Lesson Plan and Notes: Shapes Around

Us (Class 4 Maths)
Lesson Plan
Chapter: Shapes Around Us
Grade: 4
Duration: 4 periods (40 minutes each)
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and name 2D and 3D shapes.
- Understand the properties of shapes: faces, edges, and corners.
- Observe and draw angles (right, acute, obtuse).
- Understand the concepts of symmetry, net of solids, and solid construction.
- Apply geometric understanding to real-life examples (e.g., buildings, toys).

Period-wise Breakdown

Period 1: Introduction to 3D Shapes and Observation

- Warm-Up: Show models of India Gate, Qutub Minar using blocks or toys.
- Activity: Ask students to build monuments with blocks (pg 1–2).
- Concepts Introduced:
- Cubes, Cuboids, Cylinders, Pyramids, Cones, Spheres
- Discuss similarities/differences between real and model structures
- Discussion Questions:
1. What shapes do you see in the building?
2. What happens if you remove a block from the model?

Period 2: Exploring Prisms and Pyramids

- Activity: Make models using nets or paper craft (pg 3)
- Concepts Introduced:
- Nets of cubes/pyramids
- Vertices (corners), Faces, Edges
- Euler's Formula: F + V - E = 2
- Hands-on: Use straws and clay to make 3D shapes.

Period 3: Identifying and Drawing Angles

- Activity: Use yoga poses or classroom objects to find angles.
- Concepts Introduced:
- Angles: Right, Acute, Obtuse
- Use right-angle checkers
- Practice: Dot grid drawings, classifying letters and shapes by angles

Period 4: Circles and Special Shapes

- Activities:
- Use thread/compass to make circles
- Find center, radius, diameter (pg 17–18)
- Matchstick puzzles and shape classification (pg 21–23)
- Concepts:
- Polygon classification by sides and angles
- Circle properties
- Symmetry and shapes within shapes

Chapter Notes

1. 3D Shapes and Structures

Examples: Cube, Cuboid, Cone, Sphere, Cylinder, Pyramid
Features:
- Faces: Flat or curved surfaces
- Edges: Line where two faces meet
- Vertices (Corners): Where edges meet

2. Building with Shapes

India Gate, Qutub Minar made with combinations of cubes, cuboids, cylinders

3. Nets and Prisms

Net: 2D layout that folds into 3D
Prism: Same shape on opposite faces (e.g., cube, cuboid)
Pyramid: One base, faces are triangles meeting at a point

4. Faces, Corners & Edges Table

Shape Faces (F) Edges (E) Corners (V)

Cube 6 12 8

Cuboid 6 12 8

Triangular Prism 5 9 6

Square Pyramid 5 8 5
5. Understanding Angles
- Right Angle (90°): Like corners of a book
- Acute Angle: Smaller than 90°
- Obtuse Angle: Bigger than 90°
- Use paper, dot grids, classroom objects to observe angles

6. Circles and Curved Shapes

- Center: Middle point of circle
- Radius: Line from center to edge
- Diameter: Line passing through center, twice the radius

7. Fun With Shapes

Matchstick puzzles, Divide shapes into parts, Web tracing and paths, Classifying based on
number of angles and sides
