Topic: La familia
Sub-topic: Family members
Objectives : Students will write a dialogue to introduce family members with the aid of a
vocabulary chart.
Concept: gender of nouns, interrogatives, sentence structure.

¡Hola! How many people are in your family? Do you have sisters? What is the name of your
cousin? You will learn new Spanish vocabulary on family members in this lesson. You will also be
able to ask and answer questions about your family.
Read the following dialogue.

Read the dialogue carefully. Do you recognize any familiar words? Take a look at the vocabulary
chart. You will be able to write sentences and communicate effectively when you memorize the
new vocabulary in each lesson.

Marta : He is my brother, miss.
Teacher: He is your brother? What is his name?
Marta: His name is Paco.

Remember: ‘Es’ is used for he/she/it is.

★ IDENTIFYING FAMILY MEMBERS

Here are some words that you will use to identify members of the family:

La abuela - grandmother
El abuelo - grandfather
El esposo - husband
La esposa - wife
La familia - family
El hermano - brother
La hermana - sister
El primo - cousin(male)
La prima - cousin (female)
El padre - father
La madre - mother
El hijo - son
La hija - daughter

● What do you notice about the family members?


There is a la/el before each member. In Spanish, nouns are classified as masculine (used the
articles el and un) or feminine (used with the articles la and una).

★ INTRODUCING FAMILY MEMBERS

You can use “este es / esta es” (This is) to introduce your family members. Este es is used for
masculine nouns and esta es is used for feminine nouns.

Esta es mi madre. Se llama Silvia. This is my mother. Her name is Silvia.

Este es mi padre se llama Juan. This is my father. His name is Juan.

Este es mi hermano. Se llama Rickey. This is my brother. His name is
Rickey.

Teacher (male): Good afternoon, Silvia.


Silvia: Good afternoon, Sir Alvarez. How are you?
Teacher: I am very good, thank you. And you?
Silvia: I am very good, thank you.

Silvia: She is my sister, Miss.
Teacher: She is your sister? What is her name?
Silvia: Her name is Paloma.

(There are five people in my family. My mother, my father, my younger brother and me.

Practice saying how many people are in your family.

Note: You use ‘menor’ to identify your younger sibling and ‘mayor’ for your older sibling.
