Let’s play, Who wants to be a Millionaire?

B. Motivation (Engage)

Subject Integration – Araling Panlipunan

Drill: Continents and their Countries

Strategy: Numbered Heads Together
Mechanics:
1. Learners will be divided into group of 5.
2. Assign a number to each member of the group.
3. As the teacher flashes the name of the country she will also draw a
number and all the pupils assigned with that number will give the name
of the continent where it belongs.

C. Presentation (Explore)

Who among you loves to travel? Who would love to go abroad? Do

you know that when you travel to other countries you will notice that
their time is different from our time? Today we will find out how these
things happen.

1. Presenting Examples/ instances of the new lesson

Design Thinking: EMPHATIZE

Jea’s father works in London. They have constant communication

through phone calls and video calls. One day his father told her that he
will be calling her the next day at 6:00 pm or 1800 Philippine time. What
is the time in London will father call her?

2. Comprehension Checkup (Literacy)

a. Where does Jea’s father work?

b. How often does he call his family here in the Philippines?
c. Why is it important to have constant communication with your loved
ones working abroad?
Empathize: The teacher empathizes with pupils whose parents are
working abroad. The teacher can check if they have someone to help with
their assignments and can offer help if they need it.
d. Why do we need to value the time we spend with our family?
e. What is asked in the problem?
f. How can we solve this problem?
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills (Explain)

Design Thinking: DEFINE

Define: In this part, we can gain an insight into whether our learners are
familiar with using a map or globe, and be understanding of their needs.
The Philippines and London belong to different time zones so the
time between these two countries is not the same at a particular time of
the day.
We must use the World Time Zone or Map to know or calculate the
time in different countries of the world.

Let the pupils watch a video about Time Zone.

1. What is the lesson in the video?
2. Why do we have different times in the world?

Time Zones and Meridians

The earth is divided into time zones by invisible lines called
meridians. A meridian is a circle that passes through the North Pole and
the South Pole. The meridian that passes through Greenwich, England is
marked 0-degree meridian or 0-degree longitude. It is called the prime
meridian. It is used as the reference point from which all longitudes are
measured. Before it was called GMT (Greenwich Mean time) but is now
referred to as Universal Time Coordinated or UTC.
You can also tell the time based on the time in the Philippines – it
is called Philippine Standard Time (PST). You can find the time
in
another country based on the time in the Philippines. We are 8 hours
ahead of UTC.

Let us solve the problem.
Given: 6:00 PM or 1800 Philippine time
Solution:
Write the time in the 24-hour system. In the problem, it is 1800.
Let us look at the table, London is -8 in PST or Philippine Standard Time,
so we subtract 8 hours, thus
1800 – 0800 = 10:00 AM in London
Example 1:
If it is Wednesday 11:30 am in the Philippines, What is the time in
Dubai, UAE?
Solution:
Write the time in the 24-hour system.
11:30am = 1130
Let us look at the table above. Now, we can see that Dubai, UAE is
-4 PST or Philippine Standard Time. So, we subtract 4 hours,
1130 – 0400 = 0730
Thus, the time is 7:30 am on the same day.

Example 2:
If it is Sunday 8:55 pm in the Philippines, What time in Winnipeg,
Canada?

Wawa, Balagtas, Bulacan

104728@deped.gov.ph
(044) 308-2588
Solution:
Write the time in the 24-hour system.
8:55pm = 2055
Let us look at the table above. Now, we can see that Winnipeg,
Canada is -14 in PST or Philippine Standard Time. So, we subtract 14
hours,
2055 – 1400 = 0655
Thus, the time is 6:55 am on Saturday.
Let the pupils work on the problem and stress that it is easier if
they are going to use the 24-hour time format.

E. Application (Elaborate)

Design Thinking: IDEATE

Brainstorming

Group Activity: Group the pupils into 4. Let them answer the problem
given. Write your solution and present your work when all the groups
have done it.

Design Thinking: Prototype

Physical Models of Clock

Ask the groups to present the time in the Philippines and the country
stated in the problem by making a sketch of the clock and discuss their
answers on the board.

Group 1: Your sister works as a nurse in one of the hospitals in Sydney,
Australia. She is a front liner treating COVID-19 patients since the
pandemic started. She calls every 7:00 pm in the Philippines to check if
your parents and other siblings are all okay. What time is it in Sydney
when your sister makes these calls?

Group 2: Gary is a public school teacher in Balagtas, Bulacan. For extra

income, he teaches language and communication subjects online. His
clients are mostly non-English speaking learners in Japan. What time
should he go online if his first session starts at 8:00 pm in the
Philippines?

Group 3: Jessica has been living in Canada for more than 10 years. Her
mother is flying to Canada to visit her. The trip from the Philippines to
Canada takes 14 hours and 30 minutes. If her mom’s flight departs from
Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 8:00 am, at what time will the
airplane arrive at the Canada Airport?

Group 4: Tony lives in Bangkok, Thailand. His brother lives in the

Philippines. The boys would call each other every day at 2:00 pm in the
Philippines. What time is it in Thailand?

Processing the Activities

a. How did you find the activity?

b. How do you solve the problem?

c. What do you think, are there more men than women working

abroad? Why?

F. Generalization (Elaborate)

Lead the learners to give the following generalization by asking:

How can you calculate time in the different world time zones in
relation to the Philippines?

Wawa, Balagtas, Bulacan

104728@deped.gov.ph
(044) 308-2588
To calculate time in the different world time zones in relation to the
Philippines, we need to convert the time into 24-hour time and use the
world time zone table to know if we need to add or subtract time.
How can we value time?
Time is Gold. Time is precious. Spend it wisely and stop wasting
time on unimportant things.
IV. Evaluation

Design Thinking: Test

To assess the proficiency of learners’ attainments.
