The Hunchback of Notre Dame Main characters - Quasimodo is the protagonist of the story who is called the hunchback

of Notre Dame. He lives in the bell tower of Notre Dame, a cathedral in Paris and his job is to ring the bells, which have made him deaf. As a baby, he was left near the cathedral and the citizens of Paris were very afraid of him because of his deformed appearance. He was adopted by Claude Frollo. - Esmeralda is a beautiful, kind young Gypsy dancer. She is loved by both Quasimodo and Pierre Gringoire. - Claude Frollo is the Archdeacon of Notre Dame. - Pierre Gringoire is a poet and he is the narrator of the story. - Djali is Esmeralda's pet goat. Plot The story takes place in Paris, France, in the 15 century. The story begins on the day of the 'Festival of Fools' in Paris. The citizens of Paris chose their "King of Fools" - the ugliest person who took part in the contest. The chosen king was Quasimodo the hunchback. On that day, there were many celebrations, and some people watched Esmeralda dancing. The archdeacon Claude Frollo blamed Esmeralda of being a witch. He said that her goat Djali had close connections with the devil that helped her with her evil magic. Esmeralda left the place and Pierre Gringoire, who fell in love with her, went to search for her. When he found her, he realized that Quasimodo was trying to kidnap her obeying the order of his adoptive father, the archdeacon Claude Frollo. Pierre tried to save her but he did not succeed, and eventually she was saved by the king's servants. Pierre was taken by the beggars of Paris to their place, the chamber of the Paris's unwanted. The king of the beggars gave an order to kill him, but then they gave him a chance to live if one of their women married him. Esmeralda agreed to marry him and he was saved. Meanwhile, Quasimodo was judged for trying to steal a woman and his punishment was 25 whippings. He got the punishment in public and everyone laughed at him. When he was thirsty, Esmeralda was the only one who was kind to him and brought him some water. He really felt sorry for trying to kidnap her although it was his father who ordered him to do it. Quasimodo fell in love with Esmeralda. When the archdeacon Claude Frollo had enough evidence against the innocent Esmeralda, she was sentenced to be hanged. Quasimodo saved her in the last minute and she had to hide in his room at the cathedral. Due to her presence, Quasimodo did not fell so lonely and unwanted anymore. A week later, the beggars came to save Esmeralda. Quasimodo had no way of knowing that the beggars had actually come to save her, so he struggled them and beat them. Pierre, who was Esmeralda's husband and among the beggars, got into the cathedral trying to save her .While Quasimodo was fighting against the beggars, he couldnt protest Esmeralda and as a result Claude Frollo, could get her. He took her to the roof and hanged her. When Quasimodo and Pierre got to the roof, it was too late.

The woman they both loved was dead. In complete madness, Quasimodo jumped into the air right on the archdeacon and they both feel off the roof right into the street. At the end of the story, Esmeralda and Quasimodo were buried in the crypts beneath Notre Dame. Buried together, side by side the monster and the woman he loved so much.
