Topshop are planning for their annual Box Day Sale and need to calculate the sale prices of their clothes.

Using The Percentage Multiplier method, calculate the sale price of these items.

what was its price prior to the sale?

Example
The normal price of a television is reduced by 30% in a sale.
The sale price of the television is £350. Work out the
normal price of the television.

What makes this problem different?


We’re trying to find the value before the percentage change.

We know that we could reduce something by …We could therefore


30% by multiplying it by 0.7. This gives us a retrieve the original value
new value of £350. by dividing by 0.7.
REVERSE PERCENTAGES

• Q1 FIND THE ORIGINAL AMOUNT WHEN THE NEW VALUE, AFTER A 30%
INCREASE, IS £195.
• USING MULTIPLIER
• NEW = ORIGINAL X MULTIPLIER
• £195 = ORIGINAL X 1.30
• ORIGINAL = £195 ÷ 1.30
• ORIGINAL = £150
