Project Title: Smart Room

Synopsis:-

With the advancement of technology, things are becoming simpler and easier to us. In the scope of industrialization, automation is a step beyond mechanization. Earlier, looking into the face of future, our ancestors talked about automated devices, which could do anything on instigation of a controller, but today it has become a reality. The concept of Smart Room is synonymous with the idea of Room Power Automation. As the number of controllable devices in the home rises, interconnection and communication becomes a useful and desirable feature. Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, appliances, and other systems to provide improved convenience, comfort and energy efficiency. Many a time we forget to switch off appliances like lights, fans before leaving our house. This leads to considerable wastage of electricity apart from reducing the life of the appliance. In terms of Lighting Room Automation, it is possible to save energy when installing various products. For the Room Power Automation we are incorporating some techniques which could make this possible. Aforesaid objective can be accomplished by using1. Unidirectional visitor counter : Visitor counting is simply a measurement of the visitor traffic entering and exiting offices, malls, sports venues, etc. With the help of this device the number of persons entering and leaving the room will be counted. We can use this phenomenon to maximize the efficiency of electrical appliances by using them judiciously. With the help of this counter by examining the number of persons in the room, the power to the appliances will be controlled accordingly. When the numbers in the memory of visitor counter are equal, the circuit assumes that there is nobody in the room, so electrical devices will be shut down automatically. As long as numbers differ, the power remains ON. IR sensor are fitted on one pillar (left or right) of the door such that one IR sensor is inside the door and other outside the door. Two diodes are fitted on the opposite pillars of the door- one inside and other outside, such that the light from the laser diode falls directly on the IR sensor placed on that side. The IR sensors

are housed in suitable cabinets to protect from ambient lights. 2. Remote Control for Home Appliances: As the name suggests, it deals with the controlling of an appliance from some distance. So, we are using REMOTE CONTROL as a mechanism to control the power supply given to a particular appliance. Remote control works on the phenomenon of frequency matching. For the same, Line of sight, Light radiation and destination device is needed. Since, here it is IR remote control, so the range of light belonging to infrared region will be used here. The appliances can be controlled using TV/VCD/DVD remote. There will be a receiver placed in the room at the location where the TV remote can detect desired frequency. For the completion of this communication, the transmitter is TV remote and the receiver will be attached to appliances. For the receiver, concept of relay is to be utilized. The line of sight must be in the direction of receiver. An automated room can be a very simple grouping of controls or it can be heavily automated where any appliance that is plugged into electrical power is remotely controlled. An automated device can replace good amount of human working force, moreover humans are more prone to errors and in intensive conditions the probability of error increases whereas an automated device can work with diligence, versatility and with almost zero error. Automation replaces human operators in task that involves physical or monotonous works. Automation replaces humans in tasks done in dangerous environments (i.e. fire, space, volcanoes, nuclear facilities and underwater). Automation performs tasks that are beyond human capabilities of size, weight, endurances etc. Automation may improve in economy of enterprises, society or most of human kinds. It gives us flexibility of utilization and energy efficiency. Automatic lightning control systems can be used as follows: Automatically extinguish the lights in a room after occupants have left. Automatically turn on the lights if occupants enter a room. Turn the light on or off with the use of a remote wireless device. It is cost-effective, so people from every strata of society can use it without much burdening their pockets. It is also energy saving device and flexible in operation which makes it almost inevitable. This could well be used in schools, banks, auditoriums and in every type of closed areas.

Future will be of automation of all products. Each and every product will be smart devices that we use daily and that can be controlled through smart chips known as microcontrollers. The ability to control lightening and appliances demand response, real-time power usage will become need of hour. It introduces the concept of hassle free in devices, in mechanization there can be human error but by using automation technique we can overcome any possible errors. So it is highly efficient, selective, and accurate. If we keep wasting electricity like it is being wasted now, it would be difficult even for upper strata of society to manage some basic necessities (light, fan, refrigerator etc) for them in future. So this project will help us all to control our wastage of electricity either directly or indirectly, either intentionally (government properties) or unintentionally. Simple functions such as motion sensors and detectors integrated into a relatively simple home automation system can save hours of wasted energy in both residential and commercial applications. For example imagine an auto on/off at night time in all major city office blocks, say after 10pm, when no motion is detected, lights shut down, the company could save kilowatts of wasted over night energy. Besides the upcoming standardization of home automation hardware, there is also the issue of the control software. In older systems (and some contemporary ones), the control of each home automation system needed to be done separately, and there was thus no central control system. This sometimes leads to a great amount of remote controls, one being needed to control each individual part of the system. However, with the new generation of home automation systems, central control can be foreseen. This project would decide the standard of living of people after 20 or 30 years.
