Topic 2: Six forms of Love
Robert Sternberg
An American psychologist and psychometrician known for
his theories on love, intelligence, and creativity.
He is Professor of Human Development at Cornell
University.
In 1986, he stated that love is made out of three
components.
Triangular theory of love
The triangular theory of love holds that love
can be understood in terms of three
components that together can be viewed as
forming the vertices of a triangle. The
triangle is used as a metaphor, rather than as
a strict geometric model. These three
components are intimacy, passion, and
decision/commitment.
Three Components of Love
INTIMACY
PASSION COMMITMENT
Intimacy
refers to feelings of closeness,
connectedness, and bondedness in loving
relationships.
Passion
refers to the drives that lead to romance,
physical attraction, sexual consummation,
and related phenomena in loving
relationships.
Commitment
to the decision that one loves a certain other,
and in the long-term, to one's commitment to
maintain that love.

components.
P C
LIKING/FRIENDSHIP
I Set of feelings one experiences without
the feeling of passion or commitment
in the romantic.
P C
INFATUATION
I The most common root of romantic
love, as it is believe that intimacy
develops over time.
P C
EMPTY LOVE
I Characterize by the absence of
passion and intimacy despite the
presence of commitment.
P C
ROMANTIC LOVE
I Lovers who are under this category
are said to not only be drawn and
bonded physically, but emotionally.
P C
COMPANIONATE LOVE
I This is stronger than the friendship
form because of the element of
commitment. It can be observed in
long-term marriages.
P C
FATUOUS LOVE
I It's the type of whirlwind romances
that end up in our television sets.
P C
CONSUMATE LOVE
I This type of love sits at the very center
of the triangle, because this is said to
be the perfect and ideal type of love.
