Simple & Compound Sentences

A simple sentence is a complete thought with a


subject and predicate.

Tina painted a picture of an apple tree.

A simple sentence is a complete thought with a subject and predicate.

A compound sentence is two simple sentences put together and uses a comma
and a conjunction.

Directions: Write an S on the line if the sentence is a simple sentence.


Write a C on the line if the sentence is a compound sentence.

1. Dad went to the store for milk. ______

2. Ann doesn’t like volleyball, but she loves cheerleading. ______

3. In my lunch box I have a sandwich, chips, and an apple. ______

4. My dog’s name is Muffin. ______

5. I grabbed my umbrella, because it looked like it was going to rain. ______

6. Mom likes to paint her nails and relax. ______

7. At the fair, I rode the huge snake rollercoaster. ______

8. Tom was hungry, so he decided to make bacon and eggs for breakfast. ______

9. Sara, my cousin, likes to come to my house and swim. ______

10. I was feeling sick today, so my mom let me stay home from school. ______
