Objective
To identify and use various kinds of sentences according to structure – compound sentences.

Let’s Recall

Underline the adverbial clause in the following sentences.

1. I will meet you at Mary’s Tapsilog and Barbeque House after the mass.

2. I instructed the crew that the food must be ready when we get there.

3. We will surely eat to our heart’s delight because we are very hungry.

Let’s Understand

A compound sentence is a sentence that contains two or more independent clauses. It is


connected by coordinating conjunctions like;

and –is used to show similar or additional ideas but - is used to show
opposite or contrast ideas so - is used to show consequence or result
or – is used to show choice or alternative for – means with the purpose of; on
behalf of; in support of nor- is used to introduce and negate a
following clause or phrase yet – is used to show contrast with two parts of a
sentence

Examples:

Remember:
Compound sentence is formed when two independent clauses were combined. An
independent clause can stand by itself as a complete sentence. Notice that each sentence has
two independent clauses. The independent clauses are connected by a conjunction to form a
compound sentence. In the examples stated above, we used and, or and but as coordinating
conjunctions.

Masville Performing Arts Group organized a donation drive for the needy children in the
community. The adviser gave them the following reminders:

Miss Benzon is a retired principal who lives just across our house. She is a kind-
hearted lady, and she never refuses to help others in need. Everybody finds her friendly,
so everybody likes her a lot. Her nieces and nephews are her companions at home, and
they treat her out on weekends. She usually invites us to come to her house once in a

while, so she can get to know us better. We have a nice time bonding with one another,
and we consider her like our aunt.

Situation: The school is launching a program on health awareness campaign and as a student
leader, you are tasked to give/write reminders on how to protect oneself from contagious
diseases.

Product/Performance: List of reminders that will be posted on the health corner of every
room.
