Welcome to the English 5 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on


Writing Paragraphs Showing Comparison and Contrast Relationships.

DOGS AND CATS

More often, dogs and cats are described as mortal enemies. The
dogs and cats are alike in many ways and differ in some aspects. Both
cats and dogs have their ability to form a secure and significant bond
with the pet owner. They are both human company and need love and
attention. Likewise, cats and dogs differ in many ways. Cats are more
independent. They are generally cheaper to maintain and less
demanding pets, while dogs are more loyal and obedient. They require
more time and attention than cats. Dogs need time for exercise
including regular walks. Compared to cats, dogs are more expensive
to maintain. However, one of the benefits of having any of these pets
is to manage loneliness and stress by giving us genuine friendship.

Let us now discuss how to write a paragraph showing comparison and
contrast relationships by answering the following questions:
1.What is comparing and contrasting?
2.What are similarities and differences?
3. What is a comparison and contrast paragraph?

4. What are the things to remember in writing a comparison and contrast
paragraph?
5. What words are used that signal a comparison and contrast paragraph
relationships.

Similarity is the state or fact of being similar while difference is a point or


way in which people or things are not the same.

Comparing means describing similarities while contrasting means


describing their differences.

In a comparison and contrast paragraph, you write about the similarities


and differences between two or more people, places, things or ideas.

In writing a comparison and contrast paragraph, you should


remember the following tips:

1. Choose the people, animals or things you want to describe;

2. Organize similarities and differences of your two subjects;

Examples:

b. Differences: but, however, therefore, while and another one

Schools in Private and in Public

The schools in private and in public are alike in few ways and
different in some aspects. Both have teachers, learning facilities and
equipment. However, public schools’ source of funding is different.
Public schools are funded by the national government while private
schools are generally funded through tuition paid by the parents.
Therefore, public schools are more affordable to attend than in private
schools wherein only selected few who can afford to pay tuition can
enter private schools. But whether it is a public school or a private
school, what’s important is for the student to appreciate and grab the
opportunity to acquire knowledge.

A. Rivers and lakes have commonalities. Both are fresh water. They
can be very deep or shallow and have fish living on them.

B. However, rivers and lakes are of great value to human beings.


C. Bodies of water such as rivers and lakes belong to a surface water
type. These can be found all over the country here in the
Philippines.

D. Another one is lakes are large flat body of water surrounded by land
while river is a large flowing water that flows towards the sea.

E. But, they have also lots of dissimilarities. Lakes are usually wide
and round while rivers are long and narrow.
