MATHEMATICS 5 ACTIVITY SHEET

Visualizing Congruent Polygons

I. Learning Competency with Code

The learner visualizes congruent polygons. (M5GE - IIId-22)

II. Background Information for Learners

This Learning Activity Sheet is made for you to learn about how to
visualize congruent polygons. Polygons play important part in how to
make patterns, tessellations, build on polygons to form 3D shapes
and use poly-gons to make other shapes using symmetry.

The term polygon originates from the Greek word “ Poly”

meaning many and -” gon “ meaning angles.

In Geometry (of figures) the word congruent is identical,

coinciding exactly when superimposed.

Look at the two figures below. What can you say about their
corresponding sides and angles ?
V U
S

B A
P E

C D
Y

W X

1
Angle P is congruent to angle S.
Side AB is congruent to side UY.
Side AE is congruent to side XY.
Side CD is congruent to VW.
Thus, polygon ABCDE is congruent to polygon YUVWX
• If polygons have corresponding sides and angles equal to each
other, then they are congruent.
• Two polygons are congruent if you can exactly fit one of them
to the other.

2. Exercises

Activity 1.
Answer the questions in your the answer sheet.

a. Maria’s grandmother made a sash for her. The pattern of the

sash is shown below

1. Are the two triangles in the pattern congruent?

2. Are the two pentagons similar ?
Activity 2
Using a piece of cartolina, cut out 2 congruent polygons with:
1. five sides
2. eight sides
3. 10 sides
4. 7 sides
5. six sides
Then paste it on a long size bond paper.

3. Guide Questions

When do we say that two polygons are congruent?

Two polygons are congruent if:

a. Both have the same shape and size.
b. Tracing of one fits the other.
c. Their corresponding angles and sides are congruent.
