Tutorial #2 (For discussion in week #5 – Oct. 7 - 11)
==================================================================
Problems in this tutorial deal with shear forces and bending moments in beams. Very often
their values along beams are presented as shear force diagrams (SFD) and bending moment
diagrams (BMD). There are two approaches we have studied for the construction of SFD
and BMD:
(a) Approach #1: Studied in Year 1 – “Statics and Hydrostatics”. For different segments
of the beam derive expressions for the shear force and bending moment. Sketch the
SFD and BMD using these expressions.
(b) Approach #2: Discussed in class this semester. Determine support reactions. Using
the relationships among load intensity (p), shear force (V), and bending moment (M)
directly sketch the SFD and BMD. This is the approach we will mostly use in the
present module. However, in some cases where the loading varies in complicated ways,
we might still be compelled to use approach #1.
In Prob. (4) below sketching of SFD and BMD is required. In general it will be convenient
to use approach #2. Still, it would be good if you repeat the problem using approach #1
and compare the results. (Of course the results should be identical!).
