schemas which apply. Select those green Maladaptive Schema cards from the deck. Note the banner colours of
those cards.
2. Use the banner colours to find the gold Needs cards which correspond to the relevant schema domain. Next,
study the Unmet Needs side; this will help you to understand the origin of the maladaptive schemas.
3. Find the purple Adaptive Schema card referenced on each green card that was selected. The Adaptive Schema is
the remedy for the Maladaptive Schema. The reverse side of the Adaptive Schema card will teach you an
important skill to help you strengthen the Adaptive Schema. The Met Needs side of the Needs cards will help you
to understand how to strengthen the adaptive schema. This is needed to remedy the maladaptive schema.
4. Schema Mode cards (Blue Modes cards in the optional expansion pack) can deepen your understanding of the
modes which manifest from schemas and the Pink skills cards will help you to strengthen your Healthy Adult

How to use these cards

These cards as to be used in conjunction with a Schema Mode Therapist.
The first critical step in Schema Mode Therapy is to develop an awareness of the modes that you manifest. To do this:
1. Study the blue Child Modes (1-2), Dysfunctional Parent Modes (13-14) and Healthy Modes (15-17) as these will
all apply to you.
2. Read the Maladaptive Coping Modes (3-12) and as you do, consider “Does this mode apply to me?” Those modes
that resonate need to be studied. So study them to increase your awareness of which of these modes you manifest
in times of stress.
3. Then refer to the pink Healthy Adult Skills cards to strengthen your Healthy Adult response and the orange
Schema Therapy Technique cards to prompt you to revise the skills taught to you by your schema therapist.
