MODULE 5: ELEMENTS OF ARTS: Auditory Art

5 : ELEMENTS OF ARTS:
AUDITORY ART

INTRODUCTION

Hi, Welcome to Module 5!

Are you ready for another lesson? Okay, let us get started!

In this module, we will continue to discuss and identify how an artist employs sound
qualities in creating a work of art. These sound qualities are known as elements of art or
design. The elements of arts that we will discuss in this module is all about the auditory art.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

 Define elements of art,

 Identify the elements of auditory art,
 Explain the importance of the elements in creating artworks; and,
 Analyze how the elements of art are employed in an artwork.

Now, let us properly begin our discussion on the continuation of The Elements of Arts!

MODULE 5: ELEMENTS OF ARTS: Auditory Art

Module 5: ELEMENTS OF ARTS: Value, Texture, & Space

Since this is a continuation for the Elements of Virtual Arts, we shall start the numeration with
number 7, considering Module Three and Four has already discussed the first six elements.

7. AUDITORY ART
Auditory art is the art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous,
unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. It is
either a vocal or instrumental sounds possessing a degree of melody, harmony, and rhythm;
and the medium of all auditory art forms is sound.
It is also known as Timed Arts. Unlike the existence of paintings and sculptures, the
existence of musical sounds is
intermittent and in this group there
are no real objects or physical
objects that can be viewed and or
touched. In what sense, then, does
the music exist between
performances? It exists only in the
sense that it is reproducible from
the written score.

7.1 Categories of Auditory Art

7.1.1 Music
Music is composed of tones and silences organized in such a manner to convey the
emotions and ideas conceived by the composer. The composers work must be interpreted by
another artist – the performer – who makes the composers work come to life.
It is an artful arrangement of sounds across time. Music is part of virtually every culture
on earth, but it varies widely among cultures in style and structure. Music is called temporal
because it moves through time.

7.1.2 Functions of Music

Music is an important ingredient in our daily lives. Its value depends on our purposes,
whether for celebrations, rituals, rites, and/or special occasions. The following, inter alia, are
the functions of music:
 Attempts to imitate nature sounds;
 Release of one’s emotions or feelings;
 Signals in wars;
 Means of worship and ritual; and
 Form of entertainment.

7.1.3 Elements of Music

 Rhythm
Rhythm is often associated with the terms beat, meter, and
tempo.

Beat is the basic unit of music (e.g. the national anthem

Lupang Hinirang could be sung in 2/4 time signature and 4/4
time signature, wherein the latter has 4 beats in each measure
and the quarter note which is 4 receives one beat).

Tempo, on the other hand, refers to its speed. Which means how many beats per
second that can be recognized into a recognizable recurrent pattern which brings us to Meter.
Classical terms are used in the variations in tempo. Some of which are the following:
 Largo – slowly and broadly or it is unheard and it portrays a grand manner or
a dignified performance or sound;
 Andante – walking pace or sounds like marching;
 Moderato – at moderate speed or its beats per second is in average amount or
time;
 Allegro – fast variation of tempo or the opposite of Moderato;
 Vivace – lively or it has a lively tempo that has 140 beats per minute;
 Accelerando – gradually speeding up or one which goes from slow to fast. An
example would be singing a “happy birthday” slowly then going fast;
 Rallentado/Ritardando – gradually slowing down.
 Allargando – getting slower, broadening. Which means going slower yet louder;
 Rubato – can be called as “robbed time” or rhythm is played freely for
expressive effect. It is a give and take in the timing of music;
 Crescendo – increase in loudness; and
 Decrescendo /Diminuendo – decrease in loudness.

 Dynamics
Dynamics adds beauty in a musical performance or in a
song. This element refers to the loudness or quietness of music.
The following are the classical terms that are used to refer the
different levels pertaining to dynamics:
 Pianissimo [pp] – very quiet or has a soft sound;
 Piano [p] – quiet or has very soft sound;
 Mezzo-piano [mp] – moderately quiet or it moves
one eve louder than the piano;
 Mezzo-forte [mf] – moderately loud or could constitute as your speaking
voice when having a normal conversation;
 Forte [f] – loud or sudden, forced loud; and
 Fortissimo [ff] – very loud.

 Melody
We might consider melody to be the single most important element within a song. In
everyday language, this is the element we call “the tune.” Melody refers to the linear

presentation of pitch. In which the latter refers to the

highness or lowness of music sound. By horizontal, melody
means that in musical notation it is read in succession from
left to right.

 Harmony
Harmony is the verticalization of pitch. It arises when
pitches are combined to form chords (several notes played
simultaneously as a “block”). Wherein these chords are usually
arranged into sentence-like patterns called chord progressions.
Harmony can be described based on its harshness, wherein it is
Dissonance if the harmony has a harsh sounding combination,
and it’s opposite is Consonance or when the harmony has a
smooth sounding combination.

 Timbre
Timbre is often likened to the colours of music. It is
a quality that distinguishes a voice or an instrument
from another. Dependent on the technique, the timbre
may give a certain tone or characteristic to music.
Much like how a painter evokes different effects or
impressions unto the canvass. It is often characterized
as the quality of your voice or the quality of the musical
instrument used.

 Texture
Texture is one of the basic elements of music. It refers to
the relationship of melodic and harmonic elements with
each other. Wherein it may be monophonic (a single melodic
line) or polyphonic (two or more melodic lines) or homophonic
(the main melody is accompanied by chords).

7.2 Literature
Literature as a category of auditory art refers to the sound values in poetry,
particularly when read aloud; but as sound alone, literature would be the most poverty-
stricken of arts.
Listening to the sounds of a poem or play uttered
in an unfamiliar language gives some idea of the
importance in literature of knowing the meanings of the
words

7.2.1 Poetry
Poetry is a special form of writing that allows a student to express ideas, emotions, or
experiences directly through words in verse. It is probably the most artistic of all genres of
writing because of the delicate juggling act of rhythm, sound devices and subject matter.

The sounds of the words in a line of poetry make a rhythm that is similar to the rhythm
in music. This rhythm is established by stressed and unstressed syllables. The pattern of stressed
and unstressed syllables in a poem is called meter. It’s important to pay attention to rhythm
because it is the key to understanding the full effect of a poem.
Some poets use sound devices as a strategy to create an emotional response by the
listener. Sound devices are special tools that poet can use to create certain effects in the poem
to convey and reinforce meaning through sound. The following, inter alia, are the most
common sound devices:

 Repetition – the repeating of any words, phrases, sentences, or lines within a poem;
 Rhyme – the matching vowel sounds at the end of words or lines (e.g. me, see/long
“e” sounds);
 Alliteration – the repetition of the consonant sounds at the beginning of words (e.g.
five feathered pheasants [f sounds]); and
 Assonance – repetition of vowel sounds within words (e.g. long, low moan [o sounds]).

Subject Matter for any form of poetry writing is limitless. Subject matter is the topic that
is being written about and serves as the foundation for the text.

MODULE 5: ELEMENTS OF ARTS: Auditory Art

SUMMARY
Similar to artwork, auditory art has the same medium and technique to emphasize
some of the elements of visual arts. A composition and genre of music may also emphasize
the elements of music outlined in the succeeding. Some elements may be de-emphasized or
omitted altogether. These elements may be isolated from each other, however, as a visual or
musical compositions, the combination of these elements in art is what we initially engage
with. Most often, elements does not only coexist in the artwork but are fused together or
overlapped with each other. In visual arts, most artworks have overlapping element.
