LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH V
I. Objectives:
1. Infer meaning of unfamiliar compound words through context clues (EN5VIIIb-20.4)
2. identify, create, and determine the meaning of compound words.
3. use context clues to aide in determining the meaning of compound words

II. A. Subject Matter: Inferring Meaning of Unfamiliar compound Words


B. Materials: pictures, word cards, test papers

III. Lesson Proper


A. 1. Review on compound words: Pass out attached word cards, one per student. Instruct the students
to read their word, then move around the room to see if they can find a word to add to their word to create
a compound word that makes sense. Once a match has been made, those two students will stand together
in the room. (Check to make sure their word is correct.)
2. Have students share their word and give a definition of the word they created to the class. These
words can be displayed on a compound word wall or posted for student use during the guided practice
activities.

B. Presentation of the Lesson:


1. Guide Questions:
 What is a compound word?
 How can we use the two smaller words in a compound word to help you figure out its
meaning?
 How can we use context clues to figure out the meaning of a compound word?
2. Discussion
Introduce activity 1; If You Were a Compound Word
Example: Using the words in the review ask the children to use it in sentence using the pattern:
If we are compound word, we would be two words in one. We could take a house and a boat and
make a HOUSEBOAT. You could take a boat that rows and make it a ROWBOAT. What else could you
do if you were a compound word?

3. Activity 2.
Create an anchor chart on a piece of chart paper entitled "Compound Words." By:
 Writing the definition of a compound word: two words put together to make
one word with a new meaning.
 Then create a t-chart; title the first column "Word" and the second column
"Meaning.".
 Once the words are written in the "Word" column, model for students how to
divide the word into its two parts and use its parts to help determine the meaning
of the word, which will be added to the second column.
4. Generalization: How can we use context clues to figure out the meaning of a compound word?
5. Application

sentence. Use context clues to help you choose the best answer.
