Teachers will once again be in their classrooms and invite you to join them and you child to discuss the progress that has been made this year. Students will also share their goals for the spring. Conferences are limited to 15 minutes a piece

South Canton Scholars, teachers are working hard to ensure that all students are college ready by the time they leave the eighth grade. This means that teachers work with students to provide rigorous assignments, assessments, and projects. Rigor occurs when a teacher works hard to create an environment in which each student is expected to learn at high levels.

Teachers take NWEA Test too!


This week, all of the 6th grade teachers took the NWEA tests in order to better prepare their students for the future. Teachers were able to finally see what their students see during the test. They were challenged, frustrated, and definitely worked on persevering to get through the entire test.

Letters of Courage
This week students have been working on writing letters to the most couragous person they know. Students have been going through thw writing process for this letter and will publish it next week.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS


Vocabulary and Spelling This week marks Week 8 in the Wordly Wise series. Students are starting to make connections between subjects by using their newly acquired words on a regular basis. Please encourage your student to start using these words on a daily basis in the proper context. Students have also stared to analyze the meanings of their weekly words through synonyms and antonyms. Grammar Adjectives Bringing Color, numbers, and descriptions to all types of writing! Students were introduced to adjectives this week and will more to adverbs next week. Writing MLA note cards are coming along nicely. Please see www.MLA.org if you need any clarification for the information that is to be presented on each card. Students can have more than ten! ReadingMark Ups! Students used Mark Ups this week to analyze historical passages based on famous African Americans and events.

Celebrating Valentines Day


On February 14th classes will be taking one half hour out of their schedules to celebrate Valentines Day. Students are allowed to bring in valentine cards store bought or homemadefor ALL of their classmates. If a student decides to participate they must have a valentine for each student in their homeroom class.
Students can also bring in treats for their homeroom class. There must be enough for everyone and should try to be healthy. There will be a flyer next week with name lists and snack suggestions.

Next week, our math rotations will continue to make progress towards our goals. Rotation 1 will multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers. Rotation 2 will graph linear equations and find ratios for real life scenarios. Rotation 3 will be working on rate of change and slope. The assignments will be posted on the website next week.

Each teacher has a collection box in their classroom for Box Top labels. There is a new competition for tops from now until February 17th and the classroom that brings in the most will earn a pizza party. Thank you to all of the families who have already taken the time to cut the box tops. We appreciate your support and time!

grade went on a field trip this week to the Mono Lake. They studied its organisms, limiting factors, biotic and abiotic factors, and worked hard to differentiate the between the four levels of an ecosystem. They will continue their field trip next week as they start to analyze symbiotic relationships within different ecosystems.
