Today, we are going to ask questions to check your understanding of the information
presented. Read the online news article carefully and answer the questions that follow.
CNN – Everyday, Filipina nurse April Abrias walks six miles to monitor 30 patients who are
suspected to have the novel coronavirus in a rural province north of the Philippines’ capital,
Manila.
The 29-year-old midwife doesn’t have a surgical mask to cover her face – instead, she wears
a cloth mask that provides insufficient protection from the virus, which has killed more than
46,00 people worldwide, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.
“I’m ready but not well-equipped (but) it’s my duty to help in this time of pandemic.” –April
Abias
At least 17 frontline coronavirus medics have already died in the Philippines, and more than
600 have been in quarantine, according to CNN Philippines.
Abrias not only worries for her profession. As she makes her daily calls, there is little to stop
her from spreading the virus.
One of her patients lives in a fruit and vegetable market, which as an essential service isn’t
subject to the same lockdown rules that have silenced busy streets across the island of Luzon
since March 17.
Abrias said the patient had a fever and body aches, so she told him to self-quarantine in his
shop and avoid interacting with other people. He hasn’t been tested for the coronavirus, she
said, because there are no testing kits.
Abias has to assume that he has the infectious disease, and that’s what makes it so scary.
April Abias writes her assessment of Joan Santos, a nurse from the United States who is
under home quarantine.
“Doctors and other health care workers (here)work under conditions of a desperate lack of
personal protective equipment, as do others in many other countries,” said Esperanza Cabral,
a Filipino cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist, who once served as the Secretary of the
Philippines Health Department.
The World Health Organization says 96 people have died from the coronavirus in the
Philippines, a country of 105 million people, and medical officers are warning of an
impending crisis if help doesn’t come soon.

Activity 1
Independent practice
Ask five questions that may deepen your understanding on the online news article presented.
Make sure you include powerful questions such as how, why, and what if.
Activity 2
Ask five questions that gather related details that are not mentioned in the online news article
presented.
Asking good questions is the KEY for learning. You are driven to look
answers, enthusiastic to learn about something and challenged to explore,
research, investigate, analyze, and more.
Complex questions or higher order thinking questions like how, why, and what
if are more powerful questions for it encourages thinking beyond literal
questions.
What I Can Do
Activity 1
Girl Scouts
Last year, the Girl Scouts in our district celebrated their anniversary with a journey.
What do you think is the meaning of journey? The purpose of this trip was to explore the
virgin forests of Palawan. (What do you mean by virgin?) since the forests of Palawan have
not yet been touched by loggers. Many of the Girl Scouts who went were independent girls
and did not need help in doing basic or essential things like cooking and hiking. What do you
think is the meaning of independent? essential?
Learning the meaning of cooperation helped to make their trip a success. (guess the
meaning of cooperation) By working together well, most of them learned much and enjoy the
trip. They learned the value of preserving or taking good care of our forests to avoid floods
and soil erosion. (what is the meaning of preserving?)

Coral Reefs – Haven of the Sea The Philippines is blessed with abundant natural
resources. With a total coastline of almost 20, 000 km., it is home to the once regarded as the
rarest and most expensive seashell called “conus gloriamus”.
We can find 12,000 species of seashells and 448 coral species in our seas. Fish like to
live in the coral reef and reproduce there. That is why a large population of fish and other
marine animals are found in the coral reefs.
The reef also breaks the waves that may damage the shore. Some even say that coral
reefs might be the source of medicines of the future. The Tubbataha reef located in the Sulu
Sea is the first national marine park in the Philippines UNESCO named it as one of the World
Heritage Sites. Coral reefs are built by millions of corals, tiny animals that attach themselves
together.
They are living and breathing and also get hurt. Dr. Angel Alcala who was awarded
the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government service in 1992 was so interested in coral
reefs. He devoted many years of his life studying and rescuing this important creature. He
found out that coral reefs are destroyed by divers who pound on them to frighten the fish into
the waiting fishing nets.
This practice called was later on prohibited through his advocacy. Dynamite fishing is
another destructive method. When the dynamite explodes, and the fish swimming around are
easily caught. This, too, was later prohibited. Using poison to catch coral reef fish is another
way which destroys coral reefs. No wonder 70% of our coral reef has been destroyed. Dr.
Alcala together with his team from Siliman University experimented with artificial reefs
made of rubber tires.
They found out that a type of coral grew on the tires together with some molluscs and
that it would take only 4 to 5 months before harvesting is done. However, after more
experiments, Dr. Alcala found out that concrete is better to use an artificial reef than rubber
tires because they carry pollutants that can harm people. No one is too young or too old to
rescue the coral reefs and the sea. How can you help protect the sea?

Carbon is truly wonderful. With its four outer shells, carbon easily links with other
atoms in the atmosphere. Thus, numerous carbon compounds are formed. While this may
indicate that carbon is helpful to man, it can also be destructive. Carbon has its good
functions but it should be used well to produce desired results. As humans and animals
breathe out carbon dioxide during respiration, the air retains a little amount of carbon. This is
where the problem lies. Due to the wide use of carbon-based fuels by automobiles, the
combustion of these fuels give off carbon dioxide. Carbon quickly combines with oxygen and
this is when we have to find quick solutions.
With so many cars, buses, and jeeps running, on these fuels, carbon dioxide level in
the atmosphere is high, very high indeed. With the high amount of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere, the terms “greenhouse effect” and “global warming” became household words.
It was found out that the alarming accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been
trapping heat from escaping into the outer space. This has caused man to respond alarmingly
to the situation.
There are new efforts to limit carbon dioxide emissions. If not, there will be disastrous
changes. Global warming will bring about climate change in all parts of the world. As we
now experience, wet seasons, become wetter, there are more flooding, and dry seasons have
become hotter and drier-there are droughts. Man has awakened to the reality of carbon, while
a friend to the environment could also be an enemy if abused and misused.

Jellyfish
Jellyfish is a poisonous creature that lives in the ocean. It does stay in one place; it
floats all around. I am very much afraid of being stung of a jellyfish. It hurts! The jellyfish
stings with its long tentacles, which hang down from its body. The only way to protect
yourself from being stung is to wear a suit over your entire body. I would rather see a large
shark than a swimming jellyfish near me.

Marcos was stealthily buried at the Heroes' Cemetery past noon with full military honors.
Just 10 days earlier, the Supreme Court on November 8, decided that the late dictator can be
buried at the Libingan – nearly 3 months after President Rodrigo Duterte gave his marching
orders for burial preparations. Martial Law victims had filed petitions to block it.
The 21-year administration of Marcos is notorious for its many human rights
abuses. Amnesty International recorded about 70,000 people imprisoned, 34,000 tortured,
and 3,240 were killed from 1972 to 1981 – the years when the Philippines was placed under
Martial Law.
In the past 27 years, the final resting place of Marcos had been highly debated but on
November 18, it was silenced. He was finally buried at the Libingan ng mgaBayani (Heroes'
Cemetery).

In deeling with students on the hih-school level - that is, the second, third, and forth
year of high school - we must bare in mind that to some degree they are at a difficult
sychological stage, generaly called adolesence. Students at this level are likely to be
confused mentaly, to be subject to involuntery distractions and romantic dreamines. They
are basicaly timid or self-consious, they lack frankness and are usualy very sensitive but
hate to admit it. They are motivated iether by great ambition, probably out of all proportion
to their capabiltys, or by extreme lazines caused by the fear of not suceeding or ataining
their objectives. Fundamentaly they want to be kept busy but they refuse to admit it. They
are frequently the victims of earlier poor training, and this makes evary effort doubly hard.
They are usually wiling to work, but they hate to work without obtaining the results they
think they shoud obtain. Their critical faculties are begining to develop and they are critical
of their instructers and of the materiels they are given to laern. They are begining to feel
the presher of time; and althouh they seldem say so, they really want to be consulted and
given an oportunity to direct their own afairs, but they need considerable gidance.

In dealing with students on the highschool level - that is, the second, third, and forth year of
high school - we must bear in mind that to some degree they are at a difficult psychological stage,
generally called adolescence. Students at this level are likely to be confused mentally, to be
subject to involuntary distractions and romantic dreaminess. They are basically timid or self-
conscious, they lack frankness and are usually very sensitive but hate to admit it. They are
motivated either by great ambition, probably out of all proportion to their capabilities, or by
extreme laziness caused by the fear of not succeeding or attaining their objectives.
Fundamentally they want to be kept busy but they refuse to admit it. They are frequently the
victims of earlier poor training, and this makes every effort doubly hard. They are usually willing
to work, but they hate to work without obtaining the results they think they should obtain. Their
critical faculties are beginning to develop and they are critical of their instructors and of the
materials they are given to learn. They are beginning to feel the pressure of time; and although
they seldom say so, they really want to be consulted and given an opportunity to direct their own
affairs, but they need considerable guidance

1. Read grade level text with accuracy, appropriate rate and proper expression.
EN5F-IIc-1.8.1
2. Observe politeness at all times
What ‘s New
Read the selection with sufficient accuracy, appropriate rate and proper expression to support
comprehension. (Read it aloud in front of a partner)
At fourteen, Joselito was one of the youngest boys among the tricycle drivers
operating near the Sta. Ana Market in Manila. When his mother died, his father remarried and
had other children of his own. Joselito preferred to stay with an aunt rather than join the new
family. His aunt earned their living by washing clothes. Joselito became tricycle driver in the
morning to help earn some money. He went to school in the afternoon. Joselito had many
customers. He was always pleasant and cheerful. He was very helpful, too. He carried the
customers’ bags. Sometimes he gave school children a free ride on his tricycle. Through his
efforts, Joselito did not only help his aunt, but made her happy, too
(Read the selection again; this time, do the popcorn reading with your partner.)
(Let your partner read the questions and give your answer orally with fluency. Observe
politeness in asking for clarity in reading the questions.)
Comprehension Check-up
What is the story about?
How did Joselito help his aunt?
How did his aunt earn a living?
What kind of a boy was Joselito?
What did he do with the school children to show his kindness?
What Is It
Discussion:
Should you find some words difficult to read or understand; sound out the letters in a
word or reread the sentence to figure the meaning of an unknown word.
Example:
tricycle - \’trì-se-kel
He is one of the youngest boys among the tricycle drivers operating near the Sta. Ana
Market in Manila.
remarried - \ré-mer-ed
When his mother died, his father remarried and had other children of his own.
What’s More
The North Wind and the Sun had a quarrel about which of them was the stronger.
While they were disputing with much heat and bluster, a Traveler passed along the road
wrapped in a cloak.
"Let us agree," said the Sun, "that he is the stronger who can strip that Traveler of his
cloak."
"Very well," growled the North Wind, and at once sent a cold, howling blast against
the Traveler.
With the first gust of wind the ends of the cloak whipped about the Traveler's body.
But he immediately wrapped it closely around him, and the harder the Wind blew, the tighter
he held it to him. The North Wind tore angrily at the cloak, but all his efforts were in vain.
Then the Sun began to shine. At first his beams were gentle, and in the pleasant
warmth after the bitter cold of the North Wind, the Traveler unfastened his cloak and let it
hang loosely from his shoulders. The Sun's rays grew warmer and warmer. The man took off
his cap and mopped his brow. At last he became so heated that he pulled off his cloak, and, to
escape the blazing sunshine, threw himself down in the welcome shade of a tree by the
roadside.
Gentleness and kind persuasion win where force and bluster fail.

Remember:
Accuracy means reading the words in a selection correctly. There are
strategies you can use to help you read words. For example, you can sound out the letters in a
word or reread the sentence to figure out the meaning of an unknown word.
What I Can Do
Make a group of five members. Each member will choose 2-3 characters from the script of
the reader’s theatre below.
NARRATOR: There was once a young man named Kimana. He wanted to marry the Sky
Maiden. He wrote a letter to her father, the Sun Chief.
KIMANA: (reads letter as he writes) “I, Kimana, a man of earth, wish to marry the Sky
Maiden, your daughter.”
NARRATOR: Kimana went to Rabbit.
KIMANA: (holds out letter) Will you take this letter?
NARRATOR: Rabbit said,
RABBIT: I cannot go to Heaven. (hops away)
NARRATOR: Kimana went to Antelope.
KIMANA: (holds out letter) Will you take this letter?
NARRATOR: Antelope said,
ANTELOPE: I cannot go to Heaven. (leaps away)
NARRATOR: Kimana went to Hawk.
KIMANA: (holds out letter) Will you take this letter?
NARRATOR: Hawk said,
HAWK: I can go halfway. But I cannot go to Heaven. (flies away)
NARRATOR: Then Frog came to Kimana.
FROG: (hops in) Why do you not take the letter yourself?
NARRATOR: Kimana said,
KIMANA: This I cannot do.
FROG: Then I will take it for you.
NARRATOR: Kimana laughed.
KIMANA: (laughs) Can a frog take a letter to Heaven?
FROG: Whatever it is, I can do it. But only if I try. (takes letter in mouth, hops away)
NARRATOR: Now, Frog lived by a well. Every day, the girls who served the Sun Chief
came to this well. They climbed down from Heaven on a web made by Spider. Then
they filled their water jugs and went home.
NARRATOR: Frog put the letter in his mouth and hid in the well. The girls from Heaven
came for water, singing their song.
GIRLS: (come singing)
Good day to you, my sister.
Good day to you.
NARRATOR: They lowered their jugs into the well, and Frog jumped into one. The girls
did not see.
NARRATOR: Then the girls climbed back up the web of Spider. They went into the house
of the Sun Chief and left the jugs in a room.
NARRATOR: Frog was alone. He jumped out of the jug and spit the letter out on a bench.
FROG: (spits out letter)
NARRATOR: Then he hid in a corner.
NARRATOR: The Sun Chief came for a drink of water. He saw the letter and opened it. He
read,
SUN CHIEF: “I, Kimana, a man of earth, wish to marry the Sky Maiden, your daughter.”
NARRATOR: The Sun Chief said,
SUN CHIEF: How can this be?
NARRATOR: He went to the girls who fetched water.
SUN CHIEF: (holds out letter) Did you bring this letter?
NARRATOR: The girls said,
GIRLS: (stop working) We did not. (start working again)
NARRATOR: He went to his wife, the Moon Lady, and read it to her.
SUN CHIEF: What should we do?
NARRATOR: The Moon Lady said,
MOON LADY: Don’t ask me! Ask your daughter!
NARRATOR: He went to his daughter. The Sky Maiden said,
SKY MAIDEN: Let us see if he can bring a wedding gift.
NARRATOR: So the Sun Chief wrote a letter and set it on the bench. Then he went away.
NARRATOR: Frog came out and put the letter in his mouth. Then he climbed into an
empty jug.
NARRATOR: The next day, the girls took the jugs and climbed down to earth, singing
their song.
GIRLS: (come singing)
Good day to you, my sister.
Good day to you.
NARRATOR: They lowered their jugs into the well, and Frog jumped out.
NARRATOR: Then the girls went back to Heaven.
NARRATOR: Frog took the letter to Kimana, and Kimana read it.
KIMANA: “You may marry my daughter if you bring a purse of money.”
NARRATOR: Kimana said,
KIMANA: This I cannot do.
FROG: Then I will bring it for you.
NARRATOR: Kimana laughed.
KIMANA: (laughs) You took a letter to Heaven. But can you bring a purse of money?
FROG: Whatever it is, I can do it. But only if I try.
NARRATOR: Kimana gave Frog a purse of money. Frog took hold of it with his mouth and
carried it to the well. He climbed in and waited.
NARRATOR: The girls from Heaven came to the well.
GIRLS: (come singing)
Good day to you, my sister.
Good day to you.
NARRATOR: Frog got into one of the jugs.

FROG: I took a letter to Heaven. I brought a purse of money. I fetched a bride. Whatever it
was, I could do it. But only since I tried.
SKY MAIDEN: Then it is you I will marry!

Turtles in Trouble
Sea turtles are in danger of dying out. They are hunted for food. They are killed to
make shell and jewelry. Turtle skin is used to make leather. Turtle is used to make soap and
make up. There are laws to protect sea turtles. Not everyone obeys the laws.
Many turtles are killed by accident. Shrimp boats catch turtles in their nets. If the
turtles cannot come up for air, they will drown. Fishermen are testing new nets. The nets will
let shrimp in. They will keep turtles out.
There are fewer and fewer safe beaches where turtles can lay eggs. New homes and
hotels are being built. Baby turtles hatch at night. The city lights confuse them, so they crawl
away from the ocean. These turtles are doomed to die if they do not reach the water. Sea
turtles need our help to survive. https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/431923420490008099/
