MASTHEAD The masthead on the cover of this magazine is layered on top of the main image which shows that

many people know who the artist is on the front cover. The mast head is one of the first things that the audience will see as it is bold and uses red which is a bright colour that stands out.

COLOUR PALETTE There are three main colours used in this magazine they are: Black, White and Red all of these colours are bright and stand out well. Red is used for the masthead and also for some of the cover lines featured on the cover. White is used for the background of the magazine and also for the main cover line which is the headline about the artist that is on the cover. Black is used for the various cover lines on each side of the cover as it stands out against the black background it is also used in the main image as the artist is wearing a black jacket and black sunglasses. The colours used are quite basic and are quite commonly used for the genre that is portrayed through this magazine cover.

COVER LINES The cover lines on this magazine match the colour palette this attracts the audience as the colours used are bold and bright and standout against the white background. Also the cover lines are mainly shaped around the main image, and the main cover line stands out as it is a bigger font from the rest of the cover lines and stand out because the bright colours stand out against the artists black jacket.

TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience for this magazine is mainly young adults also males as the colours used are quite rocky and bold. Having an image of Jay-Z on the front may attract the male audience as they may think that he is an icon and will look up to him because of the popular music that he has made.

RULE OF THIRDS This magazine shows the rule of thirds as the layout of the cover is set like there is an imaginary grid with the centre of the grid being the face of the artist, this is the first thing that the audience will notice as it is the main part of the magazine cover. Also the masthead is part of the rule of thirds as it takes up the top part of the magazine and makes the audiences eye draw to it, as does the main cover line. MAIN COVER IMAGE The main image of the artist JAY-Z that is featured on the cover of this issue of rolling stone is in keeping with the colour palette as the colour that the artist is wearing is black which is the main colour used throughout the cover. This is shown on the jacket he is wearing and also the glasses. This makes it easy for the cover lines that have been layered on the image to stand out as the production company have used the other two colours on the colour palette to make the main cover line stand out.

LAYERING On the cover of this magazine everything is based around and layered on top of the main image for example all the cover lines are shaped around the image of the artist and also the main feature cover line is layered on top of the image, as is the masthead.

This contents page which was taken from an edition of rolling stone magazine and continues to use the house-style colour scheme that was used on the front cover that was analysed. This contents page is split up into 8 sections; the top section being the title that goes along the very top of the page which shows the title of the page, also the magazine name and the date issued. The colours used in this are in keeping with the colour scheme as the background of that section is red which is bold and eye catching also the colour of the writing in this section is white with a small outline of black to make the writing stand out. The next 3 sections of this contents page are the 3 pictures that run down the left of the page, these are used to show the audience that the people in these pictures will be featured in the main body of the magazine in the corner of each picture a page number is given which leads the reader to the specific page that that person features on. All 3 of the pictures stick to the colour scheme as the first picture introduces the red as the person is seen with red hair although this is very subtle it still sticks to the house-style. The second image is quite dark and although it is a black and white image it brings in a darker aspect and to the contents page. And the third image is a light image and so represents the white of the colour scheme as the background of the image is very pale. The next 3 sections are along the right side of the page and is the contents part of the contents page. All three sections also match the colour scheme with the page numbers being the iconic bright red so that they stand out to the reader when the page is being read. Also that background of these sections is white and the font colour is black. The final section of this page is a small section at the bottom of the page which includes information about what is featured in the cover of the magazine and this aswell has a white background and black font.

This double page spread was taken from an old edition of rolling stone and is an interview with Lily Allen who is a popular well known artist.
