Class – XII (Mathematics)

Assignment-Maxima & Minima

Q1 A rectangle is inscribed in a semicircle of radius 4 cm with one of its side on the diameter of
the semi-circle. Find the dimensions of rectangle of the semi – circle. Find the dimensions
of rectangle so that its area is maximum. Find also this area.

Q2 Prove that a conical tent of a given capacity will require the least amount of canvas when the
height is √2 times the radius of the base.

Q3 A square tank of capacity 250 m3 has to be dug out. The cost of land is Rs 50 per square
meter. The cost of digging increases with the depth and far the whole tank is Rs 400 x h 2,
where h is the depth of tank. What should be the dimensions of the tank so that its cost is
minimum.

Q4 Show that the volume of the greatest cylinder which can be inscribed in a cone of height h
4
and semi vertical angle 𝛼 𝑖𝑠 𝜋ℎ3 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝛼.

Q5 Find the coordinates on the point of the parabola y = x2 +7x + 2 which is nearest to the
straight line y = 3x – 3.

Q6 Show that the normal at any point Q to the curve x = a cos 𝜃 + a 𝜃sin 𝜃 and y = a sin 𝜃 – a
𝜃cos 𝜃 is at a constant distance from the origin.

Q7 A cylindrical container with a capacity of 20 cubic metres is to be produced. The top and
bottom of the container are to be made of material that cost Rs 6 per square metre while the
sides of container is made of material costing Rs 3 per square metre. Find the dimensions
that will minimize the total cost.

Q8 A given quantity of gold is to be cost in to a solid half cylinder. (i.e with rectangular base
semi- circular ends) show that in order that the total surface area may be minimum, the ratio
of the length of the cylinder to the diameter of its circular ends is 𝜋 (𝜋 + 2). What steps
should be taken by the Government to stop smuggling of gold?

Q9 If the sum of lengths of hypotenuse and a side of a right triangle is given show that the
𝜋
area of the triangle is maximum when angle between them is .

Q10 A point on the hypotenuse of a right triangle is at distance a and b from the sides of triangle.
Show that the minimum length of the hypotenuse is (a2/3 + b2/3)3/2.
