Chemical reactions Notes
➢ CHEMICAL CHANGE: A change which alters the specific properties
of a material by bringing about a change in its molecular composition,
followed by change of state, is called chemical change.
➢ Direct Combination: when two or more elements or compounds react
chemically to form only one new compound, then the chemical reaction is
called direct combination.
Exam: A + B → AB
C + O2 → CO2
➢ Decomposition Reactions: When a chemical compound decomposes on
heating or absorbing some other kind of energy, so as to form two or
more new substances [ elements or compounds], then the chemical
reaction is called chemical decomposition.
AB→A + B
2CaCO3 → 2CaO + 2CO2
➢ Thermal dissociation: It is a decomposition reaction-in which a
substance dissociates-into two or more simpler substances on application
of heat.
NH4Cl ↔ NH3 + HCl
➢ Electrolytic decomposition: A decomposition reaction which is brought
about by passage of electric current.
2H2O→ 2H2 + O2
➢ Photochemical decomposition: a decomposition reaction which occurs
in the presence of light.
AgCl→ 2Ag + Cl2
➢ Chemical displacement: When more reactive metal displaces less
reactive metal form its aqueous salt solution, the chemical reaction is
called chemical displacement.
AB + C → CB + A
CuSO4 + Fe → FeSO4 + Cu
➢ Double decomposition: A chemical reaction, in which two compounds in
their aqueous solution react by exchanging their radical, is called double
decomposition.
A+ B- + C+ D- → A+ D- + C+ B-
NaCl + AgNO3 → AgCl + NaNO3
➢ Precipitation reaction: A chemical double decomposition reaction in
which one of the products is insoluble in water is called precipitation
reaction.
FeSO4 +2NaOH →Na2SO4 + Fe (OH)2↓
➢ Neutralisation: A chemical double decomposition reaction between an
acid and a base, such that one of the products is a soluble salt and the
other is water is called neutralization.
NaOH + HCl→ NaCl + H2O
➢ Exothermic reaction: a chemical reaction which proceeds with the
evolution of heat energy is called exothermic reaction.
N2 + 3H2 ↔ 2NH3
➢ Endothermic reaction: A chemical reaction which proceeds with the
absorption of heat energy is called endothermic reaction.
N2 + O2 →2NO
➢ Photochemical reaction: A chemical reaction which proceeds with the
absorption of light energy is called photochemical reaction.
➢ H2 + Cl2 → [sunlight] 2HCl
➢ Electrochemical reaction: A chemical reaction which proceeds with
absorption of electrical energy is called an electrochemical reaction.
2H2O→ 2H2 + O2
