Objective:
The purpose of this experiment is to acquaint the students with the fundamentals of electrical
circuit simulation. Through this experiment they will learn how to construct and simulate circuits
using Capture CIS and Pspice A/D programs of Orcad 9.2 software.

Part – A

Determining equivalent resistance of a circuit:

Figure 1
The following figure shows the circuit of Fig. 1 drawn using Capture CIS:

Figure 2

Results:

We have to calculate the equivalent resistance between A and B.

Theoretical Calculations:

From Fig. 1, we can calculate the theoretical value of equivalent resistance.

Req = {(220+270)-1 +330-1}-1 +1000+470 =1667.195122Ω

Simulation:

By simulating the circuit,we find the current going through the voltage source is 2.999mA. The
voltage difference between Node A to B is 5Vdc.
Therefore, according to Ohm’s law, the equivalent resistance is ,
5
Req = = 1667.222407Ω
2.999×10−3
Discussion:

Since, both the theoretical and simulation values match with each other. So it can be said that,
the simulation was successfully conducted.

The following figure shows the circuit of Fig. 1 drawn using Capture CIS:

Figure 4
Using Capture CIS and PSpice A/D; for the circuit shown in Fig.3
(i) Measuring the equivalent resistance between A & B :

By simulating the circuit,we find the current going through the voltage source is 8.494mA. The voltage
difference between Node A to B is 5Vdc.

Therefore, according to Ohm’s law, the equivalent resistance is ,

5
Req= = 588.6508123Ω
8.494×10−3

(ii) Measuring current through each branch:

Current through R1, IR1 =2.999mA
Current through R2, IR2 =1.207mA
Current through R3, IR3 =5.495
Current through R4, IR4 =1.792mA
Current through R5, IR5 =1.207mA
Current through R6, IR6 =2.999mA
Current through 5Vdc source = 8.494mA

(iii)The maximum current flows from B to A which is 8.494mA

Objective:
The purpose of this experiment is to introduce Ohm's law to the students and verify Ohm's law
using Capture CIS and PSpice A/D programs of Orcad 9.2 software.

Ohm's Law: At any constant temperature the current through any conductor is directly
proportional to the voltage across it.
If the voltage is represented by V and current by I then according to Ohm's law:
V∝I
Or, V = IR
Where, R is a constant and it is the resistance of the conductor.

Circuit Diagram:

The following figure shows the circuit of Fig. 5 drawn using Capture CIS:

Result:

Theoretical Calculation :

From Fig. 6, we can calculate the theoretical value of equivalent resistance.

Req= (270-1 + 330-1 + 470-1)-1+1000=1112.845594Ω.

Simulation:

After DC Sweep analysis the following graph will be generated which verifies the linear

relationship among voltage and current in a purely resistive circuit.

Figure 8

From Fig. 8, the equivalent resistance is

∆𝑉
Req =
∆𝐼

1.3821
=
1.242×10−3

=1112.80193Ω

Discussion:

In Figure 8, we find a straight line in the I versus V graph, which indicates the linear

relationship among voltage and current in a purely resistive circuit, and verifies the Ohm’s Law
as well.

Besides, both the theoretical and simulation values match with each other. So it can be said that,
the simulation was successfully conducted.
Assignments:

Solve the following problems using Capture CIS and PSpice A/D.

i) Find Rab. Verify the Ohm’s law for 5 Ω resistance for a variable DC supply of 1V – 15V at
terminal a-b.

Figure 9

Solution:

The following figure shows the circuit of Fig. 9 drawn using Capture CIS:

Figure 10
After DC Sweep analysis, the following graph will be generated which verifies the linear

relationship among voltage and current in a purely resistive circuit.

Figure 11

From Fig. 11, the equivalent resistance Rab is,

∆V
Rab =
∆I
3.6883
=
329.314×10−3

= 11.2Ω.
