Indeed, the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta
has really come of age. We are here this
afternoon to enrich our knowledge from the
30th Inaugural Lecture of the University, and I
have the honour and privilege to welcome you
to this great citadel of knowledge. This is the
maiden edition from the metamorphosed
College of Agricultural Management and Rural
Development (COLAMRUD) and the very first
from the Department of Agricultural Extension
and Rural Development, and the ninth that I
would preside over as Vice-Chancellor. 5
 A native of
Ikere-Ekiti,
Ekiti State.
 Born on
the 20th
July, 1956
in Ikere-
Ekiti to the
family of
Mr. and
Mrs. Peter
Omotayo.

Church Primary School, Afawo, Ikere-Ekiti
1968.
Secondary education - African Church
Comprehensive High School, Ikere - Ekiti
Obtained his West African School
Certificate (WASC) in June 1974,
Proceed to the Federal College of
Education Yola, where he obtained the
Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in
1979.

He enrolled at the University of
Nigeria, Nsukka during the
1981/82 Academic Session,
where he completed the first
year, out of the two-year
Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural
Education Programme

Proceeded to the Virginia State
University, Petersburg, Virginia,
USA, on Federal Government
Scholarship, where he obtained the
Bachelor of Science and Master of
Science degrees in Agricultural
Education in 1983 and 1984
respectively.

Professor Omotayo worked
briefly as a teacher at Unity
Secondary School, Ado-Ekiti
between 1985 and 1987 and was
later an Education Officer in the
Inspectorate Division of the Ondo
State Ministry of Education,
between 1987 and 1988.

He moved to the Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria during the 1988/89 Academic Session
and enrolled as a full-time Ph.D. student in
the Department of Agricultural Economics
and Rural Sociology. Thereafter, he joined
the services of the National Agricultural
Extension and Research Liaison Services
(NAERLS), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria,
in July, 1990 while he continued with his
Ph.D. programme, which he completed in
November, 1995.

He also attended a short
course in Geographical
Information System (GIS)
and Remote Sensing at the
Natural Resources Institute
(NRI), United Kingdom in
April, 2001.

 Professor Omotayo started his academic
career in July, 1990 as Assistant Extension
Specialist at NAERLS, Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria.
 He joined the services of the University of

Agriculture, Abeokuta in August 1997 as a
Senior Lecturer.

He served two terms as Head of
the Department of Agricultural
Extension and Rural
Development between 1997 and
2000. He rose through the ranks
and became a Professor in
October, 2003.

a Visiting Fellow at the
African Studies Centre,
Leiden, The
Netherlands, from April
to July, 2002.

He has served the University in
several capacities.
• He was appointed Director of the
Agricultural Media Resources and
Extension Centre (AMREC) in
August, 2006, a position he held until
he moved to Ekiti State as the
Commissioner for Agriculture in
February, 2008.

He returned to the University in May, 2009
and was appointed Director, UNAAB
CONSULT Limited, a position he still
holds.

of the University’s Journal of Agricultural
Sciences, Science, Environment and
Technology (ASSET).
Professor Omotayo represented the
University in some national assignments.
These include the Presidential Committee
on Development of Successor Generation
of Farmers, from November, 2006 to
February, 2007. 21

member of the
Accreditation Team to
some Universities in
South-Eastern Nigeria in
November, 2007.

He has won numerous, competitive
research grants. They include
The International Institute of Environment
and Development (IIED), United Kingdom,
Small Grant for thesis writing.
The Welcome Trust Research Grant on
Population Studies.
The Welcome Trust Research Grant on
Health Consequences of Lifestyle
Changes in Developing Countries, among
others.

Distinguished audience, the Inaugural
Lecturer has trained many students at
undergraduate and postgraduate
levels. He has supervised:
Over 80 undergraduate projects,
Major supervisor to more than 15
Masters degree students
Graduated 8 Ph.D. candidates.

Professor Omotayo is
married to Mrs. Mary Folake
Omotayo, a Senior Library
Officer at the College of
Veterinary Medicine Library,
University of Agriculture,
Abeokuta and they are
blessed with three children.

is my pleasure to invite Professor
Akinwumi Moses Omotayo, a
distinguished scholar, a consummate
researcher, a committed teacher, a
seasoned extension practitioner, and
undoubtedly, a sincere advocate of the
Nigerian farmer, to present his
inaugural lecture titled: 31
