Welcome to the English Grade 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module Direct
and Reported Speech.

1 Direct and Reported Speech

Every day in our lives, we use direct and reported speech. Being able to
determine or comprehend the difference between the two is very important for
effective communication.

Yes, you’re right! They are called direct and reported speech.
We will learn more of their differences and how to use them as we move on to the
different activities of this module.

Read the Dialog below and answer the questions that follow.

A Helping Hand

While on a water break during their physical education class, Rosalyn and
Ramon, both from grade six section Rizal chanced upon each other at the water
fountain of their school.

Rosalyn: “Hello Ramon. You seem to be staying in the


course of your preparation for the coming district
level athletic meet now that you skip our class to
focus on your practices. You are going the extra
mile in your taekwondo training lately since you are
practicing overtime.”
Ramon: “Hi Rosalyn, is it that obvious? Indeed, I
have been dedicating blood, sweat and tears just to
keep myself in shape for the competition. We want
our team to maintain its standing based on last
year’s performance.”

Rosalyn: “It is obvious because you lost so much weight. I can still remember
when we sent you off to your competition last year and pushed you to
bring home the bacon. Thank God you really did because you were
champions that time.”

Ramon: “We are actually thankful for your well-wishes, it encourages us to pull
out all the stopsto condition ourselves physically and to do our very best
during the competition.”

Rosalyn: “I also hope that you don’t bite off more than you can chew in the
course of your training. If you train too hard, it might affect your health
and even your studies.”

Ramon: “That’s exactly where I need you Rosalyn, please help me catch up with
the lessons I missed.”

Rosalyn: “No problem, I can always lend you a helping hand so you can cope
with the lessons that you missed. What are friends for.”

Ramon: “Thanks Rosalyn, I know I can count onyou for help. You are one of my
most reliable friends, thank you so much. See you around, I have to go
back to my practice now, bye.”

Rosalyn: “Bye Ramon,break a leg. Good luck to your whole team.”

How do you find the dialog? Do you notice the quotation marks whenever the
character speaks? You’re right! Quotation marks are used in direct speech. Now, let
us try if you can change sentences from direct speech to reported speech and vice-
versa.

DIRECTIONS: The sentences below are taken from the dialog that you have just
read. Change these sentences from direct speech to reported speech. The first one
is done for you.

1. “You are going the extra mile in your taekwondo training lately,” said
Rosalyn.
Answer: Rosalyn said that he was going extra mile in his taekwondo training
lately.

2. Ramon replied, “We want our team to maintain its standing based on last
year’s performance.”

What is It

There are two ways of reporting the statement that someone has said, these are
the direct and reported speech (or indirect speech).

Direct speech consists of words or phrases that are taken directly from the
source. In other words, we take the words directly from the speaker and repeat
them exactly as they were originally stated. This also uses quotation marks or
inverted commas (“ ”).

Here are some examples of direct speech:


o Jonah said, “I don’t like his hat.”
o “I will see what I can do,” replied Sam.
o “The students are studying their lesson,” said the teacher.

On the other hand, reported speech or indirect speech is when words or


phrases are reported in our own words. The original words are modified and/or
interpreted as opposed to being quoted. When talking about reported or indirect
speech, we use words that refer to something that has already happened. To do so,
we are speaking in the past tense and are summarizing, modifying, or synthesizing
what has already been said.
Here are some examples of indirect speech:

o Jonah said that he didn’t like his hat.


o Sam replied that she would see what she could do.
o The teacher said that the students were studying their lessons.

However, there are rules to follow if you want to change sentences from direct
speech to reported speech, here are the rules that you need to familiarize:

Rule No. 1 Words of the speaker are not enclosed in inverted commas or quotation
marks in reported speech.
Example:

Maria said that she preferred flowers than chocolates.

Rule No. 2Usage of the word “that”: The conjunction “that” is always used
between reporting verb and reported speech in indirect speech.

Example:

Direct Speech: He said, “I write a letter.”


Reporting Verb: The verb
Reported Speech: He said that he wrote a letter. of the first sentence (i.e
she said, he said, she says,

words of the speaker is

speech.

Rule No. 3Change in tense of the reported speech: A change is made in tense of
reported speech for changing a direct speech into indirect speech.
If the reporting verb (or first sentence) of direct speech is either Present Tense or
Future Tense, no change will be made in the reported speech for making reported
speech. This may also refer to factual sentences.

Example:

• In the sentence below, the reported verb “says” is in the present tense,
since it is in the present tense, there will be no changes in the reported
speech.

Direct Speech: He says, “I am playing cricket.”

Reported Speech: He says that he is playing cricket. (No change in tense)

Next, if the reporting verb (or first sentence) of direct speech belongs to the Past
Tense, changes will be made in tense reported speech for making indirect speech.

Let’s have the discussion for the changes in tense:

A. Direct Speech: Lara said, (I work in Davao City hall.”)

As mentioned in the rule, the reporting verb “said” is in past tense so you have
to change the verb (work) in the reported speech. If the verb is in the present
tense, you have to change it to past tense. The verb “work” will now be
changed to “worked”

Simple Present Tense to Simple present tense

Present Tense

A. Direct Speech: Lara says, (I work in Davao City hall.”)

B. Reported Speech: She says that she works in Davao City hall.

As mentioned in the rule, the reporting verb “says” is in present tense so there
is no need to change the verb (work) in the reported speech.

Rule No. 4 Changes in Pronoun: The pronoun (or subject) of reported speech is
sometimes changed according to the pronoun (or subject) or Object of the reported
verb (first sentence of Direct Speech). The possessive pronouns (i.e. his, her, my,
their, your, etc.) may also change according to the subject or object of the first
sentence.

Examples:

Direct Speech: He said, “I eat two apples.”


Reported Speech: He said that he ate two apples.

Direct Speech: She said to me, “I like your book.”

Reported Speech: She said to me that she liked my book.

Rule 4.1

First person pronoun in direct speech (i.e. I, we) is changed according to the
pronoun of reporting verb if pronoun in reporting verb is third person pronoun
(i.e. he, she)

For example:

Direct speech: He said, “I don’t want to shock people”


Reported speech: He said that he didn’t want to shock people.

Direct speech: They said, “we‘ll look after Liam.”

Reported speech: They said that they would look after Liam.

Rule 4.2

First person pronoun in direct speech (i.e. I, we) is not changed if the pronoun
(Subject) of reporting is also first person pronoun (i.e. I or we).

For example:

Direct speech: I said, “I do my homework.”


Reported speech: I said that I did my homework.

Direct speech: We said, “we buy our clothes.”

Reported speech: We said that we bought our clothes.


Rule 4.3

Second person pronoun in direct speech (i.e. you) is changed according to “object”
of reporting verb.
For example:

Direct speech: He said to her, “you are cute.”


Reported speech: He said to her that she was cute.
Direct speech: He said to me, “you are a generous person.“
Reported speech: He said to me that I was a generous person.

Rule 4.4
Third person pronoun in direct speech (i.e. he, she, it) is not changed in indirect
speech.
Examples:
Direct speech: They said, “She does not have the necessary qualifications. “

Reported speech: They said that she did not have the necessary qualifications.

Direct speech: She said, “It is raining.”


Reported speech: She said that it was raining.

Rule No. 5 Change in Time: If there is time mentioned in the sentence of Direct
Speech, the time will be changed in the Reported Speech. There are certain rules
changing the time, i.e. now into then, tomorrow into the next day, today into that
day, yesterday into the previous day.
Examples:

Direct Speech: She said, “I am buying a laptop today.”

Reported Speech: She said that she was buying a laptop that day.
Direct Speech: He said, “I need your help now.”

Reported Speech: He said that he needed my help then.

was moving at the time of the collision. My
