I B.Tech.(CCC) Supplimentary Examinations, June 2009 SURVEYING (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) Explain the analytical methods of balancing a closed traverse. (b) Two points A and D are connected by a traverse survey ABCD and the following records are obtained AB = 219.0 m; BC = 170.5 m; CD = 245.75 m; Angle ABC = 1180 15 . Assuming that AB is meridian, determine: i. The latitude and departure of D relative to A. ii. The length of AD. iii. The angle of BAD.

2. The following reciprocal observations were made from two points: P and Q: Horizontal distance between P and Q = 4860 m Angle of elevation of Q at P = 10 5 21 Angle of depression of P at Q = 10 0 50 Height of instrument at P = 1.35 m Height of signal at P = 6.10 m Height of instrument at Q = 1.38 m Height of signal at Q = 6.21 m Find the dierence in level between P and Q and the co-ecient of refraction. Take R sin 1 = 30.88 m. [20] 3. (a) A tacheometer tted with stadia wires 4 mm apart has its object glass (f = 200 mm) xed at a distance of 250 mm form the trunnion axis. From the rst principles establish the tacheometeric distance equation if the sta intercept is S. (b) Describe the conditions under which tacheometric surveying is advantageous. [12+8] 4. (a) What are the dierent linear methods for setting out simple circular curves. Explain one method. (b) Set out a circular curve by successive bisection method, given that the length of long chord is 100 m and the radius is 250 m. [10+10] 5. A railway siding is to be curved through a right angle. In order to avoid buildings, the curve is to be compound, the radius of the two branches being 8 chains and 12 chains. The distance from the intersection point of the end straights to the tangent point at which the arc of 8 chains radius leaves straight is to be 10.08 1 of 2

chains. Obtain the second tangent length, or distance from the intersection point to the other end of the curve, and the length of the whole curve. [20] 6. (a) Explain the Criteria for selection of Triangulation stations. (b) Explain how intervisibility of triangulation stations is determined for dierent cases. [10+10] 7. (a) Explain the principle of Electronic measuring devices. Also discuss the classication of EDM instruments. (b) Describe the principle and working of Laser Level. 8. (a) Describe Relief Displacement on a vertical photograph. (b) The points A and B which appear in a vertical photograph taken from a camera having focal length of 220 mm and from an altitude of 2800 m, have their elevations as 400 m and 600 m respectively. Their corrected photo coordinates are as under. Determine the length of ground line AB. [10+10] Points Photo o-ordinates x(mm) y(mm) a +23.8 +16.4 b -13.6 -29.7 [10+10]
