Speech-in school assembly- by Syed Mohammed Mehdi Akber of Year 11 Boys(chairman of wildlife and environment club) on 4th November

2010,coinciding with the 25th of Zilqaad, Earth Day

He it is who made the Earth smooth for you: therefore go about in the spacious sides thereof and eat of His sustenance and to Him is the return after death. Holy Quran; Sura Mulk, Verse: 15 Salamun Alaykum and good morning to you all Today, being the 4th of November, plus the 25th of Zilqaad, Dahwul Ardh a.k.a Earth Day-for those who dont know-is the day-denoted via its meaning, when Allah (swt)-the Almighty, spread the Earth and made it possible, nay, PLAUSIBLE, for it to become mankind habitat. According to some narrations, it also is the day when Prophet Ibrahim (as) (i.e. Abraham) and Prophet Isa (as) (i.e. Jesus) were born, plus todays fast is equivalent to 70-other days fasts. Question: Why am I telling you all this? Before I answer this question, lets examine, in general, how we benefit from the Earth: -It serves as the source of the air we breathe, the food we eat, the homes we live in, the clothes we wear, the solid and stable ground we walk on, the balanced gravitational force that allows us to live in tranquility and peace. It provides our body matter, nutrients, etc. We were created from it, we eat from it and to it shall we return. This list-as you all know-may go on and on and may never stop, but coming back to the main purpose of my speech, lets face the bitter truth: We have failed-as inhabitants of the Earth to at least show some gratitude for this divine blessing that God has provide for us to live in. We just dont deserve to even call ourselves, let alone humans, even animals! As God says in His Holy Book They are like cattle, nay worse than cattle they have eyes, but cant see; ears, but cant hear; hearts, but cant understand Seriously, if man would have mended his ways, we wouldnt be facing the infamous dilemma that we are facing in this Dane age; namely, global warming, increased air pollution, drastic devastating changes in climate, depletion of forests, extinction of some and endangering of many animal species and once again, the list appears to be endless The worlds best scientists from IPCC, have predicted that the world temperatures may rise from 2.5C to 10.4C by 2100and who is to blame?! Rhetorical question Anyways, because today is the day of Dahwul Ardh, lets see what we can do to make some improvements or changes to create a ray of hope of a potentially better future; Lets-first and foremost-change our attitude towards our environment. We must understand that we actually depend on our environment and it may not be a symbiotic relationship! Lets be mindful of our natural surroundingAlso, trying to be peaceful may prevent potential increase in prototype Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Plus, lets not waste food cozcmon man-jus coz ure getin ur daily bread doesnt there r no people

starving out there. Lastly, by protecting our natural resources and planting more treesThis list-too-may be inexhaustible. It is under this context, that-as faculty members-may be knowing, the Wildlife club has proposed to put up at least one pot of plant per class, plus a weekly inspection so as to create a sense of responsibility. It is with these remarks that I end. Thx a lot for bearing with me. I hope ure not tired
