Abstract PMI (Product Manufacturing Information)

The new buzzword
What does it actually stand for? Where is the gain?

Why Change?
And if so

HOW?
A quick glance at PMI From the organization perspective & The trenches

What is PMI?

Product Manufacturing Information

Information required to put across design intent to production

PMI Consists:

Dimensions (tolerances for each dimension)

Geometric tolerances of features (datums, feature control frames)

Manufacturing information (surface finish, welding notation)

Inspection information (key location points)

Assembly instructions Product information (materials, suppliers, part numbers, bill of materials, revision history)

Integrated PMI Vision (UGS)

Benefits of 3D PMI

Enhances and shortens the design cycle Fewer errors Streamline design/manufacturing processes Faster change management Accelerates decision making Remove drawings from the supplier communication chain
What are we waiting for? Lets DO IT!!!

Now What?

Faster Product development Reduced Cost Better success rate Reduce Engineering Change cycle time

It Sounds so familiar Is it really worth it?

Devise new process $ Training costs - $ Educate everyone??? Downtime during the above $$$

Justifying new Technology

Technology can bring benefit

if, and only if

it diminishes a limitation. Long before the availability of technology, we developed modes of behavior
(policies, measurements and rules)

to help us accommodate our limitations.

After being Dazzled (and dismayed)

STARTING THE QUEST TO 3D PMI

BRAINSTORMING
10

Existing limitations

Product documentation process requires a significant investment.

Data redundancy (in drawings)

Data inconsistencies (drawing - 3d models) Interpretation errors (of drawings) Time consuming change process (2D<->3D)

The key for Success

Engineering is the backbone of the organization If they will not like it Nothing Will be worthy

Direct gain to the designer

IS THE KEY

13

Phase 1

LEARN THE GOOD BOOK ASME Y14.5M ASME Y14.41

14

ASME Y14.41-2003
Digital Product Definition Data Practices

ASME Y14.41 is an extension of existing ASME standards Two possible modes:

3.3.1 Model Only 3.3.2 Model and Drawing

Some requirements are applicable to models ONLY Caution!! Down stream PMI to drawings with care!!!
15

ASME Y14.41
3.3.1 Model Only: The following paragraphs describe requirements when complete product definition is contained in the model. (a) Product definition data, including but not limited to notes, parts lists, marking requirements, dimensions, and tolerances shall be contained or referenced in the data set.

16

3.3.1 continued
b) The data elements of a drawing format as defined in ASME Y14.1 or ASME Y14.1M are not required, except for the following, which shall be contained in the data set: (1) name and address of the company or design activity corresponding to the Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code for the data set (2) data set title (3) data set number (4) approval indicators and approval dates (5) contract number when required (6) originators name and date (7) CAGE Code when required for identification of the design activity whose data set number is used

17

3.4.2 Management Data on a Model

(a) ASME Y14.41M Note (b) CAD Maintained Notation (c) Design Activity Identification (d) Duplicate Original Notation

(e) Item Identification

(f) Metric Notation (g) Navigation Data

18

3.5.1 Location of security marking

the security data annotation plane does not rotate with the model.

Phase 2

SELF PACED 3D PMI TRAINING

I-DEAS12 / NX5 3D PMI

Both packages ~comply with ASME standards

Had fun playing with new toys Liked I-DEAS Model Views Better (did not know about tolerance feature editor in NX)

It was not a trip through the park

Online documentation is not sufficient Training is not to be over looked!!!

Bonus designer benefit of 3D PMI

GD&T is about Interchangeability Working on Parts directly in the assembly allows:

The designer to concentrate on Function Form & Fit Datum definition & order reflects design intent

A single source of truth The whole truth and Nothing but the Truth
29

In House Road Blocks

Training Culture impose downstream GDT without regard to assembly, Function, Form & Fit Infrastructure (data management) communication?

How do we communicate 3D models offsite? How can I make sure the offsite supplier is on the correct revision?

30

Software tools

3D PMI templates (not out of the box) Notes area annotation plane not supported - Yet
ASME Y14.41 6.2.1 Notes Area Annotation Plane. When general notes, flagnotes, and special notations are placed in a model, they shall be placed on a single annotation plane that does not rotate with the model.

This annotation plane shall be available for display with the annotated model.

PMI is not fully associative (pattern recognition)

Phase 4

WRAPPING UP

33

Production

Zero engineering rework

(sure, we were careful about everything)

Interpretation:

3D models were easier to understand GDT savvy was not resolved by 3D models CNC loved 3D PMI Back Paper was requested CNC programming Tolerances were loosened (thanks to Tolerancing in assembly context)
34

Ease of use:

Timeline

Designers

Syntax checker helped eliminating common errors Braking of old habits was not easy Once we did:

Decreased documentation effort We had Fewer errors Streamline design / manufacturing processes Faster change management

35

Designer Benefits

Memory strains

Non geometric related data documentation in 3D environment (Threads, welding champers) made life easier Syntax checker

GDT in assembly context

Major decrease in Tolerancing effort maintain focus on design intent

They liked 3D PMI

Thats me jumping with joy
36

Why Change?
Consolidating PMI data to 3D environment does:

Accelerates & improve decision making Reduce drawing errors Faster change management Streamline design/manufacturing processes

3D PMI Can Enhance and shorten product cycle

37

How

ASAP introduction of constraints (get item req.) Document non geometric data as you go
(threads)

Due to software limitations

(PMI is not fully associative - yet)

Stabilize design Start Tolerancing

Hybrid has overhead on the designer & data management

But has benefits down the road
