Greetings Brothers! January the 9th marked the beginning of another semester at FIU.

We hope all of you enjoyed the holidays and had a great New Years. Pi Phi Zeta started off the New Year with nine newly initiated members, raising the Zeta roll up to 121, and most taking up positions in the High Zeta. Let us congratulate them on completing their associate membership and embarking on their lifelong True Brother initiative. This spring semester the zeta will be composed of 27 active brothers, with an estimated 15 associate members. We would like to take a moment to thank those of you who participated during the PreInitiation events, and those that partook in Ritual. As always we extend an open invitation to anyone who would like to attend or participate in any Initiation events, or chapter events in general. Please contact the High Rho Jose Paez for any questions regarding anything (305498-8285, email jpaez011@fiu.edu). Philanthropy This years Watermelon Bust was officially the zetas most successful. While the event might have been postponed for a week due to unfavorable weather, everything else went as planned with the first use of a watermelon catapult, complements of the Fall 2011 Associate Member class. We would like to thank Dr. Ken Furton for participating in the events, and volunteering for the Dunk Tank. We successfully raised 2,500 pounds of canned goods and eight hundred dollars; the most in Pi Phis history, with the manpower of 17 brothers and 9 associate members. Brotherhood This year during Family Olympics 3 won the basketball and soccer events, and football was cancelled. During the evening events, XXX won the Ping Pong, and Cup Toss games. As always we would like to thank alumni for their presence at brotherhood events. The High Beta will be scheduling an interactive ZAX session during the semester, at Viertes Haus. We are currently taking suggestions on how to structure the event and make it more fun for those participating. Brotherhood Retreat took place the Fall Semester at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, in Jupiter, Florida. The turnout was very agreeable and events proceeded as usual, including bonding and communication exercises mixed in with sports and canoeing. The evening events included Pass

The Lamp and Burning Faults. We would like to take a moment to thank the alumni who joined us, Daniel Witt and Dean Williams. Recruitment January 23rd running through the 27th will be Rush Week this semester, and all events have already been programmed. We encourage any brothers to join us in the evening events and support recruitment efforts. We would like to solicit the help of any brothers who have a prospective member in mind. Please contact the High Rho who will relay the information to Brother High Delta. Alumni Spotlight of the Month From all of the brothers at Pi Phi Zeta, we would like to award Dean Williams #94 the Alumni Spotlight of the month. Dean has shown a strong presence throughout all of the zetas events, and has offered and provided guidance to brothers who have sought it. He has lived up to and is cultivating his True Brother initiative. Dean was initiated August 27th 2010. During his activity as an undergrad he served as High Alpha and continuously labored for the fraternity, doing things such as making major modifications to the bylaws, setting up and maintaining the local website, and going above and beyond his duties as President. Dean received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy, and is pursuing graduate education at Nova Southeastern University in Accounting.
