1 Kinds of Adjectives
Adjectives are descriptive words. They are used to describe or modify other words.
There are different kinds of adjectives which can be used in describing nouns or
pronouns. Appropriate adjectives must be used to have a clearer picture of the
person, animal, thing or event being described.

What is It

Study the following:

I dreamt of living in a peaceful community.

Filipino values are peculiar.

In the given example peaceful and Filipino are used as adjectives in the sentences.
They are used to describe nouns. The nouns are the modified words.

Proper nouns, derived words, and compound nouns may be used as adjectives.
Example A:

Australian player Asian food Italian cuisine

From the example A, the adjectives are considered as proper adjectives. They
come from proper nouns. They start with a capital letter.
Examples:

James is an Australian player.

Sushi is one of the famous Asian food.

His specialty is cooking Italian cuisine.

Derived Adjectives are formed when adjective-forming suffixes are added to


common nouns or verbs. These words are derived from nouns, and verbs.

Here are some of the suffixes used to form a derived adjective:

-ous/-
-able/-ible -al -ful -less
eous/ious

Compound Adjectives are formed when two or more adjectives are joined together
to modify, or describe the same noun. Using a hyphen will help avoid confusion.

Examples:

Snakes are considered cold-blooded animals.

The 38-year-old football player retired.
