Celebration of the Celtic year

Celebration of the Celtic year is a familiar experience as for some years I have participated in communal, ceremonial and solitary honoring of this time. In my community it is celebrated with a festival, people dress up, art exhibitions are held, a parade down the main street takes place honoring and promoting diverse issues of concern to the community, concerts and choirs abound and there is a general air of festivity and happiness as friends greet each other with "Happy Winter Magic!" This year a friend mentioned an event that was to be held in Scotland a week after our winter magic festival. She described it as a fire labyrinth ritual in which a stone labyrinth would be lit at night to be walked with conscious intent and so mark the end of the year and begin a new one, a shedding of the old and birthing of the divine child. This event was an informal affair; no structured ritual here, just a leading to the stones when adequately dark, a mention of the solstice, and then drenching of the rags around the stones with kero. Three people were the torchbearers who lit the labyrinth in different parts. The wooden arched entrance was also set ablaze. My friend entered first and I soon after, with little flame flapping on either side of a narrow path, we started. In my mind I buckled down, determined to get through for the fear of being burnt was raging now and it felt like the fire was saying "We meet again Charles Lightwalker An affirmation came to mind quickly "we must walk our path with deliberation and care" as I became aware of how narrow our path in life is, how easy to drop off one side or the other, to be deflected. And I then felt how fragile is life on this planet with extinction awaiting either side of what the cosmologist Brian Swimme calls the "space-time curve". We reached the center quite quickly and I felt the need to touch the stone placed there. Instead of an ending, that became the beginning to this circular journey. I had not seen the labyrinth in daylight so had no sense of how big it was a how long it might take I just focused on putting one foot in front of the

other. Though the flames never lost their power for me, I started to feel the presence of my guides and their hands on my shouldersI was not going to burn or even be singed! I would survive this and through facing the fire would be released even more from its thrall. As we walked in silence and the journey became more familiar, I was able on occasion to shift my gaze to the stars. At the beginning of the evening in the soft blue light a number of lights emerged. By now, three hours later, the sky was crowded with strong planetary lights and starry cloud clusters. This sky must have been so familiar to our ancestors, who would have looked upwards as much outwards at each other and downwards at the earth. I felt comforted by the change in the night sky and started to feel more at ease on this journey which, twisting and turning, seemed to carry on outside the boundaries of time. I did not try to work out a logic to where I had been or where I was going, just concentrating on each step. At last we reached the exit where we returned to the campfire or went our separate ways into the darkness. I returned to the campfire to ponder and communicate with fire in another form and felt that something had altered within me forever. Was it a release? The start of something? A birthing of a divine child of promise? A seed so deeply planted in darkness? Or the liberation of a part of me held in darkness for years? I did not know, do not yet know; I am unable to articulate, choose or shape the words for such a fragile, subtle sense of something but it is there and I now trust will emerge at the right time. Later in a meditation, I become aware that the fire was liberation not limitation. In spite of all the hardship, difficulty and struggle since that event were I to be given the choice of which path, this time would choose the fire experience which gave me back to myself in a rich full, hard and challenging life. Walking back to the house on that Sunday after my latest fire experience I feel held between two histories, ancestral and personal and somehow sense that fire - either ritual or accidental - contains the capacity to heal even the deepest and oldest wounds.

Gestures in Celtic Shamanism

Certain had gestures are mentioned in Celtic legends as well as being represented in Celtic art. For a shaman to accomplish a desired goal, the intention of a new perception of reality must exist. This requires unbending purpose. To help achieve unbending purpose, the spiritual warrior can use passes with the hands to reach into the astral planes of the Otherworld and bring back the right type of energy. Here are a few such gestures: Cleansing To do a cleansing pass, stand straight with your hands palms up close to the chest and close your eyes. As you breathe in, visualize your hands filled with brilliant white light. As you exhale, sweep the arms down to the sides, then up above the head. End with the palms together above the head. Inhale again, and draw the hands down over the outline of the body. Do not touch the body itself, but keep the hands about two to four inches away. Continue the sweep down to the feet. Finish by shaking the hands sharply to dislodge any contaminating particles. This pass may be used before a healing, meditation, ritual, or any time during the day when you feel stress creeping up on you. Gathering Rub the palms of the hands together until they begin to feel warm. Inhale As you stretch your arms out to each side and slowly bring the hands close together in front of you. The closer your hands get, the more you feel a slight tingling and or a pushing against the palms. This is psychic energy between your hands. Exhale slowly, and then breathe normally. This gathering can be repeated until you feel you have gathered as much energy as you can at this time. This energy can be molded into a tight ball, as described in the next hand pass. Molding When you feel as if you have gathered enough energy between your hands, begin to move your hands back and forth in a slight rocking motion. Visualize yourself molding the energy as you would a ball of clay,

smoothing the sides and making it more compact. As the energy becomes more compact, it will produce a stronger tingling or pushing feeling against your hands. This energy can be placed directly on the diseased part of a client's body for healing, on a candle to be used in spellwork, or in the center of your ritual or meditation space as a working aid or protector. This ball of energy will last from a few minutes for a beginner to several hours or days for an advanced student. Defense We all come under attack at one time or another, perhaps not physically, but certainly mentally, emotionally, and psychically. When this happens, quickly gather the astral energy with your hands. Do this by making a scooping motion with your hands, followed by brining your hands together as if holding a ball. Holding the energy ball in your right hand, turn your hand, palm inward toward your throat. Then making a sharp "pah" sound, throw your arm straight in front of you and release the ball. You do not have to be facing the responsible person for the energy ball to find him/her. Simply keep the person's name in mind as you do this magical pass. These gestures are used quite often by Celtic shaman in there everyday routines.

Isle of Sky Meditation

Close your eyes and visualize a brilliant violet white light over your head. As you inhale deeply, feel this light coursing through you body, from your head down to your toes. Feel your muscles relaxing, beginning with your feet. The deep sense of peacefulness moves up through your legs, into your body and arms. You feel the tenseness flow out of the muscles in your shoulders, neck, and head. You are completely relaxed. Before you now is a river. Take all the problems in your life and throw them into the swiftly moving water. The problems are quickly carried far away. You will be constantly protected during the meditation. Absolutely nothing can harm you. You are in a small boat approaching an island. Huge rocky hill masses rise into the blue sky, clawing at the fleecy white clouds sailing overhead. As the boat bumps up onto the beach, you see a group of warriors, both men and women, waiting for you. As you join them, they lead the way along a path that passes thatched stone cottages, with fishing nets hung on racks. You go beyond the village toward higher ground. There, with the rugged mountains as a backdrop, you see clusters of rough stone buildings surrounding a leveled field. On this field are warriors practicing their leaps and lunges, swords in hand. As you watch, a tall woman wearing a concealing helmet walks toward you. Her long black hair is pulled through the top of the helmet and falls in a thick braid down her muscled back. As she takes off helmet, she looks at you with penetrating dark eyes. Welcome to my school she says, I am Scathach. I have been waiting for you. Come with me You follow her into a long stone building with a steep thatched roof. The interior is brightly lit with torches; a round stone hearth with a low-burning fire marks the center of the room. Tapestries hang on the walls with wooden benches beneath them. Scathach walks to a high-backed chair and sits down, gesturing you to sit on the bench near her right hand. Do you understand what makes a spiritual warrior? Scathach asks. It requires courage and dedication, determination and discretion. A spiritual warrior does not reply on physical weapons, but on weapons of the heart and mind. You must dedicate yourself to fight evil wherever you find it. However, the fight takes place only in the astral planes of the Otherworld.

Her dark eyes hold yours, as she looks deep within your soul. Personal desires, likes and dislikes, have little to do with fulfilling your task as a spiritual warrior. You will always recognize evil when you see it. Evil is your only enemy, whether the evil is done by a personal foe or by a friend against someone you dislike. Will you accept the challenge? You answer truthfully, asking any questions you may have. Why do want to walk the path of the spiritual warrior? she asks. Answer her a best you can with truthfulness and sincerity. Scathach will answer other questions you may have about your life and goals. Listen closely to what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. Come, she says as she rises and goes to the outer door. You follow and find a dense fig has rolled in off the sea and it is so thick over the practice field that you cannot see half way down its length. The silent warriors are now lined up on both sides of a path of glowing coals, a path that stretches off into the blinding fog. To be initiated into the path of the warrior, you must walk this path of coals. Scathach points to the bright ribbon that leads from just before you off into the fog. Heat waves rising from the coals make ripples in the air. If you do not walk the path now, you cannot return for four moons. The warriors lining the path of coals begin beating their swords against their shields. You take a deep breath and begin walking down the glowing path, your eyes locked on the end in the fog ahead. The warriors shout wild cries of encouragement. You do not look down, although you can see and hear the crunch of coals under your feet. You feel no heat or burning as you stride confidently toward the end. You walk on and on, determined to succeed. When you reach the end of the path of coals, you find Scathach waiting for you. You have done well, she says and smiles. As a warrior you must believe in yourself and what you can do, even when others do not believe you. She hands you a silver armband in a symbolic design that will have meaning to your life. Look at it clearly. This symbil will remain with you in an astral form even after you return to the physical world. You may return at any time for further instruction, Sacthach says.If you need help, call upon me, and I will come. You may now talk further with Scathach and her warriors if you wish. When you are ready to leave, you look up to see a white stag waiting at the edge of the bank of fog. You follow the stag until you once again reach the ocean. You think of your physical body and find yourself within it. The meditation is ended.

Prayer for Creating Sacred Space

To the Winds of the South, Great Serpent surround me with your coils of light, so I may shed the past, as you shed your skin. To the Winds of the West, Jaguar, protect my sacred medicine space. Show me the way of peace. To the Winds of the North, Hummingbird and Elders who have walked before me. Whisper to me in the wind. I honor you who have come before me. To the Wind of the East, Great Eagle Keep me under your wings, and teach me to fly with Great Spirit high above the mountains. Mother Earth and all your children, the Stone People, the Plant People, the animals. I give thanks for your presence here and now. Father Sun, Grandmother Moon & Great Spirit I thank you that I may sing the Song of Life another day. Aho

Sacred Smudging Ceremony

Sacred Smudging is a ceremony for cleansing that has been used in many native traditions throughout history. Widely varying cultures and religions from all over the Earth have discovered power in working with the smoke from burning herbs and incense. Smell is the sense that connects us to a deep, instinctual part of the brain. Certain scents have the power to change our energies and trigger emotions. Beyond that, the Native American smudging ceremony adds a dimension of ritual and respect for all the many diverse parts of Creation. The purpose of smudging is to cleanse yourself, your objects and/or a place. It can be done before other ceremonies or by itself. According to what we have been taught, certain plants have entered into a sacred agreement with us two-leggeds: in exchange for our respectful treatment of them, they will give up their lives so that we can have their purifying smoke to cleanse with and to pray with, so that we might stay in balance and keep our walk sacred. This means we are to pick the plants with honor, asking permission and giving thanks, taking only what we need and not damaging the plant. Below we share information on some herbs that are commonly used for smudging. Any of the herbs can be combined with any of the others, but we suggest that you try them one at a time at first to better connect with the unique powers of each. For smudging, as we were taught to do it, you will need something to burn the herbs in -- a bowl or a shell perhaps. We have been taught to use an abalone shell, a gift from the oceans. It helps to call in the element of Water, from where life began, to balance the four elements in the smudging ceremony. An abalone grows its shells in a spiral, and thus connects us to the first spiral that started all life. You will also need matches (which are less likely to burn your fingers than a lighter) and a feather or fan of feathers. The feather is to acknowledge the winged ones who dwell in the sky and to call in the element of Air. We have been taught to perform the smudging ceremony in the following manner, which we share with you. You are free to use it, or you may choose to learn another ceremony or create a way that feels right to you. No oneway is right or wrong. Place the abalone shell in front of you and thank it, aloud or silently, for the life that created it and for helping you in this

ceremony. Place the herb(s) that you will be using in the shell, thanking each as you hold it. They have died so that you could have this smoke. That should not inspire guilt, but rather gratitude for the sacrifice. One day you will give your body for other beings of the Earth. Next, light the smudge mix. As you bring forth the flame, thank Father Sun, from where all fires arise, and also thank the spirit of Fire for coming to help you with this ceremony. Make sure that some of each plant that you have put in the bowl gets lit. That way the smoke will contain all the energies you have chosen to work with. Fan the fire gently with your feather until the herbs are burning enough to create sufficient smoke. Then use the feather to put out the fire, with one or two quick passes. If the smudge looks like it is going out, fan it vigorously until it is smoking again. If it does go out, it is fine to relight it. Now, using both your hands as a cup, catch some smoke and bring it into your heart. Catch more smoke and pass it over your head and down your neck. Then with each hand, one at a time, pass the smoke along your opposite arm and hand. Then, using both hands, bring more smoke into your navel and down your legs to the ground. This process cleanses our hearts, minds and bodies and helps us to be grounded. While doing this, it is good to see the smoke carry away any cares or physical injuries. You can now smudge any objects that you might want to by passing them through the smoke from the four directions, starting with the East. Ask that the object be cleansed for your use or giveaway. If you are smudging with other people, smudge yourself first and then hold the shell by its edges for the others to smudge. You can also smudge a house or room that needs cleansing. Go around the room with the burning smudge, and using your feather, push any negative energy out through an open door or window. When you are done, let the ashes cool and give them back to the Earth with care. They are now going to be soil from which new life arises, so show respect for this part of the ceremony also, and empty the ashes thoughtfully, again thanking the herbs and the fire. Many people smudge before any other ceremony, to start the day, or before and after a serious discussion. For us, this is a very real ceremony. After doing it, we feel better, our energy feels lighter, and so the day goes better. And it is good to cleanse your house occasionally to clear out any stagnant energy. Above all, realize that with ceremony it is the sacred intent of us two-leggeds which opens the door for these powers to work with us.

Sage The power of sage is the power to drive away negative energies. California (broad leaves) and desert (smaller leaves) sage are used interchangeably, or sometimes even together, but usually people prefer one or the other. Sweet grass Sweet grass has the power to call in positive energies. Its sweet smell helps make our objects and us sweet to spirit. It is sometimes called the hair of the Earth Mother and is braided in the field, with love, before it is harvested. The evergreens Cedar, juniper and pinon pine -- provide balance and harmony. Lavender Lavender has a calming and relaxing influence. Rose Petals Rose petals call in the power of the heart. Copal The Aztecs in many of their purification ceremonies used copal. They burned it in their temples during ceremony. It is very powerful and sweet, so you may want to try it in small amounts at first. Frankincense and myrrh, along with gold, were gifts to the newborn Jesus because at the time they were as precious and hard to find. They can raise your energies in various ways, and are often used to enhance meditation. The delicate, earthy fragrance of amber, a fossilized resin, helps us connect with ancient knowledge. Sandalwood Sandalwood comes from the heart of certain trees in Asia, including India, where it has been burned for centuries as an aid in reaching a meditative state. Tobacco Tobacco is a very sacred herb when not abused. It has the power to absorb our prayers and carry them to Creator. We do not smudge with tobacco, but rather use it in our prayer pipe ceremonies and for making offerings.

Note: The gum resins (pinon pine, copal, frankincense, myrrh, amber and sandalwood) need to be burned on charcoal tablets. The charcoal gets very hot so be careful what you put it in for burning. A ceramic bowl with a layer of sand in the bottom is ideal; we recommend against using an abalone shell because the heat might crack it. Charcoal is a high-energy gift from the Earth Mother. Its black color helps absorb negativity. Light one edge of a charcoal tablet, and after the fire crackles through it, sprinkle just a few grains of resin in the indent in the center.

Spirit Guide Meditation

This meditation can bring about relaxation, clairvoyance, increased healing ability, enhanced awareness, greater ability toward visualization, balance your energy and aid you in reaching goals 1. Sit comfortably, either on a cushion with legs folded or on a straight back chair. Keep your spine erect (without force). If you are sitting on a chair do not lean back. Rub your hand together and put your hands on your knees or on another place comfortable for you. 2. Relax and breath slowly, think about your spirit guides, ask that your Spirit guides join you. 3. Draw the Om symbol in front of you with your whole hand. Visualize how a violet light comes out through your fingers as you draw the symbol in the air in front of you. 4. Visualize the symbol in the third eye chakra and recite Om three times. Keep the symbol steadily in your third eye. 5. When you feel that you have meditated enough on this symbol let it float up into a field of light above your head. Return your consciousness to the third eye chakra. 6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 with the Mental/Emotional symbol and the Distance symbol. 7. When you are finished meditating on the three symbols you will be concentrated and full of healing Reiki energy. You can now continue with the final part of the meditation where you can send Reiki to your projects, goals or healing others at a distance. 8. Send Reiki by visualizing or describing the object, goals or person. You can use the method you have learned or the one you feel is most suitable to you. 9. When finished, slowly relax and release all thoughts. Sit quietly for a few minutes and enjoy the peace. 10. Rub your hands together and "wash" your face with them. Open your eyes, walk a few steps and feel how refreshed you are. Thank your Spirit Guides

Spring Equinox Ritual

The power of the Spring Equinox, and all the rituals done throughout human history at the spring equinox is the power of fearlessness. This ritual is about surrendering your fear. Fear is an illusion. You are asked to transform that illusion in the preparation for this ritual. Using your capacity to gain clarity about your fears you will transform them into "flowers." It is through this transformation that we find the courage to open our hearts, again and again, to all that life has to offer us. Things you will need: 1. Fire or large candle. Set up the space with the fire or large candle with altar in the center. Also place in the center: celebratory beverage, cups, spring water and rose petals. 2. Candles for the four directions. Set up the candles of the four elements with altars to form the outer circle of the ritual space. You will stand within them. If the fire is not in the center, for example if it is in the hearth of a home, set up your circle so that the fire is also part of the outer circle of sacred space along with the candles for the four directions. 3. Spring water and rose petals (Other flower petals will work.) 4. Celebratory beverage Ideally this would be mead. You will have to determine what will work with your group and location. It can be fruit juice, an alcoholic punch or beverage, or even spring water. Spend some time to prepare this beverage with intention. Place it in the center near the fire or the altar. The drink itself takes in the energy of the seven directions and the ritual so that it becomes a medicine for opening the heart. Select and prepare this beverage with that opening of the heart in mind. 5. Food and music for a real celebration. 6. Dress as your Lover-of-Life Self. Do not hesitate to be extravagant.

7. People celebrating and sharing joy together is important to compete this ritual. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't do it alone if that is your only option. Think of it this way: The ritual asks you to step outside of your comfort zone and find people in your life whom will join you in this ritual. Things are not always what they seem. You may be surprised by who will be willing to take some time to prepare their "flowers". Find people who are open to something new that could help them to move through their fears and to open their heart to life.

Preparation
I. Explore what you have learned to perceive as real that is not in truth a reality.

1 a. What things you have learned to perceive about safety? b. What is the highest truth about safety? 2 a. What things you have learned to perceive about your own limitations b. What is the highest truth about your limitations? 3 a. What things you have learned to perceive about your own work in the world. b. What is the highest truth about your work in the world? 4 a. What things you have learned about the cost of the journey of your soul. b. What is the highest truth about the cost of your soul's journey? All the (b's) are your "goals" you must create to open your heart. II. Ask yourself each of the four questions in journeys, mediation, or dreamwork.

1. Why do I fear showing kindness toward The Other? 2. Why do I fear feeling deep compassion for my self? 3. Why do I fear believing in what could be (in spite of what appears to be)?

4. Why do I fear feeling the courage it takes to live what I believe in? These are the illusions you need to explore to prepare for this ritual. III. When you have your deepest answer to the four questions, ask spirit, "Show me how I get from the deepest answer (your current reality) to the corresponding goal (your desired future reality). Example: Deepest answer #1 --> path of transformation to -->1b. Make a flower in some way out of paper, tissue paper, ribbons, or whatever. Invest this flower energetically with the path of transformation you must take to get to the goal you are trying to create in the heart. This is the journey you now know you must walk. In this ritual you are asking the spirit world to help you walk it. You have several months to delve deeply into your fears and limitations. This "bouquet of flowers" can grow and grow between now and the Spring Equinox. Ritual process: This ritual begins at sunset. Enter the circle eldest to youngest. 1. First person enters the circle, lights the east candle, and walks the full circle of the sacred space. 2. Second person enters, bows to the east, lights the south candle, and 3. Third person enters, bows to the east and south, lights the west candle, and walks to fill the circle. 4. Fourth person enters, bows to the east, south, and west, lights the north candle, and walks to fill the circle. 5. Everyone else enters and fills the circle. Hold hands. Sing songs of your own choosing. 6. Youngest person steps up and calls the Sky and the Earth energies into the fire to ground the sacred space. If you have a central altar the

youngest person steps up to light the candle and call in the energies to ground the sacred space. 7. Everyone call in your helping spirits and whomever you are inspired to call in to support the sacred intent of this fire. 8. Who ever is conducting the ritual or the eldest step up to the fire. State the intention of the ritual and the reason you are all gathered at this moment before this fire. Ask personally for your ancestors to be present to support you in the release and your purpose here at the fire. 9. Everyone step up to the fire, call on your ancestors, state your task, and ask for their support. Return to the circle and gather your "bouquet." 10. One at a time, walk around the circle showing everyone the "bouquet of flowers" you have created. 11. End at the fire. Put the flowers in one at a time, surrendering what has been. Ask the spirit world to help you to create what you need to open your heart. 12. Step away from the fire and to the youngest waiting near the fire. 13. Youngest sprinkle the person with fresh spring water and rose petals. Offer the blessing, "You are made clean and whole." 14. Return to your place in the circle and witness the next person until everyone is done. 15. Standing in circle, share your visions of what you would like in your future. Share clear, simple statements out loud to your community. 16. Sing together. 17. Go to each person in the circle, (This will be sort of chaotic. Just be sure you all stay within the boundaries of the circle.) Honor him/her for his/her vision and work at the fire. Look each other in the eye, take a moment to connect, let your hearts connect, and hug. 18. Honoring each other's visions and desires, notice any natural pairings

or partnerships that could assist in the manifestation of these visions. If you know you could help another in any way, offer, and make agreements in the circle to work together to make whatever that is happen. 19. When complete, re-form the circle for the closing. 20. Youngest serve everyone the "celebratory beverage." 21. Once everyone, even then the children has a glass, toast each other, the future, and drink together. 22. Take hands and state clearly unison to the spirit world: I do my part to make these visions real. I do my part with others so that together we make these visions real. I connect with spirit to gain assistance to make these visions real. 23. Gratitude to all the spirits you called in. File out of the circle eldest to youngest. 24. Close in celebration with music, food, stories, dancing, and laughter. Generating joy together is the final step in this ritual.

Symbols of the Celtic Mystic/Shaman

The path of the mystic has symbols with deeper, multileveled meanings. The shaman must search during meditation for the most esoteric of these meanings, as they cannot be verbalized:
Oak: As an emblem of strength and long life, this tree was important and sacred to many ancient cultures. The oak was believed by the Celts to be an earthly representation of the Tree of Life. Salmon: In Celtic myth the salmon always is associated with wisdom gained from the Otherworld. It is also connected with sacred wells whose water flows directly from the Otherworld into the mortal world. Snake: The serpent is an ancient symbol of wisdom. Spiral: A symbol of the constantly moving energies of the universe and the serpentenergy of the stars, the spiral was a very sacred design to the Celts. Travelers into the Otherworld frequently follow a spiral path. Stone: The Celts did not often carve images of their deities. Instead they believed that monolithic stones frequently represented these deities. Stones symbolized a place of primordial power, particularly Goddess power. Tore: This piece of Celtic jewelry was made of strands of metal twisted together and formed into a circle. The circle represents the ultimate state of oneness, progression from time to timelessness, from the body-obsessed consciousness to the spirit-centered consciousness. Year Wheel: On one level the wheel with eight spokes is symbolic of time and movement of karma, on another level it represented the movement of the Celtic Sacred year. Each spoke signified a religious festival.

The Cauldron of Cerridwen Meditation

Learning and practicing meditation is an absolute must for anyone on the Metis Shamanic path. Regular meditation, not less than once a week, keeps you balanced and more able to cope with unexpected happenings. It also opens you to true messages from the ancestors, your spirit guides, and angels. These messages may come during meditation itself or through dreams.

The Cauldron of Cerridwen Meditation

Close your eyes and visualize a brilliant violet white light over your head. As you inhale deeply, feel this light coursing through your body, from your head down to your toes. Feel your muscles relaxing, beginning with your feet. The deep sense of peacefulness moves up through your legs, into your body and arms. You feel the tenseness flow out of the muscles in your shoulders, neck, and head. You are completely relaxed. Before you now is a well. Take all the problems in your life and throw them into the deep darkness of the well. The problems are quickly carried away from you. Leave them there, turn and walk away. You will be constantly protected during this meditation. Absolutely nothing can harm you. You are standing on the pebble-strewn shores of a wide lake with beautiful mountains around you. Thick stands of trees cover the slopes, their boughs and leaves rustling in a small breeze. You hear the songs of birds as they flit from tree to tree. The sun is sinking behind the distant mountains and casting a brilliant red and gold glow across the waters of the lake. As the last rays of the sun leave the lake, the birds of the forest around you fall silent. You watch a white stag and doe come down to the lake to drink. A night chorus of frogs calls to each other from the reeds along the bank, while overhead the moon begins to rise in the sky. When the deer leaves, you walk to where they drank and watch as the moonlight lays down a silvery path across the lake. As the light touches your feet, the waters of the lake gently pull back, opening a path from the shore to the center of the lake bed. At the end of this path you see the bright, firelit opening of a cave mouth. Strange, enthralling music drifts to you from cave, and you feel compelled to see what lies within this hidden place.

You quickly follow the path until you stand at the entrance to the underwater cave. As you peer within, you see a huge cauldron hung over a blazing fire in the center of the smooth cave floor. Sitting in a chair behind the cauldron is a figure shrouded in a dark cloak, the hood low over the face, concealing the facial features. By the chair sits a beautiful fairy woman playing a harp. The fairy beckons you to enter. As you pass the cauldron to sit beside the fairy , you notice the dark liquid roiling within the great cast-iron vessel and catch glimpses of strange pictures as they quickly come and go from sight. When you reach the fairy, the dark, silent figure in the cloak moves, thrusting back the hood with one wrinkled hand. A strong aged woman stares at you intently. Her dark eyes are like mirrors, reflecting the firelight. Welcome, the old woman says. Why do you come to the cave of Cerridwen? Do you seek initiation and inspiration? If you answer NO, the woman will not speak to you again, although you may converse with the fairy woman. If you answer YES, the old woman takes a cup and dips a little of the cauldron water into it. Drink this, and prepare for initiation, she say. I am Cerridwen, the great initiation, the opener of the way, the guardian of the door to the past. You swallow the liquid and immediately feel different. Your sight is clearer, and you can see the energy running through the rocks of the cave walss. You feel the harp music against your skin and taste it on your tongue. You hear the sounds of colors around you, and smell scents drifting from the Otherworld. You explore these new dimensions of your senses for a time. At last, Cerridwen takes your hand and leads you to stand beside the cauldron. She suddenly plunges your hand into the dark liquid. To your surprise, it is cool to the touch, even though it bubbles and boils over the fire. This is the gate to the past, Cerridwen says. The past history of this world. The past lives and history of yourself. Do you wish to see who you were befor and what lessons you have carried with you into this life to learn? If you answer NO, you leave the cave and return to the lakeshore. Of you answer YES, Cerridwen suddenly plunges you into the dark cauldron. You sink deep into the cauldron but are not afraid. You see brilliant colored pictures floating around you. To see more of a past life, you

focus on a picture and find yourself in that time and place, observing all that takes place. You may explore several past lives before you once more find yourself standing beside Cerridwen. Always search for the truth as it is, she admonishes you. Not as you wish the truth to be. Truth is the key to the great spiritual mysteries. Without seeking and recognizing truth, you cannot progress and learn. You spend a few minutes talking with Cerridwen and the fairy harper. When you are ready to leave, you look out the mouth of the cave to see the strange path of moonlight illuminating the waters of the lake. The waters open, leaving a clear path out of the underwater cave. You follow the moon lit path until once again reach the lakeshore. You think of your physical body and find yourself within it. The meditation is ended.

The Lord of Animals Meditation

Let us begin. You find yourself walking on a path through a thick forest. Sunlight glimmers through the thick branches overhead, and you can see all varieties of trees around you. The air is warm and sweet. Birds sing in the trees as you walk around. Soon you reach a clearing. In the center of this clearing is a huge, ancient oak tree. Bright wildflowers dot the grass. As you walk toward the oak, a tall man, crowned with antlers, steps from behind the tree. He is dressed in leather trousers and has woven cloak thrown over his bare shoulders. He sits down near the tree, his legs crossed,

and watches you as you approach. By the mans side, half-hidden in the grass, is a large drum. Greetings, he says in a deep voice. I am the Lord of Animals. What do you wish of me? You sit down facing this Otherworld being and explain that you are seeking animal allies to help you along spiritual path. The Lord picks up the drum and strikes it with a wooden stick. The deep sound rolls out through the forest, echoing back from the thick groves of trees. Soon the clearing is full variety of wild animals, birds, insects, and aquatic creatures, a few approach you. These will work with, the Lord says. They will teach you different ways of observing what is around you. Listen to them, and learn. You spend time getting acquainted with these new helpers of the animal kingdom. If you have more questions, you may speak with the Lord of Animals. When you are ready to leave, your animal allies go with you into the forest along the path. As the path once more exits into an open space, you think of you physical body and find yourself within it. The meditation is ended.

The Great Seeress Meditation

To gain help with visions of the past and future, the traveler must seek out the Seeress. This Otherworld being is sometimes found near a sacred well, deep in a cave, or near a circle of standing stones on a hilltop. She holds a golden rod with which she weaves and spins the thread of creation into a living web that creates the future. A great oracle, she has remarkably accurate powers of seeing the future and knowing the best action to take on any problem. The seeress Fedelm, whose story is in the Tain Bo Cuailnge, is symbolic of the Seeress in the Otherworld. Visiting the Great Seeress Meditation Close your eyes and visualize a brilliant violet white light over your head. You find yourself near a great circle of standing stones. The stones are on top of a hill. Far below you see woodlands with a sparkling river running through them. As you walk toward the huge monoliths, you see a woman standing inside the circle with a golden weaving rod in her hands. She is dressed in along white robe, and her dark hair falls loosely to her waist. She is weaving thin strands of a shiny substance between the great stones. As she moves, you see flashes of light from the golden torc about her neck and the gold and silver bracelets on her arms.

As you stand just outside the stone circle, the woman calls for you to enter and join her as she weaves. She explains that she is the Seeress, the ones who weaves life threads of all beings, all events, of the universe itself, into a living web. She lays aside her weaving rod and gestures for you to sit beside her on a large flat stone in the center of the circle. On the stone are a deck of tarot cards, a set of ogham sticks, and a bag of runestones. Ask your question, the Seeress requests. I will tell you what I can. However you must hear the truth of actuality, not of wishes, if you would learn the answer to your question. You ask the Seeress about some problem or goal in your life. She tells you what she can, then goes on to explain what divinatory device you should study at this time. She explains that, later, you may study another divinatory method method if you wish. You sit with the Seeress and ask any questions you may have about divination and the she has suggested to you. You may also ask about other event in your life that is troubling you. Finally, she smiles and returns to her weaving. You step outside the circle of the standing stones. You think of your physical body and find yourself within it. The meditation is ended.

Sacred Shamanic Smudging

Sacred Shamanic Smudging is an age-old native tradition which has been used for centuries to create harmony and peace. There are many different sacred shamanic smudging ceremonies, and different tribes & different cultures use a variety of herbs for smudging and cleansing. To define it more clearly, sacred shamanic smudging is the burning of herbs or incense for cleansing, purification, protection of physical and spiritual bodies, banishment of negative energies and creation of sacred space. You can use smudge sticks (herbs that are tied into a bundle for easier handling), braided herbs and botanicals (like sweetgrass) or loose herbs (burned on charcoal or mugwort, or in a firepit). Sacred Shamanic Smudging releases the energy and fragrance of the herbs and botanicals so they can heal, cleanse and purify. In many traditions, shamanic smudging involves a four directions ceremony or prayer, which sends specific kinds of smoke or prayers into the four directions. Different tribes have different smudging prayers that program the smoke to do a specific action, such as cleansing or aiding in divination. In general, sacred shamanic smudging can be used in daily life for practical purposes: to restore physical, mental and emotional balance; to shield against negative energies; to cleanse yourself, your magical tools and your space; and to restore you sacred space. COMMON HERBS USED IN SACRED SMUDGING Although different tribes and traditions use different herbs for shamanic smudging, some of the most popular herbs include desert sage, white broadleaf sage, juniper, pinon (sometimes in resin form), sweetgrass, copal (in resin form), mugwort, lavender and sacred tobacco. Here are some general uses for the different herbs often used for smudging:

Pinon Resin Primarily fire element though can also be used as for four-element general purposes. Has a pleasant and meditative fragrance. Is cleansing, strengthening, warming, and used by Native American cultures for its spiritual and healing properties. Produces a thick stream of smoke, and is excellent for refreshing the senses and reviving a tired soul. Copal Gold Resin Primarily fire and water elements though can also be used as for fourelement general purposes. When burned, the scent is sweet, resinous, slightly woody, mildly earthy and spicy. Was a holy incense used by the peoples of Mesoamerica. Traditionally used as incense in divinatory and cleansing ceremonies. The resin contains aromatic chemicals called terpenes, which make it volatile and flammable. Used by Mayan shamans prior to ingesting mushrooms. Myrrh Resin Primarily earth element though can also be used as for four-element general purposes. Produces a lot of smoke when burned, very earthy, piney scent. Gathered from an almost leafless Middle Eastern shrub called the Commiphora Molmol. It was used by the ancient Egyptians in rituals of Healing and Passing. It is one of the ingredients used by the Egyptians to embalm bodies. Useful for spirituality, meditation, happiness, release, transformation, strength, confidence and stability. Frankincense Resin Primarily fire element though can also be used as for four-element general purposes. Is the resin of an African tree and produces a rich, dense smoke when burned. Used extensively in meditation and healing. In numerous religious traditions, frankincense's spiritual scent was believed to confer divine blessing. Pliny the Elder mentioned it as an antidote to hemlock poisoning. Desert Sage Primarily air element though can also be used as for four-element general purposes. Has a somewhat sharp, light and refreshing scent. One of the most sacred herbs among Native Americans. Used to purify the mind, body and spirit before prayer, meditation, ritual or ceremony. Also used to purify sacred items such as pipes, magical tools, tarot decks and eagle feathers. Can be used for area, house and personal cleansings. Some people carry a small amount of Sage in a pocket or medicine pouch to insure personal and

spiritual safety. Juniper Primarily fire element though can also be used as for four-element general purposes. Has a sharp, piney scent. Excellent to stimulate and revive when tired in body, mind or Spirit. Used in ancient times for ritual purification of temples. Smoke believed to aid clairvoyance. Also useful for purification and to stimulate contact with other worlds. Burned during the Plague to resist disease. Lavender Primarily air element. Has a light, aromatic and refreshing scent. Useful for attracting peace, happiness and restful sleep. Also reduces depression, grief and sorrow. Aids in meditation and divination, and often said to aid in manifestation. Known as Elf Leaf, Nard, Nardus, Spike and Lavender.

White Broadleaf Sage

Traditionally associated with fairies and elves. White Broadleaf Sage Primarily air element though can also be used as for four-element general purposes. This is a broad leaf sage is highly prized for its strong aromatic properties (strongest of the different types of sage). Considered the king if all sages. Excellent for meditation, divination, smudging, cleansing and purification. Yerba Santa Leaves Traditionally used for enhancing psychic abilities, magical protection, healing and spiritual strength. Excellent for meditation and divination. Said to be ruled by the moon. One Native American tribe rolled the leaves into balls, dried it in the sun and chewed it for a natural mouthwash. Hibiscus Flowers Primarily fire and water elements. Produces a sharp, invigorating scent that lasts for a long time after burning. Often used in divination and psychic communication. Excellent for rejuvenating the senses and restoring life force.

Rose Petals

Primarily water element. Produces a heavy, warm, aromatic scent with just a hint of sharpness scent lasts a long time after burning. Excellent for meditation, divination, increasing psychic abilities, contacting powers and beings in other dimensions ad psychic communication. Also traditionally associated with attracting love, conferring peace, stimulating sexual appetites and enhancing beauty.

Sweetgrass
Primarily air element. As its name suggests, sweetgrass produces a sweet and light fragrance that does not last for long. Excellent for cleansing sacred space. Sweetgrass is a rare grass which is found growing wild in very few places. Traditionally, sweetgrass is believed to invite the good spirits. You can burn these herbs singly or in combination with each other. One good combination that covers all four magical elements of air, fire, water and earth is pine resin and sage (either desert sage or white broadleaf sage). This combination is appropriate for general use, cleansing, ceremony and ritual.

WHEN TO SMUDGE YOURSELF Smudging yourself on a daily basis can be very helpful in keeping yourself balanced and maintaining a peaceful state of being. However, you should definitely use shamanic smudging techniques when youve been around people who are ill, depressed, fearful, angry or generally emotionally unbalanced; before meditating to create a calm state of being; when youre feeling blue or depressed; or when youve been under a lot of stress. Smudging yourself is easy. If you're using a smudge stick, light the smudge stick on a candle flame. Hold the stick in the flame until there is a lot of smoke and the stick is burning well (that s why a candle is better than a matchit can take a while to get the stick really smoking). Using a feather (or feather fan) or your hand, gently fan the smoke onto your body, starting at the top of the body and moving downward. Get the back of your body as best you can (it is often easier to use a smudge pot and loose herbs for this).

When you are done, inhale a little of the smoke (just a little!) to purify your insides. If you're using a smudge pot or Firebowl and loose herbs, light the herbs (using self-lighting charcoalnot the barbeque kind!) until it is smoking well. Then, put the Firebowl on the ground and stand over it with your legs spread and feet on either side. Weave back and forth in the smoke until you have been thoroughly cleansed. Clothing is optional for this approach, and smudging in the nude is recommended for a more thorough cleansing. Again, when youre done, inhale a little of the smoke to purify your insides. People often feel more relaxed, lighter and brighter after smudging. If you're going to use the smudge smoke during meditation, use a charcoal burner or Firebowl, light the herbs and enjoy the scent and smoke as you meditate. Meditating with these herbs often produces a deeper and longerlasting state of relaxation and contemplation.

Shamanic Power Songs

Power Songs are oral prayers expressing your true self, your nature, your individuality, your power. All cultures have power songs but you can have your own power song too. We think of the power in a hymn or an African chant, a Shamanic ceremony song or even in the howling of wolf. And there is definite power in sound. All Shamans have several power songs because the vibration of the notes in the voice and in the fourth chakra of the throat which is the 5th Chakra (384 Hertz, note of G ) stimulate sympathetic vibrations in the universe to respond. Everything is connected. What you put out comes back to you. When a butterfly flutters his wings in Cost Rica the winds of Africa are stirred. And when a sound is offered, the universe responds. Power songs are used in preparation for journeying, healing, offering Reiki, praying, grounding, for protection, for celebration, for solace, anytime you want to connect with the universe in this very special way. To demonstrate the power of voice and musical notes I would like to you try this exercise. The fourth chakra is the note FA as in Do Re Me FA. Find a tuning fork, that is calibrated at that chakra vibration ( 341.3 Hertz). Listen to the sound of the tuning fork after striking it on a hockey puck or rubber mallet. The fourth note or sound of FA is also the note of manifestation or creation upon this planet. So if we want to manifest healing, for example, we can send our intention out upon the note FA into the universe and healing will resonate with our voice of FA and become manifest where we are intending. It really is that simple. Don't try to complicate it like so many others have. This little simple secret is one that some people have paid thousands of dollars for. Some people have made millions creating musical tapes based on the sound of Fa, subliminal, tapes that offer healing are based on the sound

FA. But now you know how to do it yourself. The visual symbol for the universe made manifest is the square. This symbolizes the power of thought and vibration becoming solid and material in this apparent world. So let's combine the sound of Fa with the visualization of a square. Get yourself someplace comfortable where you will not be disturbed for a while. Close your eyes and visualize a square. Intone the sound FA and watch the square and see what image appears there. You can also do this backwards by visualizing the person you want to heal in the square and intoning the sound of FA. Or anything that you would like to manifest for the good of yourself and the world. Shamans use this technique all the time. The last ingredient the Shaman uses here is desire or strong will. He or she really wants this healing to happen, they can really feel the wish, they put all their emotional energy into the intent. I often get to dancing and rattling while I intone my power song and bring my whole body into the act of intending a healing for someone. The more feeling you put into it, the stronger the vibration. Have you ever listened to a Native American song? There is usually one major tone for the song, isn't there! Now you know why! As a final thought, each note in the scale represents a unique vibratory pattern in the universe. You could do a study to find those out if you would like to know more about sound. So you see the need for your own power song. Create one this week. it is usually just a line or two repeated over and over. You can use words or vowels or an imaginary language. As long as you create it with FA as your base and emotion and intent, it will be perfect. Power songs are usually kept private and seldom sung in public. The only time they are sung in public is when a group of Shamans have gathered to do a combined healing. It is your prayer to the universe.

Opening Sacred Space

To open sacred space, close your eyes and move your hands into prayer pose at the heart charka (center of the chest). Extend your hands up past your forehead, brining your palms together. Fan your arms out to your sides, bringing your hands to rest in you lap. Experience the peaceful space you have created. Next call on the four directions, South, West, North, East, and call upon Father Sky, and Mother Earth, and ask them to assist you and protect you. Remember an animal totem governs each direction. In the south, the serpent which represents knowledge, sexuality & nature. In the West, the Jaguar the symbol of transformation and renewal. In the North, the Hummingbird, which symbolizes the strength and courage to travel great distances. In the East, the Eagle which symbolizes the ability to transcend this world. Above us we call on the sun to sustain us with Life. And below we call on Mother Earth the creative feminine.

Closing Sacred Space

Bring your hands together in prayer pose to your heart charka (center of chest) and then open them out to the side. Reaching wide, slowly fan them upward over your head bringing them into prayer pose. Next bring them down the centerline of your body, to your heart charka, again into prayer pose. Repeat the prayer to the four directions and Father Sky, and Mother earth that you used earlier, only this time thank and release each of the animal totems, and then close the sacred space.
