ABSTRACTION

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKPLACE PRACTICES

Following Environmental
Workplace Practices is the practice
that involves action or behavior
within the workplace to reduce the
environmental impact. This
practices is minimizing the waste
of people and conserving the
energy and water with use of using those reusable, recyclable
material.

Workplace Practices and Work Instruction refers to the relating

environmental impacts are
recognized and followed. And
clarification is sought where
necessary.
Workplace Practices is the general
guidelines or policies that an
organization implement to keep environmental goals (ex.
Implementing a waste management system in a community or

6
society). one of the example of this are hazard identification and risk
assessment. While,.
Work Instruction is a documented set of guidelines that an employee
or person must follow when performing work-related task to achieve
desired results (ex. How to properly segregate or dispose recyclable
and non-recyclable waste).

What is Environmental Hazard Identification and risk

Assessment?

 Hazard is any source of potential damage or harm to someone or

something.
 Risk is the possibility of something bad happening.
 Risk assessment is the overall process of hazard identification,
risk analysis, and risk evaluation.
 Hazard identification is the process of finding, listing, and
characterizing hazards.

Environment Hazard identification is part of the process used to

evaluate if any particular situation, item, or thing may have the
potential to cause harm. And the term often used to describe the full
process is Risk Assessment.
A Risk Assessment is a thorough look at your workplace to identify
those things, situations, processes, etc. that may cause harm,
particularly to people.

How to minimize environmental risk?

To minimize the environment risk in the nature Here are some keys:
1. Reduce, Reuse and recycle follow thee “R’s” to conserve natural
resources and landfill space.
2. Conserve Water the less water we use, the less water waste will
end up in the ocean
3. Plant a tree Trees provide food and oxygen. Trees also help save
energy, clean air, and help combat climate change.
4. Volunteer volunteer for cleanups in your community.
5. Don’t send chemicals into our waterways segregate those
chemicals in a right place and put a label to the waste if they are
belong to chemical or not.

7
6. Reduce Car Travel Traveling using car is increasing the pollution
into the air.

Relevant Legislation Code and National Standard that Impact

on Workplace Environmental Practice are Recognized and
Followed.

What is Legislation? Legislation is the laws and rules made by the

Parliament, together with, the process by which those that have been
delegated the authority enforce the rules.
What is Code? Codes are laws or regulations that specify minimum
standards to protect health and safety.
What is National Standard? National standards are sets of
guidelines or rules that have been established by a country to regulate
various aspects of society.

 Philippine Clean-Air Act of 1999 (RA 8749) - “AN ACT

PROVIDING FOR A COMPREHENSIVE AIR POLLUTION CONTROL
POLICY AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES “ It established policies to
ensure a clean and healthy environment for all Filipinos,
emphasizing the right to a balance ecology. The law mandates the
formulation of air quality standards and the regular monitoring of
air pollution levels across the country. Furthermore., It regulates
emissions from various sources, including industrial plants and
motor vehicles, and requires them to meet specific pollution control
standards.
 Philippine Clean-Water Act of 2004 (RA 9275) “An Act
providing for a comprehensive water quality management and for
other purposes.’ this act aimed to protect the country’s water
bodies from pollution and ensuring their sustainable use for public
health and biodiversity. The Act mandates industries, households,
and agriculture to control pollution by treating wastewater before
discharge into water bodies, while also requiring the development
of wastewater treatment systems. It also establishes a framework
for managing water quality by creating Water Quality Management
Areas (WQMAs) and implementing local action plans to improve
water standards.

8
 Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (RA 9003)
“AN ACT PROVIDING FOR AN ECOLOGICAL SOLID WASTE
MANAGEMENT PROGRAM, CREATING THE NECESSARY
INSTITUTIONAL MECHANISMS AND INCENTIVES, DECLARING
CERTAIN ACTS PROHIBITED AND PROVIDING PENALTIES,
APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES”
this law is a key to environmental law in the Philippines that
focuses on the systematic management of solid waste to promote
ecological sustainability. This law also promote waste segregation,
recycling, and composting, and ensure proper disposal of solid
waste to protect public health and the environment. It also
prohibits open dumping and mandates the establishment of
sanitary landfills for the final disposal of waste.

 Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008 (RA

9512) “ An Act to promote environmental awareness through
environmental education and for other purposes.” this law primary
goal is to integrate environmental education into formal education
system and encourage sustainable practice in daily life. Also, the
law emphasizes the active participation of the public in
environmental protection, advocating for the creation of
community-based programs to raise awareness about
environmental issues such as pollution, climate change,
conservation, and resource management. Through this law, the
Philippines aims to foster a more environmentally responsible
citizenry that understands the urgency of addressing environmental
challenges and is motivated to contribute to sustainability efforts.

 Philippine Climate-Change Act of 2009 (RA 9729) “An Act

mainstreaming climate change into government policy
formulations, establishing the framework strategy and program on
climate change, creating for this purpose the Climate Change
Commission, and for other purposes.” this law aims to build the
Philippines' resilience to climate change while fostering a
sustainable, low-carbon economy through coordinated action at the
national, local, and community levels. It’s emphasizes the
importance of climate change adaptation and disaster risk

9
reduction, particularly for vulnerable sectors such as agriculture,
health, and coastal communities. It encourages public and private
sector participation in climate change mitigation efforts, including
carbon reduction and energy efficiency initiatives.
Talking about climate change we have Montreal Protocol and Kyoto
Protocol. What does this protocol mean?
 Montreal Protocol Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is
the landmark multilateral environmental agreement that regulates
the production and consumption of nearly 100 man-made
chemicals referred to as ozone depleting substances (ODS). in short
it is ozone-depleting substances (ODS) that is considered one of
the most successful environmental agreements in history due to its
universal adoption and the progress.
 Kyoto Protocol was an international agreement that called for
industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions significantly. It is an international treaty aimed at
combating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions.

Learning Objectives :
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
 Recognize and report potential environmental threats.
 Identifying environmental hazards,

Introduction
In this lesson, Learners will explore the key signs and symptoms
of these threats and understand the importance of promptly reporting
them to the appropriate authorities. They will also learn how to
accurately document the location and extent of the threat, ensuring
that reports follow organizational guidelines. This knowledge will
empower learners to contribute to environmental protection and
sustainability by recognizing and addressing potential threats
effectively.

ACTIVITY

Showing a Picture !
Direction:

In this activity the learners will receive a case study scenario

describing and analyzing looking for signs and symptoms of potential
environmental threats.

Scenario 1: Scenario 2:

Scenario 3;

13
Analysis

To answer the scenarios given, the learners are asked to identify

environmental threats through observation. This includes recognizing
visible signs of damage, such as changes in plant health, the presence
of invasive species, erosion patterns, and pollution indicators.

Scenario 1:

In this scenario, soil erosion is affecting a park's hillside, where

exposed soil and visible roots indicate significant loss of vegetation.
The erosion is causing sediment buildup in a nearby stream. The area
impacted spans about 20 meters. Learners would map the location,
record the damage, and recommend actions like planting vegetation to
stabilize the soil, installing silt fences, and conducting further
inspections to prevent further erosion.

Scenario 2:

An invasive species, such as Japanese Knotweed, is rapidly spreading

along a riverbank, threatening native plants. The infestation covers 50
meters and is crowding out local flora. Learners would document the
location, describe the damage, and recommend removing the invasive
species through mechanical or chemical methods, followed by
replanting native plants and monitoring the area for future infestations.

Scenario 3:

A factory is releasing chemicals into the air, causing damage to plants

and health complaints from nearby residents. Plants show signs of
chemical burn, and residents report respiratory issues. The affected
area spans 200 meters around the factory. Learners would report the
pollution, suggesting air quality testing, investigating the factory’s
emissions, and recommending pollution control measures to protect
the environment and public health.
