CHAP TER 2 TEMPO

Hi guys. Back again with yet another chapter. Ive received feedback that the positive and negative space strategy was used to good effect against chai chee and also at the same time honed our possession skills. Im glad and hopefully its not a one off thing.

Today, im going to discuss about another strategy called tempo. Before we move into further discussion, id like to mention that tempo CANNOT be used on its own as a strategy but rather as a combination with another strategy. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that we do not forget what we discussed in chapter 1 because tempo can co-relate with possession and space.

Again as usual, if you do have any questions or need further explanation on this chapter, please feel free to comment or message me and i will be more than happy to help you.

Ok..listen up!

WHAT IS TEMPO?

Tempo is the speed of which the team plays football. It can be also considered as the rate of ball movement in various areas of the pitch and also used in comparisons between attack and defence. Simply to put it, it is the speed of which a match is played.

Usually, South American , Spanish and English football have made a high tempo game their forte. In the la liga and epl matches, its very difficult to see a team play at a slow tempo. Italians, and Italian football have been known to use the slow tempo to their advantage and that is why when these to styles lock horns, it will always end us as a footballing encounter to remember.

Players who are used to dictate tempo are those who have a broad view of the pitch and are also excellent game readers. Mostly centre-midfielders are used to dictate but a few defenders also possess the qualities needed. Examples of players who excel at dictating tempo would be xabi Alonso, iniesta, paul scholes. As you already know, there are 2 types of tempo. High and Low. Im going to explain both and relate them to kamikaze football so that we can get a clearer picture when we incorporate this style into our football.

HIGH TEMPO: In high tempo games, you would often need/require a set of characteristics to make it work such as: - Stamina - Communication - Urgency - High rate of player movement (as in teammates are always on the move)

When we pass the ball around fast and maintain possession, it does not mean we are playing to a high tempo. Always remember that, if you keep passing and your opponent dosent get affected in any way, youre just tiring yourself out. Instead, passing and moving the ball up and down the pitch, mainly in the offensive third will create greater effect for high tempo style as it unsettles and disorganises the strongest of defences. Strong dribblers, playmakers, speedy wingers are essential to accommodate this style of play.

High tempo style yields the best results when used in the following scenarios: - Chasing an equaliser/match winning goal - If opponents are parking the bus type of team - At the start of second half. I say this because kkz often gets hit very early in the 2nd half inexplicably and we usually start slow even if we are leading. - Counter attack

LOW TEMPO:

Low tempo, although opposite of high tempo often gets mistaken to be compared with boring football. Its not true in any case. Low tempo football has its own advantages. But before that, you also need to have a few characteristics that is:

- Composure on the ball - Ability to withstand pressure from opponents attacks - Patience and discipline - High rate of player movement (as in teammates are always on the move)

Composure is the main key ingredient in low tempo football because when you play low tempo football, the opponents will come and close you/try to dispossess you because they want to have the ball to attack. You have to be composed to keep knocking the ball around.

Low tempo football yields best results when used in the following scenarios: - Preserving a lead till game end - Slowing down the pace when opponents attacks become more frequent - Just after playing high tempo, as players will be tired and need to regain stamina

WHY TEMPO?

The reason why tempo is involved more than people understand is that it can be a vital move in winning a game. Lets say if we play against a super fast team who boast speed in all positions. If we also play high tempo football against them, they will definitely beat us in the speed department and it will look like they are bombarding us with attacks sooner or rather. We will also see lesser of the ball and we will try to launch an attack the moment we get the ball, thus losing out and tiring ourselves in the process. If we play a team who park the bus and we play low tempo, well never be able to break them down because they will not feel threatened.

Tempo should be regulated and used according to how the game is flowing. No team in the world can play to high tempo or low tempo only for the 90 mins. They will have to regulate and thats what we have to do. Using your energy at the precise moment can do lots of damage than compared to using your energy unnecessarily and not having it when u need it.

Next im going to discuss a case study. An actual game played by kamikaze. Please try your best to remember the game.

Case study 1: KKZ VS SS. St wilfrid. Final score 2-2. The game started off with us having 13 players only. Which means 2 subs. This was a team we beat 6-2 in the first leg. As the match kicked off, complacency crept in and we decided to play a relaxed game with them. Before we know it, we were 2-0 down and on the brink of facing our first defeat of the year. After that, they increased their midfield to 5 players and decided to hold out the game. We were playing at a high tempo the whole game and tired out easily. We somehow managed to slot 2 goals in and uspo had a goal disallowed before the game ended. Our mistake was to allow complacency to kick in. Secondly, we were hell bent on equalising the game when it was 1-0 that we ran unnecessarily. They took advantage and scored another 1 more. We should have approached the game with a high tempo, score 1 or 2 goals and hold out the game for a while, let them attack and then tire them out. After that, we should have switched to high tempo again and killed the game off easily. Lesson to learn. Never chase a goal. Use different styles /strategies to attack the opponents style of play. The goal will come naturally.
