PART 1. Introduction

Conjunctions are words that join two or more words, phrases or clauses. The

most common conjunctions include; and, or, but. Conjunctions are often used to join

sentences together. The word and shows addition. The word or shows an alternative.

The word but shows a contrasting idea. These common conjunctions are used in the

texts you read and the sentences you write. They join sentences and ideas together so

the writing and reading can flow smoothly.

Example: Irma wants to buy candies but I prefer chocolates.

Noli is my best friend and cousin.

Forms of Conjunctions
1. And, but, nor, so, and for are single-word conjunctions. Some conjunctions,
however, are used in pairs, as in
What he said was neither kind nor true.
You must either work harder or be fired for inefficiency.
He was not only lazy but also dishonest.
Our teacher both reads Chinese and speaks it well.
2. Conjunctions used in pairs are called correlative conjunctions. Note how
they are used. Figure out where in the sentence the individual word of the
conjunction is located.
1. Either he stops smoking or his wife will leave him.
2. She either sold her watch or gave it away.
3. She sold either her watch or her ring.
4. They’ll come either today or tomorrow.
Correlative Conjunctions are used in pairs. They are:
Either – or both – and
Neither – nor not only – but also
Each conjunctive word is immediately followed by a word, phrase, or clause
which are both similar in function. And conjunctions suggest addition. When the
additional information is two or more items, and is replaced by a comma except the
last. But is a conjunction suggesting contrast. Conjunctive adverbs belonging to the
but group of connectives are: however, nevertheless, still, yet. The adverbial
conjunction though / although expresses the same meaning as but. The sense of “or”
joins two choices in an affirmative statement and nor joins choices in a negative
statement. The so group of conjunctions suggest consequence. Connectives in this
group are: so, and so. The only conjunction used in the for group is for. It suggests
reason with an element of result. For as a conjunction is preceded by a comma to
differentiate it from the preposition for.
Examples:
1. Rosita can write with both her right and her left hand.
Answer: Rosita can write with both her right and her left hand.
2. If you offer him one thousand pesos, he’ll do what you ask.
Answer: Offer him one thousand pesos and he’ll do what you ask.
3. I love the Philippines. It is the land of my birth.
It helps me. To be strong and useful.
Answer: I love the Philippines; it is the land of my birth.
It helps me to be strong and useful.

EXERCISE 1
Direction: Circle the conjunction used.
1. The Covid-19 pandemic is still in the country so everyone is having
precautionary measures.
2. He’ll buy her a ring and a necklace if he wins the sweepstakes.

EXERCISE 2
Direction: Using and, or, or but, make only one sentence out of the two sentences. It
may be simple or a compound sentence.
Example: Hamed lived on an isle.
