George Bernard Dantzig

He was an American mathematical scientist who made important contributions to operations research, computer science, economics, and statistics. A.B. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Maryland in 1936 M.A. in Mathematics at the University of Michigan in 1937. From 1937 to 1939 he worked in Washington as a Junior Statistician at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from 1937 to 1939. In 1939 entered his doctoral studies at Berkeley. In 1941 Dantzig put his graduate studies on hold and went to Washington where he joined the Air Force as a civilian.

From 1941 to 1946 he was Head of the Combat Analysis Branch, U.S.A.F. Headquarters Statistical Control. In 1946 he received the doctorate in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley In 1947 he joined SCOOP Project. By the end of the summer of 1947 he had developed the simplex method for solving Linear Programming problems. In 1952 Dantzig entered RAND (Research and Development). By 1960 he became a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at UC Berkeley In 1966 he joined the Stanford faculty as Professor of Operations Research and of Computer Science. The Mathematical Programming Society honored Dantzig by creating the George B. Dantzig Prize, bestowed every three years since 1982 on one or two people who have made a significant impact in the field of mathematical programming. Dantzig died on May 13, 2005, in his home in Stanford, California, of complications from diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He was 90 years old.

FATHER OF O.R.??????
PHILIP M. MORSE

Early in 1942 he organized the Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Research Group (ASWORG), later ORG, for the U.S. Navy, after the US had entered World War II. Morse co-authored Methods of Operations Research, the first OR textbook in the U.S He launched MITs Operations Research Center in 1956, directing it until 1968, and awarding the first Ph.D. in OR in the U.S. (to John Little). Morse gave the opening address at the 1957 organizing meeting of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS). In 1959 he chaired the first NATO advisory panel on OR.

GEORGE DANTZING

Through his research in mathematical theory, computation, economic analysis, and applications to industrial problems, [Dantzig] has contributed more than any other researcher to the remarkable development of linear programming. Linear programming arose as a mathematical model developed during World War II to plan expenditures and returns in order to reduce costs to the army and increase losses to the enemy. In 1963, Dantzigs Linear Programming and Extensions was published by Princeton University Press. Rich in insight and coverage of significant topics, the book quickly became the bible of linear programming.

APPLICATIONS of LPP, TODAY

Price products manage supply chains Transportation firms- airlines and shipping companies The petroleum industry- exploration, blending, production scheduling and distribution. (How much of its raw product should become different grades of gasoline and how much should be used for petroleum-based byproducts) The iron and steel industry - evaluate iron ores, explore the addition of coke ovens and select products. Paper mills- reduce trim loss. Governments - evaluate policy alternatives. Other applications - selecting advertising media and compensation policies; assigning personnel to jobs; rotating crops; developing bidding strategies, etc.
