Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

1. Define the terms: communication, communication process, methods or


channels of communication with 100% accuracy after class discussion.

2. Explain at least three (3) communication elements during the class


activity.

3. Practice active listening and verbal/non-verbal communication skills.


Communication

It is the process of exchanging-information, ideas,


thoughts, feelings and emotions through speech,
signals, writing or behavior.
Communication Process
The communication process refers to the steps and elements involved in
successfully transmitting and understanding a message between a
sender and a receiver. It includes the exchange of information, ideas,
opinions, or emotions through various channels or mediums. The
communication process is cyclical, meaning it involves continuous
feedback and adjustment.

Effective communication requires clarity, relevance, active


listening, and consideration of the needs and perspectives of both
the sender and the receiver. By understanding and utilizing the
communication process, individuals and organizations can
enhance their ability to convey messages, build relationships,
and achieve their communication goals.

Class Activity
1. Explain all the elements identify above.

2. Senario 1
Alisha sends a text message to her friend James:
"Hey, I saw what happened earlier. Are you okay?"
James misinterprets the message and thinks Alisha is gossiping about him.
Questions:
•What element of communication caused the misunderstanding?
•How could Alisha rephrase the message to ensure clarity?
•What role does tone play in text communication?

To be completed and submitted via the google classroom.

Communication Methods/ Channels
The way in which we communicate depends on
1. Who we are communicating with
2. The purpose of the communication.
Different communication methods are suited to
different situations and can be decided base on
the appropriateness for conveying the message
and communicating most effectively.

Clear channels of communication can add value to the workplace in
the following ways:
✓ Deliver communication in an instant or timely manner.
✓Ensure each member of the team receives the same information.
✓Increase productivity because employees know what is expected of
them.
✓Encourage group discussion and feedback.
✓Provide greater team interactions.

Communication Barriers
Scenario #1
Mrs. Valentina Gonzales went to see the doctor about her soar throat.
Her doctor decided that she had a tumor in her throat after conducting
various tests and inspecting her throat. While her doctor is writing her
medication and operation on the prescription paper and explaining
the consequences of surgery. Mrs. Gonzales cannot comprehend what
her doctor is saying due to the language used by her doctor. As a
result, she took the wrong medicine and the wrong procedure.
Scenario #2
Ms. De Castro's group decided to perform their group project at a nearby

amusement park. When they arrive at the park, they are greeted by yelling and

screaming while riding a ride. Despite the sounds, De Castro insisted on working

there because she wanted to ride the rides once they finished their task. As a

result, they eventually return home, having wasted their time by failing to

accomplish their task.


Scenario #3
Mrs. Alcantara opted to eat lunch at a restaurant close to her office. When she

walked to the cashier, the girl couldn't comprehend what she was saying due to

her hearing impairment. She was so hungry that she couldn't care less about the

girl's condition and scolded her. “You should not be working here if you have

hearing problems.” Because of her embarrassment, the girl sobbed and exited the

scene.
Effective Communication Strategies
To overcome this barrier the sender should:

➢Have sufficient knowledge about the subject which


communicating about.

➢Learn about the audience to avoid misunderstanding or


offending.

➢Ask for the receiver’s opinion and invite feedback.

➢Choose the right time to deliver the message.
➢Choose the channel that is appropriate for the message.
➢Choose the appropriate channel for the audience.

The message should:
➢Be well organized and free of errors.
➢Contain only relevant information.
➢Be long enough to adequately communicate the idea,
without being long so that it bores or confuses the receiver.

The channel should:
➢Choose the channel that is appropriate for the message.

➢Choose the appropriate channel for the audience.

➢Use more than one communication channel medium, where


possible, especially for important messages.
Effective Communication Strategies
The receiver should:

➢Listen actively and attentively without criticizing the sender.

➢Avoid interrupting the speaker.

➢Give feedback, and ask for clarification if necessary.
