LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATH 6 (WEEK 3)

QUARTER 4
Name of Pupil: ______________________________ School: ____________________
Section: ___________________________________ Score: _____________________

Learning Competencies:
1. Reads and interprets electric and water meter reading..(M6ME-IVd-100)
2. Solves routine and non-routine problems involving electric and water consumption..(M6ME-IVcd-101)

Lecture/Content:
An electric meter is a device used to measure the amount of electricity consumption in
kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Your electric meter measures the amount of electricity you use. Just as you purchase
kilograms of meat; grams of milk of liters of gasoline, you buy kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity.
In an electromechanical meter, you will notice that there are five dials and inside each dial is a pointer
which indicates the number to be read. The pointers will alternately turn clockwise and
counterclockwise . These dials measure the number of kilowatt-hour (kWh) you use in 1s,
10s, 100s, 1 000s and
10 000s.
A B C D E

The illustration shows the following meter reading on each dial:

Dial E: The pointer is directly on number 4. Record as 4.
Dial D: The pointer has just passed 9, and is between 9 and 0. Record as 9.
Dial C: The next dial has passed 7, and is between 7 and 8. Again, record the smaller number which is 7
Dial B: The pointer looks like it is right on 4 but, the dial to its right has not passed zero. So, you would
record this as 3

1
Dial A: The pointer is between 5 and 6. Record the smaller number which the pointer just passed, which is 5.

Thus, the electric meter reading is 53794 kWh (kilowatt-hour).

Example 1 Read and interpret the dials on the electric meter below.
Start reading the dials from right to left.

0 7 4 1 5

So, the meter reads 07415 kWh.

Example 2 Read and interpret the dials on the meter below.

Start reading the dials from right to left.

2 4 1 2 8
So, the meter reading is 24128 kWh.

Example 3 Draw the pointers on the dials to show 05630 kWh.

READING WATER METER

Aside from electricity, you also need to access to clean water. People need water in most
household chores like cooking, washing, and cleaning. Of course, water is also a necessity in many
industrial operations. Water is as expensive as electricity so careful usage is advised.

A water meter shows the monthly water consumption, and this is the basis of how much you
should pay in a month. Like reading an electric meter, it is equally important to know how to read your
water meter. This helps you verify the bills paid each month. Monitoring your monthly water consumption
can also motivate water conservation efforts.
A water meter is a device that measures water consumption. The older style of water meters is that
with small dials. It looks like a series of small clocks that turn clockwise. The unit we use for this measurement is cubic
meters (m2). The rules of reading a water meter with dials are similar to the way an electric meter is being read.

2
To read water meters:
Start reading from the right to left (clockwise). Read the number by the pointer of the dial. When pointer is
between two numbers, the lower is recorded.
When the pointer is directly on the number, look at the dial to the right. If t has passed zero, use the next
higher number. If the dial has not passed zero, use the next lower number.
Record the numbers from right to left.
Example 1 Read and interpret the dials on the meter below. The rightmost dial has
the highest value.

To get the exact meter reading, start from right to left or the highest
numbered dial (clockwise).

So, the water meter shows 3518 m2.

Some water meters have seven digits and the consumption reading are given in cubic meters (m3)
and Liters (L). in the water meter below, the first four digits represent
cubic
meters (m3) while the last three digits (usually in red) represent liters. However, only the first four
digits are recorded.

Example 2 Write the meter reading for each.

0 0 1 3 4

0 1 4 6 8

0 0 1 4 5 0 8

1 7 9 2 0 1 8

2 8 0 1 2 6 0
Answer:

a. The numbers are from a five-digit water meter. The reading is 134 m3.

3
b. The numbers are from a five-digit water meter. The reading is 1 464 m3.
c. The numbers are from a seven-digit water meter. The reading is 14 m3.
d. The numbers are from a seven-digit water meter. The reading is 1 792 m3.
e. The numbers are from a seven-digit water meter. The reading is 2 801 m3.

LAS 4
Answer the following. Show your solution.
1. The Cruz family had an electric consumption reading of 1 602 kWh last month. Currently, their
meter reads 1 958 kWh. How much does the Cruz family need to pay if the rate is ₱ 3.00 per
kilowatt-hour? (1 point)
2. Mr. and Mrs. David paid a total of ₱ 2 571.25 for their one month-due electric bill. If their
previous reading was 351 kWh and the present reading was 956 kWh what was the rate per
kilowatt-hour? (1 point)
3. The Bueno family paid ₱ 2 736.00 for their June water bill. If each cubic meter of water cost
₱ 18.00 , how many cubic meters of water did the family consume?
4. For his November bill, Mr. Antonio paid ₱ 754.00 . The reading for October was 674 m3. If
each cubic meter of water cost ₱ 26.00 , what was Mr. Antonio’s meter reading for November?
5. Aling Rosa read her water meter in the first week and recorded 961 m 3. In the next week she
reread the meter and recorded 981m3. In the following weeks, she recorded 1 004 m 3. What was
Aling Rosa’s average weekly water consumption?
