IV. PROCEDURE
Assess students’ prior knowledge of mitosis and meiosis by having them answer pre-learning
ELICIT
check items 1 and 2on page 94 of their textbook.
1. Present models of plant and animal cells on the board. If an internet connection is
available, you may project interactive images instead.
Ask: Which cell parts do you think
play the major roles in the cell cycle? Why? Have them take note of their answers which they
will need for the next activity.
2. Have students explore the cell models used in the previous activity to answer the
question:
Which cell parts play the major roles in the cell cycle? Mention that they can now click on
the
ENGAGE
cell parts. Have them compare their answers with their answers in the previous activity.
Ask
volunteers to share what they have learned. Use their answers to jump-start the
discussion.
Verity or correct their answers. Refer to figure 5-l in your discussion. Formalize also the
concept of cellular reproduction, cell cycle, and cell division. Let students read the rest
of the text on page 95 of the textbook, then ask: Is cellular reproduction" the same as cell
division'? cell cycle"? How about 'cell division" and "cell cycle"? Correct misconceptions
that may arise.
EXPLORE 1. Have students watch the video that can be accessed through this link: youtu.be/lePMXxQ-
KWY. Then, ask them to make a diagram showing the structure of a condensed
chromosome up to the DNA level. Have them compare their diagrams with the one in
figure 5-2. After comparing, have them revise their own diagrams. Ask volunteers to
share
what they have learned.
2. Divide the class into groups of five. (Mention that this grouping is their grouping for all
the activities in the chapter.) Ask each group to make simple 3D fuzzy wire models of
four chromosomes in different colors (sister chromatids should be the same color) but
of the same size. Check their models and suggest modifications as needed (Take note
that the models should accommodate demonstration of the events in the
interphase, mitosis, and meiosis.).
3. Tell them to keep their models as they will use them in the discussion of the next lessons.
Let them share their outputs with the class by answering these questions: What are the
parts of a chromosome? What role does it play in cell division?
4. Have students read Interphase: Preparation for Cell Division in their textbook Afterward
let them go to their respective groups (same grouping as before). Ask each group to
demonstrate what happens during interphase using their 3D models of a chromosome
(have them use other materials as needed). Ask them to highlight the cell parts and
chromosome parts involved and the function of each. Formalize concepts after the
demonstrations.
Conduct a post-laboratory discussion to check their understanding and to correct any
EXPERIENCE misconceptions.
1. Have students make a spider web graphic organizer about the importance of meiosis. Let
EMPATHIZE
them form groups of three and share their output with the other groups.
Multiple Choice. Write the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which of the following are the types of cell division.
A. Mitosis and Meiosis C. Mitosis and Prophase
B. Mitosis and Interphase D. Mitosis and cell cycle
2. During which phase in the cell cycle does mitosis happen?
A. G1 phase B. G2 phase C. M phase D. S phase
3. Which pair includes a phase of the cell cycle and a cellular
EVALUATE process that occurs during that phase?
A. G1 phase, DNA replication C. G2 phase, preparation for mitosis
B. S phase, cell division D. M phase, cell growth
4. The shortest part of the cell cycle.
A. G0 B. G1 C. S D. M
5. DNA is replicated at this time of the cell cycle.
A. G0 B. G1 C. S D. G2
