Personal Reflection on the Group Design Exercise
This Design Project was a good experience that allowed me to work in a group with new people
and deepen my understanding of Electrical Substations, how they are structured and how they
can be optimised. In this reflection, I will discuss our group’s organization and management
approach, analyse the group dynamics, describe my contributions, and evaluate the
effectiveness of the exercise for my learning.
1. Organization and Management of the Design Exercise
Our group started working on the Design in the first lab session. Then we divided the task into
manageable sections based on each member’s strengths and interests. We held a kick-off
meeting in the CAD Lab to brainstorm ideas on the design and assign responsibilities. We decided
to use shared documents for costs analysis and final report. We used WhatsApp to keep in touch.
2. Group Dynamics
The group dynamics were very positive and supportive. I must thank Tommaso and Gandhamani,
who brought good perspectives and great skills with the PowerWord programme. I felt a bit lost
since it was the first time I was using it. It was very helpful having them in my group. One
supporting factor was the high level of respect and patience everyone displayed.
3. My Contributions to the Process
In terms of my contributions, I took part on the role of organizing our report information and
summarizing our findings. I also did some of the cost analysis; for the final designs and those that
we end up discarding. I worked on the design on my own (not successfully) and with my group in
the lab meeting, which helped shape our overall approach. Additionally, I helped in shaping the
introduction. I also did the Methodology part of the report, where we explain the procedure we
followed and the calculations we made on transmission lines, busses, transformers and losses.
I also added a section to explain the different scenarios we analysed for the NewWind plant.
Finally, I ended the report explaining the conclusions we have drawn from the project.
Overall, I believe I played a supportive role in the group, being focused and maintaining a
collaborative attitude.
4. Effectiveness of the Design Exercise for Learning
This Design Exercise was very effective for my learning. Working collaboratively allowed me to
learn from Tommaso and Gandhamani, who often brought up perspectives I hadn’t considered.
Through the exercise, I gained practical experience in researching and optimization of electrical
systems, which has strengthened my understanding of the topic. Additionally, managing the
group project gave me insights into project planning and teamwork, which I believe are very
important and useful skills I can apply in future projects.
