1. What is the need to have a local government in cities and towns?
• Cities and towns are huge and crowded and have their own problems and
needs
which are different from those of rural areas.
2. Differentiate between municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar
panchayats.
• Municipal corporation: It governs cities with a population of 10 lakhs or more.
• Municipal council: It governs smaller cities and towns that have a population of
more than 20,000 but less than 10 lakhs.
• Nagar panchayat: It governs areas which are in the process of changing from
rural
to urban.
3. Why is there compulsory representation of women in the local bodies?
Answer
1. The representation of women in the local bodies is essential to empower them
socially, politically and economically.
2. It is important for women to participate in the administration and governance
at the grassroot level because they are more familiar with the problems and
needs of the places where they live.
3. They also directly face issues like lack of sanitation and healthcare facilities
and poor drinking water supply and lack of primary education.
4. They are therefore more likely to work towards speedy and lasting solutions
to
these problems.
4. Mention any two compulsory functions of municipal corporations.
Ans.
Supply of drinking water
Maintenance of public hospitals
5. Who are the important officials of the municipal corporations?
Ans.
• The mayor: is the presiding officer of the corporation
• Deputy mayor
• Commissioner: is the chief executive officer of the municipal corporation, who
implements the decisions taken by the councilors.
6. Write on any one of the obligatory functions of the municipality.
Ans.
• Ensuring a proper supply of electricity
• Ensuring proper street lighting and replacing the light bulbs that have stopped
working is also their function.
7. What are the advantages of local self-government?
Ans. Local self-government
• Ensures the best management of local resources.
• Ensures the best management of local affairs. Takes the benefits of democracy
down to the grass roots.
• If the local bodies function efficiently, the areas they look after develop faster.
• The people of the area co-operate better as they know them personally.
• Also, administering an area locally is less expensive than managing the area
from a
distant capital.
• Is a good training ground for people who could go on to become future political
and
administrative leaders of the country.
