from classes for fulltime students only. Passes are available at the office. Student Cards and Numbers Each student (other than short-course program students) receives a student card valid for the year. A $10 fee will be charged to replace lost student cards. The ACTT student card will entitle enrolled students to discount admissions to a number of performance venues, cinemas and productions. Discounts are also available at a number of excellent bookshops and suppliers. Noticeboards The noticeboards are a useful tool for you. There is a noticeboard for part-time and casual work opportunities, student film experience and shared accommodation. There is also a noticeboard which displays class

timetables and changed plans, assessment times etc. They should be checked regularly for changes to room allocation and scheduled classes and other important notices. Library Students may borrow plays and texts from the College library. Library cards must be left at Reception in exchange for the borrowed items. Generally, one item may be borrowed at a time for a maximum of one week. Special Reserve items may be borrowed for 24 hours only. Reference items are not for loan. Photocopier Photocopy cards may be purchased from the office.. Please return empty cards to the office as they are recyclable. If help is needed to use the copier please ask at Reception. Problems with the copier must be reported to the office. Student must not attempt to fix problems themselves. Telephone A public telephone is located nearby Central Station. Phone cards can be purchased from the usual retail outlets. Fax The College fax number is 02 9281 3964 and is available for use, charges apply for this service both incoming and outgoing. Computers Computers and private study rooms are available during office hours only. Use of the computers and printers will be available for college use only and must be booked through the front office. Costumes A wardrobe of costumes exists for use in student productions. The items are not available for personal social use. If a tutor or director accesses the costumes for use in rehearsals, students are responsible for the care, cleaning and return of the item/s. Props A similar situation exists for the use of props. All items borrowed need to be listed and signed for when collected and when they are returned IN GOOD ORDER. Video Equipment Some College video equipment may be made available out of class time if booked for course-related activities. No video equipment can be removed from the building and should only be used in the video studio. Students accessing this equipment are responsible for its security and safe use and must receive training on how to use the equipment prior to access. Audio Basic audio equipment may be borrowed for rehearsing outside class time. It needs to be signed in and out. Students accessing this equipment are responsible for its security and safe use. Lockers Some student lockers are available and, due to space restrictions, they need to be shared. Students have a responsibility to keep them clean and hygienic and food and valuable items must not be stored in them. Students are required to sign for a key at the beginning of the year and to return it at the years end. Mats Some yoga mats are provided for use in class. They are to be collected from and returned to the Mat strorage and carefully folded and stacked in the set area. Students are strongly advised to purchase their own mat at the course commencement and bring to each class.

Staff Offices The staff offices are private and not to be entered without permission by staff. The offices and filing systems are locked for security purposes and staff computers are protected by passwords.

Personnel
Training and Assessment Committee The Committees role is to oversee curriculum issues, student conduct and progress, hear student appeals when required, identify problems or issues associated with the course implementation and liaise with the external Course Advisory Committee. The Committee comprises the Director of the College, key teaching personnel, tutors and others. Industry Course Advisory Committee The Committee's major role is to monitor the curriculum and its relevance to current and emerging industry skills, practice and standards, and to provide advice on methods of assessing prior learning. The Committee is comprised of various representatives from a wide base in the Arts community including film and television directors and producers, MEAA representatives, agents, tertiary institution representatives, theatre representatives and visiting or guest members. Teaching and Administrative Staff Most of the management and teaching staff at ACTT have a long history with the College, are very familiar with the activities which take place throughout the year and have a commitment to the educational policies and mission of the College. Specialist teachers from within the industry and those who are involved in short modules of teaching and /or directing are fully briefed with the College's Mission, aims and methods and are also committed to the same teaching philosophy as the College. Students will be provided details of the teaching staff for their course when they start. Bring a Friend Have you thought about inviting your friends to a Drop-In workshop? This is a great way for them to find out about ACTT and the acting options available to them. Alternatively ask them to ring ACTT and well talk through a quick overview of what might be of interest to them. Also please encourage friends and family to register for the ACTT newsletter which will keep them informed of the college activities including student productions and special offers.
