Soil Essay

The three main functions of soil are food and biomass production, storage and transformation, and providing raw materials. The first function is food production, as soil provides nutrients, water and support for plant growth to feed animals. The second is storage and transformation, as soil stores carbon to regulate climate change and organisms break down organic matter. The third function is providing raw materials like sand, gravel, stone, ore and coal. Soil is vital for living creatures but forms slowly, so it needs protection.

  • Introduction to Soil: Explains the composition and significance of soil, including its role as a vital environmental resource.
  • Conclusion: Reiterates the essential role of soil and emphasizes the need for its protection to sustain life.
  • Functions of Soil: Details the three main functions of soil relating to biomass production, storage, and transformation.

Soil is a natural body consisting of inorganic and organic matter such as minerals, water and gases.

Also soil is the top layer of the earth in which plants grow, a dark brown or black mixture usually of mineral and organic constituents, clay and rock particles. Soil is need to be well protected.Because soil is a vital part of the natural environment. It is just as important as plants, animals, rocks, landforms, lochs and rivers and it soil is one of the most important thing for our lives. There are three main functions of soil : Food and other biomass production , storage, and transformation, providing raw materials. The first function of soil is food and other biomass production. From the smallest seedling to the largest forest, all land-based vegetation depends on soil to provide them with nutrients, water and root support. In turn, this vegetation has the vital function for animal life.Soil is important for farming or food production. Nearly 75% of our land is used for food production. In the future we will need high quality agricultural land. The productivity of soil depends on the climate. It is defined for used area. The most productive soils are usually used for farming and less productive soils used for grassland and forests. The second function of soil is storage and transformation The ability of soil to store carbon is important in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, therefore it is regulating climate change. Soil organisms continually breakdown complex organic molecules into simpler organic molecules and when the process is complete they are released as nutrients and gases, including greenhouse gases such as CO2.On the other hand it provides transformation. aerobic and anaerobic transformation in soil. The transformations occur thanks to the aerobic and anaerobic bacterias. The third function of soil is providing raw materials. Soils provide a direct source of minerals and other resources. The most significant raw materials are sand, gravel, stone, ore, coal and peat. Sand, gravel, stone are the raw materials of building, ore is the raw material of industry, coal and peat are the raw materials of heating.Soils can cover or be built up on many of these raw materials; for that reason, to get access to them the covering soil has to be removed. In conclusion, soil is the vital thing for animals, vegetations and all living creatures.Soil is formed slowly, however it can be easily demolished. For that reasons we must protected it well.
