WHAT’S IN

Do you want to read a story? That’s great! I have prepared a short story
just for you but before that, I want you to get to know the meaning of these
words that can be found in the story. An example sentence is also provided
for each word. Are you excited to know new words today? Let’s go!

lazy --- unwilling to work or use energy

Example: He is a lazy worker and simply doesn’t do his part.

chief --- a leader or ruler of a people

Example: The chief creates laws for the people to follow.

hurricane --- a storm with a violent wind

Example: Their homes were considerably damaged by the hurricane.

townspeople --- the people living a particular town or city

Example: All the townspeople were present during the meeting.

2 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
Have you experienced receiving blessings after doing good things? Let us
read the story below and find out what did the farmer do to receive such
blessings.
The Lazy Townspeople

Once, a town was full of lazy people. They did not clean their yards or
streets. The chief hated the laziness. One day, a hurricane passed through
the town. The place looked even worse. A tree was right in the middle of the
main road to the market.
However, people did not bother moving
the tree. The chief came up with an idea. He
asked his helpers to move the tree, dig a big
hole, bury some gold, and put the tree back
in its place. Then he asked the town crier to
ask everyone to come gather by the tree in
the afternoon. The chief asked the people to
move the tree.
“The hurricane should move it,” said a
lazy person.
“We can move around it,” said another.
Almost everyone agreed.
Then, one farmer came forward. He
moved the tree without saying anything.
Nobody came forward to help the man. The
chief asked the farmer to dig the ground. The farmer did so and found a bag
full of gold coins.
“Only you can have it,” the chief said.

Questions:
1. How did the farmer do to receive such blessing in the story?
2. Describe what you see in the picture.
3. How does the picture contribute to the words that the author wrote?
4. If you were going to draw an illustration for the story, what illustration
would you draw and why?

WHAT’S NEW

Did the picture in the story you have read a while ago help you connect
to the message of the story? Fantastic!

Some product of writing or texts are made up of only written words.

Readers have to imagine what is going on by creating images of the characters
and setting in their minds. But would it be fun and engaging if there are
pictures that we can see? Other texts, however, include visual elements like
drawings or photos which increase readers’ understanding and enjoyment of
the text.

Sometimes, texts are even made into films or online activities that
include multimedia elements such as sounds and animations.

It is important to note that writers make intentional choices in order to

share their message or to make their readers feel a certain way. Adding either
visual elements or multimedia elements affect how readers or viewers interact
with and respond to the text.

WHAT IS IT

What are the two kinds of elements that help us better understand the
text?
Correct! These are visual elements and multimedia elements.
Let’s get to know them one by one.

Visual elements help readers see what they are reading. These
include pictures, drawing, comics/cartoons, diagrams.

4 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
Different Visual Elements

1. Lines – it is the path made by a moving point or connected and series

of points.

There are 5 kinds of lines.

Vertical lines suggest height and strength.

Horizontal lines suggest distance

and calm.

Diagonal lines suggest movement or

lack of stability.

Zigzag lines suggest anxiety or

excitement.

5 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
Curve lines suggest comfort and ease.

2. Symbols – it can be used as shortcuts to represent ideas or concept.

3. Colors – it has the strongest effect on our emotions.

Red – warm, angry, adventure, violence, fire, blood, passion, love,

excitement

Blue – cool, calm, peaceful, trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence,

intelligence, faith, truth

6 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
Green – life, renewal, nature, growth, harmony, freshness, safety,
fertility, money, finances, banking, ambition, greedy, jealousy

Yellow – happiness, optimism, creativity, cowardice, madness

Orange – joy, enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity,

determination, attraction, success, encouragement, harvest

Black, White and Gray – simplicity and balance

7 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
4. Gaze – one way to convey meaning or message through an image because
of how a figure is looking at something.

5. Framing – it is the presentation of visual elements in an image, especially

the placement of the subject in relation to other objects. It is a
technique used to bring focus to a subject.

6. Social distance – it is the connection between the viewer and subject.

This shows how close or far away is the subject shown.

8 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
Now that you have discovered the different forms of visual elements, let
us deeply analyze multimedia elements.

Multimedia is the use of a computer to present and combine the

elements such as text, graphic, audio, video and animation with links and
tools that let the user navigate, interact, create, and communicate.

Graphics make the Audio that may

9 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
These multimedia elements help the readers or viewers use sight,
sound and sometimes even other senses to experience what they are reading
or viewing. The power of technology has improved the use of multimedia
through the gadgets and applications that we can use nowadays.

Indeed, knowing the visual elements and multimedia elements enable

us to determine the meaning or message of the texts we read or view. So
next time you read or watch multimedia, ask the questions: how do these
visuals add to the meaning or how I feel? Why did the creator choose these
images for this text instead of something else? Analyze well these elements
to expand your learning about texts and meaningfully understand what they
are all about in your mind and heart.

Trees
by Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
15 NegOr_Q4_English5_Module5_v2
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.
